Download or read book Shop Class as Soulcraft written by Matthew B. Crawford and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2009-05-28 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A philosopher/mechanic's wise (and sometimes funny) look at the challenges and pleasures of working with one's hands “This is a deep exploration of craftsmanship by someone with real, hands-on knowledge. The book is also quirky, surprising, and sometimes quite moving.” —Richard Sennett, author of The Craftsman Called “the sleeper hit of the publishing season” by The Boston Globe, Shop Class as Soulcraft became an instant bestseller, attracting readers with its radical (and timely) reappraisal of the merits of skilled manual labor. On both economic and psychological grounds, author Matthew B. Crawford questions the educational imperative of turning everyone into a “knowledge worker,” based on a misguided separation of thinking from doing. Using his own experience as an electrician and mechanic, Crawford presents a wonderfully articulated call for self-reliance and a moving reflection on how we can live concretely in an ever more abstract world.

Book Synopsis The Arthur Crawford Scandal by : Michael D. Metelits
Download or read book The Arthur Crawford Scandal written by Michael D. Metelits and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-10 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set against the political background of 19th century colonial India, The Arthur Crawford Scandal presents a critical analysis of bureaucratic and legal corruption in the country and suggests some long-term implications for the Indian justice system. The scandal was exposed when the eponymous revenue commissioner of the Central Division of Bombay Presidency, Arthur Travers Crawford, stood accused of corruption, but was subsequently absolved of all allegations of bribery. Through a descriptive analysis of this event, the volume also focusses on the collateral damage of the scandal—the Indian victims—as well as issues of racism, cultural differences and class conflict. Written in an engaging manner, the volume draws one into the narrative of the empire and reveals how public discussions in the newspapers, court rooms, and the British parliament played a role in shaping public notions of administrative morality. The book shows that even a century ago, discriminatory treatment by officials involved in corrupt acts weakened public confidence in and support for the ruling government.

Book Synopsis William H. Crawford by : Chase C. Mooney
Download or read book William H. Crawford written by Chase C. Mooney and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-11-21 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Senator from Georgia, minister to France, cabinet officer, and unsuccessful presidential candidate, William Harris Crawford was one of the major figures of the early republic. Because most of his papers were destroyed by fire during the Civil War period, however, estimates of Crawford's abilities and accomplishments have usually been based on the papers of his political adversaries—notably John Quincy Adams—and few men of his stature have received so little attention from historians. This first full biographical study, drawing on hundreds of documentary collections, many never used in biographies and monographs of the period, throws new light on Crawford's career and his relationships with his contemporaries.

Book Synopsis Dirty Deals? [3 volumes] by : Amy Handlin
Download or read book Dirty Deals? [3 volumes] written by Amy Handlin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-09-16 with total page 1242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An encyclopedia unlike any other, this work focuses on lobbying, corruption, and political influence in America to inspire readers to think critically about the U.S. government and to appreciate the opportunities of citizenship. Even before the founding of the Republic, James Madison expressed the concern that special interest influence could become "adverse to the rights of other citizens [as well as] the permanent and aggregate interests of the community." In modern times, examples of lobbying scandals and corruption associated with political campaign contributions abound—and yet our political system can and does further the larger goals of American democracy. Suited for advanced high school students, undergraduates, and general readers, this set examines the three powerful forces that affect every level of government but typically operate out of public view. This three-volume work exhaustively covers the evolution and impact of lobbying, political influence, and corruption from the Colonial era to today. Volume 1 contains detailed scholarly essays on various aspects of lobbying, corruption, and political influence. Volume 2 comprises informative A–Z entries on people, events, laws, organizations, and legal decisions. The entries demonstrate the linkages among the topics but give equal attention to each as an independent influence on U.S. government and politics. Developments since 1990 and the extensive proliferation of the Internet and social media receive additional emphasis. Volume 3 contains primary documents that include executive orders, court cases, state and federal lobbying forms, and codes of conduct related to lobbying, campaign finance reform, and anti-corruption measures.
