Book excerpt: This review was established to provide recommendations to the Prime Minister to ensure Indigenous training and employment services are properly targeted and administered to connect unemployed Indigenous people with real and sustainable jobs. In particular, the review was to consider creating sustainable employment outcomes and programme effectiveness and costs. This report presents the findings and recommendations of the review, which took an 'end-to-end' approach to addressing disadvantage and promoting parity - including prenatal services and empowering communities, as well as building employer demand, employment and relocation incentives, and breaking the welfare cycle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the world, we see a 'participatory turn' in the pursuit of gender equality, exemplified by the adoption of gender quotas in national legislatures to promote women's role as decision-makers. We also see a 'pluralism turn', with increasing legal recognition given to the customary law or religious law of minority groups and indigenous peoples. To date, the former trend has primarily benefitted majority women, and the latter has primarily benefitted minority men. Neither has effectively ensured the participation of minority women. In response, multicultural feminists have proposed institutional innovations to strengthen the voice of minority women, both at the state level and in decisions about the interpretation and evolution of cultural and religious practices. This volume explores the connection between gender parity and multicultural feminism, both at the level of theory and in practice. The authors explore a range of cases from Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa, in relation to state law, customary law, religious law, and indigenous law. While many obstacles remain, and many women continue to suffer from the paradox of multicultural vulnerability, these innovations in theory and practice offer new prospects for reconciling gender equality and pluralism.

Book excerpt: In a time long ago and yet very familiar, an enigmatic young warrior named Syncritus was caught between two worlds. The son of an oracle from an animist tribe, he is taken as a child to a famed eastern city ruled by a "Sage King." After becoming a knight in the fellowship of The Green Sword, he returns to his mother's village to find his destiny in defending the five tribes of the "Fertile Valley" from a mega-technic empire. Yet another country to the north is divided between three religious groups who are constantly at war and are now on the brink of catastrophe. When Syncritus discovers an engineering project that would threaten the ecology and stability of the whole region, colorful and intriguing characters from all of the nations involved find their lives becoming intertwined in a synchronous experience, culminating in an epic "battle of ideas" that is a parable of human history. Syncritus is a 2012 Finalist in the Eric Hoffer Award's "New Horizon" short list of distinguished first time authors!

This book was released on 2006 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: France is notorious for the underrepresentation of women in its halls of politics. Having been unsuccessful at implementing quotas for female candidates--unlike several of their European neighbors--France passed a gender parity law in 2000 that required all political parties to field an equal number of male and female candidates. Yet in the 2002 elections the main political parties fell well short of nominating equal numbers of male and female candidates. How did parity replace gender quotas as the preferred way to achieve greater representation for women in elected office? Why have these gender-based measures been embraced by some parties and not others? And, why do parties sometimes fail to implement quotas and parity? Gender Quotas, Parity Reform, and Political Parties in France considers this transition from quotas to parity, providing a history of French women's rights and the French electoral process, as well as an examination of the roles of the Socialist and Gaullist political parties. Compelling and clearly written, Opello has created a work that bridges an existing gap in literature about contemporary France and will appeal to scholars of gender, politics, and France.

Book excerpt: Gender equality is a moral and a business imperative. But unconscious bias holds us back and de-biasing minds has proven to be difficult and expensive. Behavioral design offers a new solution. Iris Bohnet shows that by de-biasing organizations instead of individuals, we can make smart changes that have big impacts—often at low cost and high speed.

Book excerpt: This book provides a classical physics-based explanation of quantum physics, including a full description of photon creation and annihilation, and successful working models of both photons and electrons. Classical field theory, known to fully describe macroscopic scale events, is shown to fully describe atomic scale events, including photon emission and annihilation. As such the book provides a ‘top-down’ unification of electromagnetic and quantum theories.

Book excerpt: People tend to rank values of all kinds linearly from good to bad, but there is little reason to think that this is reasonable or correct. This book argues, to the contrary, that values are often partially ordered and hence frequently incomparable. Proceeding logically from a small set of axioms, John Nolt examines the great variety of partially ordered value structures, exposing fallacies that arise from overlooking them. He reveals various ways in which incomparability is obscured: using linear indices to summarize partially ordered data, relying on an inadequately defined concept of parity, or conflating incomparability with vagueness. Incomparability can enrich and clarify a range of topics including the paradoxes of Derek Parfit, rational decision theory, and the infinite values of theology. Finally, Nolt shows how to generalize many of the concepts introduced earlier, explores the intricate depths of certain noteworthy partially ordered value structures, and argues for the finitude of value. Incomparable Values will be of interest to scholars and advanced students working in ethics, value theory, rational decision theory, and logic.
