Book Synopsis East Asia Pacific at Work by : World Bank
Download or read book East Asia Pacific at Work written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2014-05-07 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unprecedented progress of East Asia Pacific is a triumph of working people. Countries that were low-income a generation ago successfully integrated into the global value chain, exploiting their labor-cost advantage. In 1990, the region held about a third of the world’s labor force. Leveraging this comparative advantage, the share of global GDP of emerging economies in East Asia Pacific grew from 7 percent in 1992 to 17 percent in 2011. Yet, the region now finds itself at a critical juncture. Work and its contribution to growth and well-being can no longer be taken for granted. The challenges range from high youth inactivity and rising inequality to binding skills shortages. A key underlying issue is economic informality, which constrains innovation and productivity, limits the tax base, and increases household vulnerability to shocks. Informality is both a consequence of stringent labor regulations and limited enforcement capacity. In several countries, de jure employment regulations are more stringent than in many parts of Europe. Even labor regulations set at reasonable levels but poorly implemented can aggravate the market failures they were designed to overcome. This report argues that the appropriate policy responses are to ensure macroeconomic stability, and in particular, a regulatory framework that encourages small- and medium-sized enterprises where most people in the region work. Mainly agrarian countries should focus on raising agricultural productivity. In urbanizing countries, good urban planning becomes critical. Pacific island countries will need to provide youth with human capital needed to succeed abroad as migrant workers. And, across the region, it is critical to ‘formalize’ more work, to increase the coverage of essential social protection, and to sustain productivity. To this end, policies should encourage mobility of labor and human capital, and not favor some forms of employment - for instance, full-time wage employment in manufacturing - over others, either implicitly or explicitly. Policies to increase growth and well-being from employment should instead reflect and support the dynamism and diversity of work forms across the region.

Book Synopsis Hardship and Vulnerability in the Pacific Island Countries by : Melissa Adelman and Oleksiy Ivaschenko
Download or read book Hardship and Vulnerability in the Pacific Island Countries written by Melissa Adelman and Oleksiy Ivaschenko and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this report is to present solid empirical evidence of hardship, vulnerability to shocks, and risk management in the Pacific region. The report is primarily a stocktaking exercise that brings together existing evidence and new analysis of available data using a consistent framework. The report takes a “micro-” perspective—that of the individual and household—but accounts for the important role of communities, the state, and international partners. As such, it is a complement to the studies that analyze the macroeconomic context of the Pacific or that analyze rich subnational data. The purpose of building this solid evidentiary base is to catalyze needed future work, including new data collection, rather than to provide the final answer to any of the important questions addressed in the report.

Download or read book Job Matching for Youth in Asia and the Pacific written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2023-11-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report analyzes ways to match youth in Asia and the Pacific with quality jobs and shows why approaches that consider non-linear transitions into and within the labor market can help underpin productivity and social progress. Noting some four out of five young people in the region work informally, it reviews job matching models including commercial and government online platforms, digital bootcamps, and corporate-funded programs. It explains how governments can play an instrumental role, assesses how the private sector reaches untapped markets, and why blended job matching strategies can improve transitions and drive inclusive youth employment.

Download or read book Forced Displacement and NGOs in Asia and the Pacific written by Gül İnanç and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-01-26 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a comprehensive survey of the dynamics of conflict and climate induced forced displacement and organisational response across Asia and the Pacific. The Asia Pacific region hosts some of the largest numbers of displaced people on the planet, with some of the fewest protections available and sparse frameworks for advancing rights, livelihood, and policy. The region maintains the lowest number of signatory states to international refugee protection covenants, and the majority of national protection and support systems are ad hoc, precarious, and unpredictable. Civil society has very often filled in the gaps but, with the rise of nationalist rhetoric, civil society space has been shrinking. Drawing upon the expertise of academics, practitioners, historians, theorists, policy makers, political scientists, economists, and the voices of affected communities across the region, this book examines both key case studies and larger regional trends. This book is a valuable resource for scholars and practitioners looking to understand the complexities of responses to refugees and forced migrants in the Asia Pacific Region.

Download or read book World Development Report 2019 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work is constantly reshaped by technological progress. New ways of production are adopted, markets expand, and societies evolve. But some changes provoke more attention than others, in part due to the vast uncertainty involved in making predictions about the future. The 2019 World Development Report will study how the nature of work is changing as a result of advances in technology today. Technological progress disrupts existing systems. A new social contract is needed to smooth the transition and guard against rising inequality. Significant investments in human capital throughout a person’s lifecycle are vital to this effort. If workers are to stay competitive against machines they need to train or retool existing skills. A social protection system that includes a minimum basic level of protection for workers and citizens can complement new forms of employment. Improved private sector policies to encourage startup activity and competition can help countries compete in the digital age. Governments also need to ensure that firms pay their fair share of taxes, in part to fund this new social contract. The 2019 World Development Report presents an analysis of these issues based upon the available evidence.
