Book excerpt: Upon inadvertently discovering telepathic time travel, the rogue leader of a secret society of scientists threatens to re-write American history and virtually flip the world upside down with one cataclysmic stroke! When Professor Tony Shane discovers that his research has been stolen to further this monstrous terrorist threat, he and his young research associate, Andrea Martin, join a CIA mission to intervene. Intervention requires Shane to link telepathically with his young father, Daniel, in the summer of 1939. With the world on the brink of global war, Shane must guide Daniel through a bold attempt to rescue--or to kill--a brilliant Jewish atomic physicist in Hitler's grasp. While Shane and Daniel fall under the spell of an aggressive 1939 lover with mysterious designs, an alienated old flame must find a way to save the mission. Much of this suspenseful venture evolves during a nostalgic overnight transatlantic flight on a Pan American "flying boat," with darkly mysterious forces working at cross-purposes. Fateful events during the 1939 flight are paralleled by political brokering in modern times...climaxing with a shocking, fateful confrontation between a stubborn American president and the charismatic leader of the secret society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: McDonnell's F-101 Voodoo series was in many ways the most interesting of the 'Century Series' fighter programmes of the 1950s, partly because the type's design and intended mission changed radically during a 40-year career. Originally designed as a fighter-bomber, it was converted to be a reconnaissance aircraft, serving alongside the U-2 and RF-8 Crusaders during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War. Although it gained a reputation as a difficult aircraft to handle, the jet's supersonic speed and newly-developed camera suite enabled it to conduct vital low-altitude photo-reconnaissance missions over heavily-defended target areas. In combat, the RF 101 was usually 'first in-last out' for strike missions. This made it a ready target, with a solo aircraft flying straight and level to gather target photo evidence at low-altitude offering enemy gunners plenty of opportunity to shoot the Voodoo down. This study tells the combat stories of this extraordinary aircraft, highlighting the difficulty of the missions on which it was sent and the courage of its pilots.

Book excerpt: A horrible terrorist strike…referred to as Operation Deadly Rainby the al-Qa’eda …is about to be launched against the United States during the holiday season, with perhaps hundreds of thousands of lives at stake. An artificial intelligence program is nearly completed that might predict in advance when, where, and how this attack might occur. When the CIA receives fragmentary warnings of the upcoming attack, the university researchers secretly developing this program…called “StarSight”…are abruptly plucked from their comfortable academic posts and thrust into the frontline of the war on terrorism. The stage is set for savage conflict: Professor Tony Shane, his beautiful research associate, Sarah, and a handful of university co-workers are condemned by their academic colleagues for conducting a secret project for the CIA. At the same time, they are exposed to deadly attempts by terrorist agents to sabotage their work. Unknown to the CIA and Senator Moorhouse, who is coordinating the StarSight project, the person responsible for Deadly Rain…and ruthlessly attempting to terminate StarSight … is himself a wealthy and respected American citizen and close friend of the Senator and his wife. With political intrigue permeating university and government circles alike, this adventure takes the reader from the comfort of the “halls of ivy” to the exotic settings of San Francisco, Zurich, Washington, and the Italian Riviera. Despite the personal trials of the researchers, politicians, and terrorists that unfold during this pre-holiday period, the purposeful efforts of the StarSight team to prevent the terrorist attack build to a heart-stopping climax.

Book excerpt: The world's first jet engines were already available shortly before the end of the Second World War, but they had not been developed to a high enough standard to take part. This changed after 1945 when, on both sides of the Iron Curtain, one technological development surpassed the others and records tumbled almost every week. The era of the piston engine was finally over and jet fighters now dominated the skies. By the mid-1950s their speed had already reached double that of the speed of sound; an achievement which a few years earlier, would have sounded to many like science fiction.

