Book excerpt: Although isolated examples of crashworthiness can be found in aircraft which pre-date the designs of the Wright brothers, the first crashworthiness research project was undertaken in 1942 at Cornell University Medical College. The study investigated aircraft crashes to determine the causes of injuries and supported a development program for improving crashworthy design. The aviation industry quickly applied the results of the study, and by the early 1950s, crashworthy design features were incorporated into several airplanes. However, lack of consumer interest forced many of these designs to be dropped. In the 60s and 70s, most of the crashworthiness research pertained to military helicopter design. In the 80s, the lack of crashworthiness standards were seen as one reason for the increase in product liability litigation, bringing on a renewed interest in crashworthy design. In the 90s, aircraft crashworthiness is becoming an increasingly important issue with the push towards zero-tolerance of crashes. In a single source, Aircraft Crashworthiness brings together thirty technical papers which cover the past forty years of progress in this area.These papers were selected because of their significance in the development of crashworthiness technology. Book excerpt: The purpose of this small business innovative research (SBIR) program was to evaluate the feasibility of developing small composite airplanes with improved crashworthiness. A combination of analysis and half scale component tests were used to develop an energy absorbing airframe. Four full scale crash tests were conducted at the NASA Impact Dynamics Research Facility, two on a hard surface and two onto soft soil, replicating earlier NASA tests of production general aviation airplanes. Several seat designs and restraint systems including both an air bag and load limiting shoulder harnesses were tested. Tests showed that occupant loads were within survivable limits with the improved structural design and the proper combination of seats and restraint systems. There was no loss of cabin volume during the events. The analysis method developed provided design guidance but time did not allow extending the analysis to soft soil impact. This project demonstrated that survivability improvements are possible with modest weight penalties. The design methods can be readily applied by airplane designers using the examples in this report. However, improvements in the crashworthiness of automobiles during the past decade has been documented through a reduction of the fatality-to-injury ratios. Such improvement in general aviation aircraft crashworthiness has been sought by the National Transportation Safety Board, the Civil Aeronautics Board, and others for more than 35 years. This report reviews past accident investigations, regulatory developments, and crashworthiness research activities, and assesses the adequacy of current general aviation crashworthiness requirements. As a result of this review, recommendations for improved crashworthiness of general aviation aircraft are made.

It identifies five major subprogram areas for study and analysis to accomplish the program's goals: (1) Airframes; (2) Cabin safety; (3) Fuel system protection; (4) Emergency evacuation system; and (5) Standards, criteria, and procedures. The plan emphasizes use of available background data; development of analytical techniques; validation of analytical techniques; validation of data to determine feasibility/acceptability; and transmittal of appropriate data for consideration as the basis for regulation, standards, etc. The Federal Aviation Administration groups, other Government agencies/departments and industry organizations participating in this effort are identified. Program schedule with milestones is presented. Program management and funding requirements are also identified.
