Ella, por lo tanto, deberia ser firme y fuerte, es decir algo consolidado que nuestros hijos pudieran heredar y perfeccionar. Por otro lado, como nuestros paises la tuvieron poco o nada, la teoria de la democracia era, y en gran medida sigue siendo, una teoria que refleja la historia y las condiciones sociales de los paises donde ha logrado mas solidas raices, basicamente los paises de capitalismo avanzado del cuadrante Noroeste del mundo. Por eso, muchas de las luchas antiautoriatarias, en el sur y en el Este, fueron alimentadas por la ilusion de que, una vez que dasaparecieran los grandes despotas, se lograria democracias que no tardarian en parecerse a las del Noroeste. Esta inocente creencia fue de suma utilidad para dinamizar aquellas luchas, pero fue de mas tarde tambien origen del desencanto que se apodero de muchos cuando, despues de la caida de esos autoritarismos, una serie de melancolicas realidades se hizo evidente: crisis economicas y su tratamiento tecnocratico y socialmente insensible; el debilitamiento de actores que fueron historicamente los grandes soportes sociales de los avances democraticos; el paralelo debilitamiento, si no la destruccion, de buena parte del aparato estatal al ritmo de aquellas crisis y de la ofensiva neoconservadora; la acentuacion de grandes desigualdades y, junto con ellas, de relaciones sociales con marcado acento autoritario, y por cierto, el amargo descubrimiento de que buena parte de loslideres politicos que la democracia trajo consigo seguia teniendo, como antes, grave dificultad en distinguir el bien publico de sus intereses privados.
