Book excerpt: "This book examines travel to Mexico during the Porfiriato (the long dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz 1876-1911), focusing especially on the role of travelers in shaping ideas of Mexico as a logical place for Americans to extend their economic and cultural influence in the hemisphere. Overland travel between the United States and Mexico became instantly faster, smoother, and cheaper when workers connected the two countries' rail lines in 1884, creating intense curiosity in the United States about Mexico, its people, and its opportunities for business and pleasure. As a result, so many Americans began to travel south of the border during the Porfiriato that observers from both sides of the border began to quip that the visiting hordes of tourists and business speculators constituted a "foreign invasion," a phrase laced with irony given that it appeared at the height of public debate in the United States about the nation's imperial future. These travelers created a rich and varied record of their journeys, constructing Mexico as a nation at the cusp of modernity but requiring foreign intervention to reach its full potential"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not supposed to be a national or political history of Victoria. When I was asked to write something about the country which has extended its hospitality to me, and given me bread and cheese—sometimes no cheese, it is true, and more often than not no butter, but still always bread, and an ever-increasing appetite—I must confess I felt frankly scared. There is a very good, if somewhat vulgar, expression in use out here, which speaks of anyone who attempts what is beyond them as "biting off more than they can chew." And the thought frightened me. There seemed to be so many people who had lived all their life in the country, and were therefore much more capable of writing about it than I could ever possibly hope to be. However, I found that other "fools rushed in," who had been here for even a shorter period than myself; who had never participated in any way in the true life of the country, or depended on it for their own life, which after all teaches one more than anything else ever can about a place. I may not be an p. vi"angel," I thought, still I know it, which is one point in my favour; and, after all, eight years can scarcely be described as a "rush." Besides, every proverb and popular saying seems to be balanced by another which is completely contradictory—and while it may be true that "fools rush in where angels fear to tread," it is also true "that lookers-on see most of the game," and perhaps score somewhat in the freshness of their impressions and in their facilities for comparison. As it is I can only write about Victoria as I know it. There are many mistakes that I may have made through my inability to see all sides of a question; but they are at least honest mistakes, and not the deliberate misstatement of facts, from which Australia has so often suffered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Crane, the renowned Syro-Lebanese author and sociologist Halim Barakat creates a narrator who looks back wistfully on a childhood in a small village of Syria, with the image of flying cranes and in particular one wounded bird as a continuing symbol of his emotions toward the past and its impact upon his life. The narrator then travels to the United States, and, with his wife, goes through the experiences of American college life in the 1960s. He describes his participation in the political protests during that fraught decade, and goes on to depict his later life in the American capital of Washington DC and its surroundings. The link between narrator and author is clearly a close one, and yet the careful way in which the narrative's sequence is constructed allows the reader to invoke the world of the imagination in interpreting this nostalgic account of a Middle Eastern childhood and its international aftermath.

Book excerpt: "An oddly assorted lot of champions have labored--often at cross purposes--to save [the whooping crane] from extinction. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service turned the crane's wintering ground into a refuge, and joined forces with the National Audubon Society to find ways and means to save him. Zoo superintendent George Douglass was often accused of trying to corner the captive crane market. The cranes' best friend, Robert Allen, pursued the birds in helicopters, stalked them through salt marshes, tracked them to their secret nesting place in Canada, and tried to clear the flyway of snipers so the tiny flock could migrate without casualties in transit. Hopes for raising cranes in captivity were pinned on Josephine and her mate Crip. 52 eggs and 4 chicks later hopes were dashed when two of the chicks, George and Georgette, had to be renamed George I and George II. Behind this are other grim statistics. Though the wild whooping crane population at Aransas has increased from a low of 14 in 1939 to a high of 44 in 1965, the bird could be wiped out overnight, as swiftly and irrevocably as the passenger pigeon." --Dust jacket.

Included are Native American legends and Spanish and Hispanic literature. As he traces ideas about the desert, Teague shows how literature and art represent the Southwest as a place to be sustained rather than transformed. 14 illustrations.

Stephen Crane died at the age of 28 in Germany. In his short life, he produced stories that are among the most enduring in the history of American ficiton. The Red Badge of Courage manages to capture both the realistic grit and the grand hallucinations of soldiers at war. Maggie: A Girl on the Streets reflects the range of Crane's ability to invest the most tragic and ordinary lives with great insight. James Colvert writes in the introduction to this volume: "Here we find once again the major elements of Crane's art: the egotism of the hero, the indifference of nature, the irony of the narrator ... Crane is concerned with the moral responsibility of the individual ... (and) moral capability depends upon the ability to see through the illusions wrought by pride and conceit—the ability to see ourselves clearly and truly." Great Short Works of Stephen Crane Includes : The Red Badge of Courage; Maggie: A Girl of the Streets; The Monster. Stories: An Experiment in Misery; A Mystery of Heroism; An Episode of War; The Upturned Face; The Open Boat; The Pace of Youth; The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky; The Blue Hotel.
