Book Synopsis U. S. Military at Sea by : Dominic E. Côté
Download or read book U. S. Military at Sea written by Dominic E. Côté and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an overview on "crew rotation" which is the practice of using more than one crew to operate a single ship. This practice has attracted growing attention in the Navy in recent years. Under conventional crewing concepts, one crew is assigned to each naval vessel and operates it on all deployments and training cruises. Individual personnel join or leave the crew as part of their normal career rotations. The purpose of crew rotation is to increase the amount of time that a ship spends operating overseas, providing "forward presence" as compared with conventional single crewing. This book describes the different approaches to crew rotation that the Navy uses today, has experimented with, or plans to employ. It also analyses the forward presence and force-structure implications of using or not using crew rotation on the Navy's surface combat ships. This book consists of public documents which have been located, gathered, combined, reformatted, and enhanced with a subject index, selectively edited and bound to provide easy access.

Book Synopsis Salvaging American Defense by : Anthony H. Cordesman
Download or read book Salvaging American Defense written by Anthony H. Cordesman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-04-30 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From grassroots terrorism to the nuclear ambitions of hostile nations, the United States faces increasingly complex threats to its national security. Combating these threats continues to demand a reshaping of the nation's security structure, military forces and defense expenditures. In this study, Anthony Cordesman offers a detailed analysis of critical challenges affecting U.S. national security and how failures in adapting to these challenges have exacerbated the strains on available resources. He systematically identifies the most glaring obstacles to successful national security planning and proposes constructive and practical ways to proceed in the future. Cordesman focuses on ten specific challenges, and each is addressed within the context of the Iraq War, Afghan War, War on Terrorism, and the risk of conflict over the Taiwan Straits. Out of the lessons drawn from these experiences, he examines the future of international coalitions, asymmetric warfare, nation building, and stability operations, and concludes that perhaps the most pressing area for change is the need for accountability among civilian and military policymakers.
Book Synopsis Budgeting for Hard Power by : Michael E. O'Hanlon
Download or read book Budgeting for Hard Power written by Michael E. O'Hanlon and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2009-10-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are extraordinary times in U.S. national security policy. America remains engaged in both Iraq and Afghanistan while facing a global economic downturn. Homeland security concerns still abound in the wake of the September 11 attacks. Even as the financial crisis places considerable pressure on the U.S. budget, President Obama will have to spend a great deal of time and money on national security, hard power, and war. How should these competing demands be prioritized? How much money will be needed? How much will be available, and how should it be spent? Budgeting for Hard Power continues the long and proud tradition of Brookings analysis on defense spending. As with previous volumes, this book examines the budgets of the Pentagon and the Department of Energy's nuclear weapons programs. But Michael O'Hanlon takes his analysis further, addressing the wide range of activities crucial for American security as a result of 9/11 and the ongoing wars. He considers homeland security resources and selected parts of the State Department and foreign operations budgets—offering a more complete overall look at the elements that make up America's "hard power" budget, a concept that he and Kurt Campbell wrote about in Hard Power: The New Politics of National Security (2006). With future federal deficits projected to top $1 trillion, O'Hanlon calls for Defense, State, and Homeland Security budgets to be as frugal as possible. At the same time, he recognizes that resources should be selectively increased in certain areas to compensate for years of systematic underfunding, especially in certain areas of homeland security, diplomacy, and foreign assistance. In his typically clear and concise manner, O'Hanlon shows policymakers how to wrestle with the resource allocation decisions affecting the national security of the United States.
Book Synopsis The Impact of Chinese Naval Modernization on the Future of the United States Navy by : Ronald O'Rourke
Download or read book The Impact of Chinese Naval Modernization on the Future of the United States Navy written by Ronald O'Rourke and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's rapidly developing military capabilities have forced US policy makers to reconsider their own military infrastructure. The primary concern of this book is to examine how China's military modernisation will be factored into decisions about US Navy programs. Several elements of China's military modernisation have potential implications for future required US Navy capabilities. These include theatre-range ballistic missiles (TBMs), land-attack cruise missiles (LACMs), anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCMs), surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), land-based aircraft, submarines, surface combatants, amphibious ships, naval mines, nuclear weapons, and possibly high-power microwave (HPM) devices. This book will examine how these elements and others will influence the future of the United States Navy.
