Established by Kemal Ataturk, the CHP is seen to be the founding party of modern Turkey. Kemalism sought to create a secular and democratic society based on the principles of republicanism, populism, secularism, nationalism and revolutionism. Although this leftist ideology became an integral part of Turkish politics by the early 1960s, it has remained a comparatively weak representative movement. Its strong ideological stance advocates an authoritarian and exclusionary position, particularly in relation to matters such as multiculturalism and democratisation, fuelling many debates concerning the role of religion and nationalism within Turkey and perpetuating elements of xenophobia and intolerance. In this paper Princeton University's Michael A. Reynolds offers a detailed examination of the evolution of Ankara's foreign policy and regional outlook. By analyzing the factors that challenged the country's secular Kemalist tradition, particularly Turkey's inability to resolve its 'Kurdish question, ' and detailing the influential views of its foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoğlu, Reynolds offers much-needed insight into Turkey's new position. Rather than the result of short-term tactical thinking or a passing trend, Reynolds argues, Turkey's shift is the product of a deeply felt, religiously informed worldview that identifies secularism as threatening to Turkey's wellbeing. Book excerpt: "The ongoing crisis in Turkey must be seen against the background of a bifurcated society, a weak political system, a low-level insurgency in Eastern Anatolia and a military-dominated power elite steeped in a state ideology known as Kemalism. Kemalists perceive political Islam, Kurdish nationalism and European liberalism as their main challengers. Therefore, and for other reasons explained in this Occasional Paper, a confrontation between the Justice and Development Party (AKP), a party that has its roots in political Islam, and the military was to be expected at some point in time. Already in 2003 and 2004 the military actively considered ways of ousting the AKP from power. But the military could only muster public support once 'Euro-fatigue' increased in Turkey and when the fears of the secular middle class regarding a perceived AKP Islamist 'hidden agenda' became strong enough to drive them out into the streets to protest. As will be shown in this paper, the 'creeping Islamisation' of Turkish society is indeed a cause for concern, but the AKP seems to play only a minor role in this, if indeed it plays a role at all. On the other hand, the military's embrace of the secular aspects of Kemalism seems a little odd if one takes its role in supporting Islam after the coup d'état of 1980 into account. However, the current standoff has less to do with political Islam per se than with the powerful role of the military and its insistence that it will not accept a candidate with Islamist roots and a pro-EU reform agenda as President and Commander-in-Chief of the Turkish Republic" -- p. 3.

In order to place the current manifestations of this Turkish official modernising ideology in the two-part context of globalisation and the re-sacralisation of the world, Contemporary Kemalism scrutinises the texts of five prominent Kemalist intellectuals. After defining the unquestioned ideological premises of Kemalism, such as its implied liberal philosophy of history, and its idea about human nature, the book describes Kemalism’s vision of the ideal society. Kemalism’s close relationship to social democracy and neo-nationalism is then discussed in detail. Also included is an analysis of contemporary Kemalism’s relation to earlier Kemalist articulations. The study demonstrates that various previous assumptions, both Western and Turkish, concerning Kemalism’s nature and content are too simplistic, and thus unable to account for the endurance of this ideology and its continuing relevancy in present-day Turkey. Inviting the reader to contemplate contemporary Kemalism’s ambiguous relationship with the Western world, this book will be of value to scholars and researchers with an interest in Middle Eastern Politics, Modernization Theory and Political Ideology.