Book excerpt: 'Offers hope and good sense in equal measure' Ian Bremmer 'A sensible plan for reform that can help us create a fairer and more equitable world' Sheryl Sandberg Problems are mounting. We face sputtering growth, an escalating climate emergency, worsening inequality, poor policy responses, increasing nationalism and a decline in global co-operation. But a permacrisis need not be permanent. In this book, three of the most internationally respected and experienced thinkers of our time, Gordon Brown, Mohamed A. El-Erian and Michael Spence, writing with Reid Lidow, explain where we’ve gone wrong and set out what could be done to bring about a brighter future for generations to come. They look beyond today’s headlines and political rhetoric to offer a bold, big-picture vision and nuanced, achievable solutions for fixing our broken approaches to growth, economic management, and governance. The world is changing. What that change looks like is up to us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A condensed ‘Band of Brothers’ with profiles of Richard Winters and Easy company as well as the German and American Generals . . . 5 stars” (Army Rumour Service). 101st Airborne Division was activated in August 1942 in Louisiana, and its first combat mission was Operation Overlord. On D-Day—June 6, 1944—101st and 82nd Airborne dropped onto the Cotentin Peninsula hours before the landings, tasked with capturing bridges and positions, taking out German strongpoints and batteries, and securing the exits from Utah and Omaha Beaches. Things did not initially go smoothly for 101st Airborne, with cloud and antiaircraft fire disrupting the drops. Casualties were high in some areas due to heavy pre-registered German fire. Nevertheless, the paratroopers fought on, and they did manage to secure the crucial beach exits, even if they only achieved a tenuous hold on some other positions. A few days later, 101st Airborne was tasked with attacking the German-held city of Carentan as part of the consolidation of the US beachheads and establishment of a defensive line against the anticipated German counteroffensive. The 101st forced its way into Carentan on June 10 and 11. The Germans withdrew the following day, and a counteroffensive was put down by elements of the 2nd Armored Division. This fully illustrated book details the planning of the airborne element of D-Day and the execution of the plans until the troops were withdrawn to prepare for the next big airborne operation, Market Garden. “Always good to read a detailed account of one division’s contribution to Operation Overlord. The detail is exceptional and fascinating.” —Books Monthly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the post-1945 era, the aircraft carrier has remained a valued weapon despite the development of nuclear weapons, cruise and ballistic missiles, and highly capable submarines. At times, as in the early days of the Korean and Vietnam Wars and in the Falklands conflict, carriers alone could deploy high-performance aircraft to the battlefield. In other operations, such as enforcing the no-fly zones and the U.S. invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, only carriers could provide the bases needed for sustained combat and support operations. This second volume of Norman Polmar's landmark study details the role of carriers in the unification of the U.S. armed forces and strategic deterrence, fiscally constrained Great Britain, the development of British Commonwealth and ex-colonial navies, and the efforts of France and the Netherlands to rebuild their fleets. The role of the modern carrier-nine nations currently possess them-is discussed, as are the issues confronting nations that might acquire them. Chapters on the Soviet Union's effort to produce carriers are included for the first time. The development of both carrier planes and the many "oddball" aircraft that have flown from carriers-such as the U-2 spy plane-are also examined. Appendixes include comprehensive data on all carriers built and converted through 2006. This volume is a valuable companion to the critically acclaimed Volume I, which covers aircraft carrier development and operations from 1909 to 1945.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the twentieth century, civil and military aviation has played a prominent role in the history and development of New Mexico. Commercial operators have exploited the advantages offered by aircraft to overcome the unique challenges of geography and climate. By virtue of New Mexico’s comparative isolation which suited the secrecy of innumerable military projects, a wide variety of military aircraft have been based there through the years. The list of military aircraft types that made up the tapestry of New Mexico aviation is as extensive as the list of legendary figures who have contributed to its amazing history. While most of the military aircraft types no longer grace the airspace over New Mexico, many can be viewed in their former splendor as they stand as gate guards or museum exhibits. This booklet provides a comprehensive guide to where these restored aircraft can be found. Complementing the details concerning aircraft specifications and roles, the author has included many facts. Finally, the descriptions of the recovery, restoration and preservation efforts stand as a tribute to the many volunteers who have devoted time, energy and financial support to ensure this rich heritage is preserved. This handbook is designed to provide aviation enthusiasts with a simple checklist on where to find retired military aircraft that are preserved in New Mexico.
