Book excerpt: Although much information on high-temperature tensile and stress-rupture properties for various columbium-base materials is readily available, only limited information concerning the more useful creep behavior of columbium alloys has been reported. These data are widely scattered throughout the literature, and little attempt has been made to rationalize the creep behavior of columbium alloys. The purpose of this memorandum is to compile and review existing creep data for columbium alloys to gain insight into their merits and limitations for time-dependent structural service. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncoated Ta-17W and C129Y alloys and coated Ta-10W, C103, and C129Y alloys have been evaluated for short-time creep behavior at 2600 to 3200°F. The time for creep strains of up to 2 percent has been measured and the results have been used to derive empirical equations that predict short-time creep life in this temperature range. The equations give estimates of the time-to-creep strains of up to 2 percent at stress levels that will produce the maximum strain in 60 min or less. Silicide-base coatings appear to add to the creep strength of coated Ta-10W but have little added effect on the strength of the columbium-base alloys. The creep behavior of coated metals can be analyzed by the same empirical methods as those used for uncoated substrates. The results show that commercially available silicide coatings protect the substrate from oxidation with creep strains of up to 2 percent on exposures of 1 to 11⁄2 h in this temperature range.

Book excerpt: In work to develop materials for elevated temperature applications, binary niobium alloys containing either 2.37 wt% chromium, 3.34 wt% zirconium, or 5.21 wt% vanadium were fabricated to sheet by forging at 550 deg C and rolling at room temperature. All three alloys were completely recrystallized after 90% cold work (reduction in thickness) and a one hour anneal at 1150 deg C. Tensile tests on the annealed materials at 650, 800, 1000, 1150, and 1315 deg C indicated that chromium, zirconium, and vanadium are potent strengtheners of niobium. At 1000 deg C the 2.37 wt% chromium and the 5.21 wt% vanadium alloys had 0.2% offset yield strengths of 38,000 and 38,300 psi respectively. At 1315 deg C, the 3.34 wt% zirconium alloy had a 0.2% offset yield strength of 14,700 psi. Stresses to produce creep rates of 0.0001, 0.01, and 0.1% per hour were determined for all three alloys at 650, 800, and 1000 deg C. The vanadium alloy exhibited the greatest creep resistance, requiring stresses of 52,700, 40,000, and 15,500 psi to produce a creep rate of 0.001% per hour at 650, 800, and 1000 deg C respectively. This research indicated that significant improvement in the mechanical properties of niobium can be achieved by alloying without undue sacrifice of fabricability. (auth).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creep tests of 1000 hours duration and greater were conducted in the temperature range 20000 to 22000 F on a commercially available columbium alloy (FS-85) in vacuum units designed and built to achieve ultimate pressures of 10%% torr. At a stress level of 10 000 pounds per square inch, FS-85 exhibited moderate creep resistance at 2000 F, 1-percent strain being achieved in 775 hours. At 21000 and 22000 F and the same stress level, the alloy was much weaker, 1-percent strain being achieved in 355 and 50 hours, respectively. The Manson-Haferd linear time-temperature parameter proved moderately successful in predicting the long-time creep lives from relatively short-time creep data, the maximum error between predicted and experimental lives being a factor of 1. 7 and the average error being a factor of 1. 3. The agreement is considered good in view of the large scatter generally observed in long-time high-temperature creep tests. In all cases, however, the observed experimental life was shorter than the predicted life. The nonconservative nature of these predictions may be due in part to the fact that the predictions were based on data obtained at a pressure level of approximately to 10 -6 torr, but the long-time tests to which the predictions are compared were made at a lower pressure level, 10 -8 to 10 -9 torr. Creep tests conducted in the conventional-vacuum units (10 -6 torr) and the ultrahigh- vacuum units under the same conditions of temperature and stress yielded creep curves that are virtually identical for the first few hundred hours but that deviate with increasing test time. The conventional-vacuum tests then showed a reduced creep rate compared with that of the ultrahigh-vacuum tests.

Book excerpt: In Phase 1 an investigation was made of factors affecting the tensile ductility minimum behavior of coated columbium alloys in air in the intermediate temperature range 700-1100 C. In the case of TRW Cr-Ti-Si coated Cb-10W and Cb-10W-2.5Zr(Cb-752 Alloy), contamination and embrittlement by air at the base of coating cracks is the major factor responsible for loss of ductility. Apparent mechanical interaction between coating and substrate palys a smaller role, but becomes more important with decreasing substrate thickness. The presence of zirconium and dynamic strengthening of the substrate have relatively little effect on ductility. A study of dynamic strengthening during creep of Cb-10W-2.5Zr and Cb-10W was the objective of Phase 2. All creep testing was done in a vacuum of 10 to the minus 6th power torr and under constant stress conditions. The temperature range of interest was 800-1200 C. In long-time creep tests, the usual dynamic strengthening process in the Cb-10W-2.5Zr alloy was complicated by additional hardening due to internal oxidation. The Cb-10W-2.5Zr alloy was considerably stronger in creep than Cb-10W. The possible strengthening effects of Zr are discussed. (Author).
