Book excerpt: Gender equality and empowerment of women is one of the effective ways to combat poverty, hunger and disease, and to stimulate development that is sustainable. The government of Kenya has made efforts to promote women's active involvement in all areas of societal development, in addition to ensuring that development is based on the contributions and concerns of both men and women. Despite these efforts, there are still clear gender inequalities in areas where both men and women's roles are visible, for example in health, education, agriculture and in some remunerated work. The aim of this paper is to assess the social and economic costs of gender discrimination; these costs are incurred in suboptimal resource allocation, in lost agricultural productivity and in deficient nutrition of household members ... This study argues that: with the same access and control of productive resources by both male and female headed households in a given geographical area, the levels of agricultural productivity and nutrition outcomes in male headed households should not be significantly different from those of female headed households. Any difference would be attributed to differences in access to resource caused by gender discrimination. The study analyses the food and nutrition situation in female and male headed households in relation to access to human capital, financial capital and land. The results show that human and financial capitals are the main resources that caused variations in both agricultural productivity and nutritional status in the two categories of households. Despite male headed households having access to more land than the female headed households, there was no significant difference in average area of land cultivated in the two categories of households. Economic cost analysis of unequal access to resources by gender is done using an econometric model.

This study draws on data from two communities in Murang'a District, Kenya, to consider a) the patterns of cooperation, reciprocity, and exchange which these associations facilitate; b) the impact of this strategy on the access of women and other members of their households to productive resources; and c) the effect of this strategy on intra-household decision-making and resource use. Evidence suggests that women's associations provide access to critical resources in shirt supply -- labor and capital -- and to public goods. The nature of this access varies according to both the resource base of the community and the socioeconomic position of the household. Women's associations are particularly useful to women in the lowest income groups and to women who are single heads of household, by providing new opportunities for them to earn, save, and invest, and offering them some control over cash income.

Even school curriculum can be reviewed further to address the gender bias issue adequately in order for the Kenyan society to tap the abilities of both genders for prosperity. It is necessary to give both genders equal opportunity to access elective governance positions. Gender imbalance is usually skewed against women yet they are known for some good leadership qualities like pacifying, coalition building, initiating development projects, increased participation through delegation,etc. Review of related other works was crucial right from the formulation of the topic, statement of the problem formulation, data collection and analysis. The research design to employ was descriptive statistics. The target population was the 47,624 registered voters of Kilgoris sub-county. The sample size was 200 respondents arrived at by purposive and random sampling since population is vast. The methodology to be employed in this study will be questionnaire interview. Reliability and validity of research instruments were tested before actual research. Questionnaires were administered to all respondents in the study; an interview schedule was also used to solicit more responses. Theoretical models suitable for this research are the rational choice model and the sociological model which provided a framework for analyzing the factors for the voters preference in the context of a general election in Kenya (presidential, gubernatorial, parliamentary, senatorial and county assembly positions).Data analysis was done by use of software package for social sciences and presented using percentages and pie charts, accompanied by explanations.
