Download or read book Hematology written by William Samson Beck and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth edition of this well-known series of lectures by distinguished Harvard hematologists is substantially revised to include discussions of the many important scientific developments in contemporary hematology. New insights into oncogenes, growth factors, membrane receptors, differentiation and morphogenesis, enzymology, molecular biology, and evolutionary biology appear in virtually every lecture. A lecture on general principles of malignant disease appears for the first time in recognition of the fact that in many hospitals and medical schools hematology departments now encompass oncology - an important topic that is not covered elsewhere in the medical curriculum. This new edition also adds many tables and figures relating to differential diagnosis that will be useful to practicing physicians and house officers. Examples include causes of splenomegaly, indications for splenectomy, differential diagnosis of normocytic anemia, macrocytic anemia, hypochromic anemia, thrombocytopenia, bone marrow failure syndromes, and many others. The bibliographies have been expanded, a new appendix containing laboratory methods has been added, and there is an unusually complete index.
Book Synopsis The New Dimensions of Warfarin Prophylaxis by : Stanford Wessler
Download or read book The New Dimensions of Warfarin Prophylaxis written by Stanford Wessler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Symposium on The New Dimensions of Warfarin Prophylaxis held on October 16-18, 1986 in New York City was conceived as a forum to bring together physicians and other scientists knowledgeable about the pharmacological effects of warfarin on the hemostatic mechanism and the clinical usefulness of this compound in the prevention of thromboembolic phenomena. The coumarin compounds have commanded a striking breadth of interest among members of the biomedical research community for almost one-half century. Aspects of its effects on the vitamin K-dependent proteins, on the laboratory recognition of the drug's pharmacologic action and its use as a therapeutic agent in a variety of disease states have been actively studied with increasing intensity in the past several decades. Thus, the present state of these studies seemed to be a timely subject for discussion, not only to gather together in one place representative samples of the myriad of data on warfarin, but also to underscore the ever increasing necessity for communication between basic research and clinical practice. The content and organization of this monograph reflect the scope and importance of warfarin prophylaxis. One of the unique aspects of this publication is that it spells out in one place the warfarin story from molecular biology through clinical trials to future directions of research and patient care.

Book Synopsis Platelet Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa Inhibitors in Cardiovascular Disease by : A. Michael Lincoff
Download or read book Platelet Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa Inhibitors in Cardiovascular Disease written by A. Michael Lincoff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-03-04 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Platelet Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa Inhibitors in Cardiovascular Disease, the major investigators working in this rapidly advancing field join together under the aegis of A. Michael Lincoff and Eric J. Topol to provide the first comprehensive overview of the preclinical and clinical development of the glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor antagonists. These acknowledged experts elucidate the theoretical basis for the inhibition of platelet aggregation in the treatment of coronary syndromes, present and synthesize evidence for the efficacy of glycoprotein IIb/IIIa blockade in inhibiting ischemic complications of both coronary intervention and acute coronary syndromes, and provide guidelines for the use of this novel class of agents in the clinical management of cardiovascular disease. They also compare the pharmacology and clinical efficacy of the currently available glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor inhibitors and speculate about further potential applications of these agents in the treatment of vascular disease. Written by the scientists and physicians who discovered and characterized this important new class of receptors, invented the first IIb/IIIa agents, and conducted the definitive clinical trials, Platelet Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa Inhibitors in Cardiovascular Disease offers the most complete and authoritative review of these powerful new therapeutics available today.

Book Synopsis Vertebrate Red Blood Cells by : Mikko Nikinmaa
Download or read book Vertebrate Red Blood Cells written by Mikko Nikinmaa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the respiratory function of vertebrate red cells. I have defined the phrase "respiratory function" broadly to include, in addition to the actual oxygen and carbon dioxide transport, erythropoiesis, haemoglobin synthesis, red cell structure, the deformability of red cells in circulation, ion and substrate transport across the cell membrane, cellular metabolism, and control of cellular volume and pH. All of these aspects of the red cell function may affect gas transport between the respiratory epithelia and the tissues. Throughout the book, I have tried to relate our current knowledge about the nucleated red cell function to the wealth of information about the function of mammalian red cells. However, whenever possible, I have placed the emphasis on the nucleated red cell function for two reasons. First, the erythro cytes of 90% of vertebrate species are nucleated, and, second, nucleated red cell function has not been reviewed earlier in a single volume. This being the case, I have tried to make the reference list as complete as I could with regard to nucleated red cells. I hope that the approach adopted is useful for both com parative and human physiologists. Many people have contributed to the making of this book directly or in directly. Antti Soivio started me in this field. Prof. Henrik Wallgren has always encouraged fresh scientific ideas in his department. My present ideas of red cell function have been influenced by work carried out with Prof. Roy E.
Book Synopsis Vertebrate Blood Cells by : Arthur Frederic Rowley
Download or read book Vertebrate Blood Cells written by Arthur Frederic Rowley and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1988-02-25 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988, Vertebrate Blood Cells provided a comprehensive review of our knowledge of the structure and function of vertebrate blood cells. This was the first book to attempt to draw together such a guide, and this volume was essential reading for this subject. The book consists of six chapters on general evolutionary aspects, fish, amphibian, reptilian, avian and mammalian haematology written by experts in his/her field. Of particular importance is the standardized format used from chapter to chapter which allows the reader to compare the information available on a particular aspect from one group of animals to another. The book should be of interest to immunologists, haematologists and general biologists as well as undergraduate students of zoology, cell biology, microbiology and veterinary and human medicine.
Book Synopsis Cerebrovascular Surgery by : Jack M. Fein
Download or read book Cerebrovascular Surgery written by Jack M. Fein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considerable impetus was given to the study and understanding of cere brovascular anatomy by Thomas Willis and his contemporaries in the seventeenth century, yet almost two hundred years were to pass before further significant advances were made in this field. Then, from the mid nineteenth century onwards, the dark ages of cerebrovascular research gradually lifted through the efforts of such workers as Luschka, Heubner, and Windle, whose pioneering anatomical studies formed the basis of the present-day understanding of the morphology of the cerebral circulation. The turn of the century saw an increasing influence of the early neurolo gists in describing anatomy of cerebral vessels in relation to their areas of distribution and to the production of focal deficits through specific vascu lar lesions and anomalies. Later still, Padget and others made important observations concerning phylogenetic and developmental aspects of the cerebral circulation. These anatomical and clinical studies were remarkable enough but the real breakthrough in investigating cerebral pathophysiology and in devis ing appropriate corrective neurosurgical procedures had to await the re markable advances in technology of the past fifty years. These began with the advent of cerebral angiography with all its subsequent refinements and progress has been accelerated through establishing noninvasive Doppler and high resolution ultrasound imaging techniques, methods for the accu rate measurement of cerebral blood flow, CT scanning, PET scanning, and, most recently, imaging and metabolic NMR scanning.
