Book excerpt: Originally published in 1949, this book is a gripping collection of reminiscences on the death of the great Indian chief, Crazy Horse, by the military men who were present on that fateful day on September 5, 1877 at old Fort Robinson, Nebraska: Jesse M. Lee , V. T. McGillycuddy, H. R. Lemly, and George McAnulty. Crazy Horse was one of the “irreconcilables” of the Sioux, an Indian who refused to be “reconstructed” and follow the white man’s road. Like Sitting Bull he had little or no use for the white man, and especially those in authority at Washington. This is not surprising, considering the unjust treatment the Indian received, and the trickery and deceit practiced upon him. Although but a young man, even at the time of his treacherous murder, Crazy Horse had already won his spurs in the defeat of Col. J. J. Reynolds in the Powder River fight of March 17, 1876, and of his practical defeat of General George Crook’s forces in the Rosebud fight of June 17, 1876, to say nothing of the leading part he played in the annihilation of Custer’s immediate command of five troops of the Seventh Cavalry, June 25, 1876, at the battle of the Little Big Horn, in South-eastern Montana. After all these brilliant “coups” the reputation of Crazy Horse, as a fighting chief, inspiring leader and strategist, was secure among his own people.

Book excerpt: Crazy Horse, the military leader of the Oglala Sioux whose personal power and social nonconformity set him off as "strange," fought in many famous battles, including the one at the Little Bighorn. He held out boldly against the government's efforts to confine the Sioux on reservations. Finally, in the spring of 1877 he surrendered, one of the last important chiefs to do so, only to meet a violent death. Mari Sandoz, the noted author of Cheyenne Autumn and Old Jules, both available as Bison Books, has captured the spirit of Crazy Horse with a strength and nobility befitting his heroism.

Book excerpt: Legends cloud the life of Crazy Horse, a seminal figure in American history but an enigma even to his own people in his own day. This biography looks back across more than one hundred and twenty years at the life and death of this great Sioux warrior who became a reluctant leader at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. With his uncanny gift for understanding the human psyche, Larry McMurtry animates the character of this remarkable figure, whose betrayal by white representatives of the U.S. government was a tragic turning point in the history of the West. A mythic figure puzzled over by generations of historians, Crazy Horse emerges from McMurtry's sensitive portrait as the poignant hero of a long-since-vanished epoch.

William Kotzwinkle captures the sadness of the defeat of Crazy Horse and then takes readers to the site where, in 1948, Korczak Ziolkowski takes on the gargantuan task of sculpting Crazy Horse from a mountain. Kotzwinkle's prose vividly describes the creation of a monumental work of art as well as the mystical certainty that Crazy Horse will ride again.

I am an elder now. So, I have decided to write down on paper the truth my grandfather "Bend Clown Horse" told me. This way it would not be lost and the story will be told. My ancestors did not write journals or documentaries, this is past down from father to son from memory. The white-man history books and documentaries told many stories about Crazy Horse, and the Battle of Little Bighorn, but they were not accurate. There are truths that were covered up in order to make the white man look good - but I have the real story. The story from "Thick To North Wind" was never written or documented by any white-man." - LeRoy Tyon aka Thick Clown Horse Published by Empire Publishing and Literary Service Bureau

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best known for his role in the arrest and killing of Crazy Horse and for the book he wrote, The Indian Sign Language, Captain William Philo Clark (1845–1884) was one of the Old Army’s renaissance men, by turns administrator, fighter, diplomat, explorer, and ethnologist. As such, Clark found himself at center stage during some of the most momentous events of the post–Civil War West: from Brigadier General George Crook’s infamous “Starvation March” to the Battle of Slim Buttes and the Dull Knife Fight, then to the attack against the Bannocks at Index Peak and Sitting Bull’s final fight against the U.S. Army. Captain Clark’s life story, here chronicled in full for the first time, is at once an introduction to a remarkable figure in the annals of nineteenth-century U.S. history, and a window on the exploits of the U.S. Army on the contested western frontier. White Hat follows Clark from his upbringing in New York State to his life as a West Point cadet, through his varied army posts on the northern plains, and finally to his stint in Lieutenant General Philip Sheridan’s headquarters first in Chicago and later in Washington, D.C. Along the way, Mark J. Nelson sets the record straight on Clark’s controversial relationship with Crazy Horse during the Lakota leader’s time at Camp Robinson, Nebraska. His book also draws a detailed picture of Clark’s service at Fort Keogh, Montana Territory, including what is arguably his greatest success—the securing of Northern Cheyenne leader Little Wolf’s peaceful surrender. In telling Clark’s story, White Hat illuminates the history of the nineteenth-century American military and the Great Plains, including the Grand Duke Alexis’s buffalo hunt, the Great Sioux War, and the careers of Crook and Sheridan. Nelson's examination of Clark’s early years in the army offers a rare look at the experiences of a staff officer stationed on the frontier and expands our view of the army, as well as the United States’ westward march.

Book excerpt: The full story of what led Crazy Horse and Custer to that fateful day at the Little Bighorn, from bestselling historian Stephen E. Ambrose. On the sparkling morning of June 25, 1876, 611 U.S. Army soldiers rode toward the banks of the Little Bighorn in the Montana Territory, where 3,000 Indians stood waiting for battle. The lives of two great warriors would soon be forever linked throughout history: Crazy Horse, leader of the Oglala Sioux, and General George Armstrong Custer of the Seventh Cavalry. Both were men of aggression and supreme courage. Both had become leaders in their societies at very early ages; both had been stripped of power, and in disgrace had worked to earn back the respect of their people. And to both of them, the unspoiled grandeur of the Great Plains of North America was an irresistible challenge. Their parallel lives would pave the way, in a manner unknown to either, for an inevitable clash between two nations fighting for possession of the open prairie.
