Book excerpt: We report six new North American records, one new state record, and one rare record of pyraloid moths from southern Florida, together with diagnostic characters for all taxa. We transfer Ennomosia Amsel from Spilomelinae to Glaphyriinae, Cangetta micralis (Hampson) n. comb. from Deuterophysa Warren, and Microthyris lelex (Cramer) n. comb. from Cyclocena Möschler. We revise Pseudocabotia Blanchard and Knudson rev. stat. to a subgenus of Ancylosis Zeller, with its type species A. (P.) balconiensis (Blanchard and Knudson) n. comb., and discuss the classifi cation of Cabotia Ragonot as a subgenus of Ancylosis.

Book Synopsis Field Crop Arthropod Pests of Economic Importance by : Peter A. Edde
Download or read book Field Crop Arthropod Pests of Economic Importance written by Peter A. Edde and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2021-08-21 with total page 1004 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field Crop Arthropod Pests of Economic Importance presents detailed descriptions of the biology and ecology of important arthropod pest of selected global field crops. Standard management options for insect pest control on crops include biological, non-chemical, and chemical approaches. However, because agricultural crops face a wide range of insect pests throughout the year, it can prove difficult to find a simple solution to insect pest control in many, if not most, cropping systems. A whole-farm or integrated pest management approach combines cultural, natural, and chemical controls to maintain insect pest populations below levels that cause economic damage to the crop. This practice requires accurate species identification and thorough knowledge of the biology and ecology of the target organism. Integration and effective use of various control components is often enhanced when the target organism is correctly identified, and its biology and ecology are known. This book provides a key resource toward that identification and understanding. Students and professionals in agronomy, insect detection and survey, and economic entomology will find the book a valuable learning aid and resource tool. - Includes insect synonyms, common names, and geographic distribution - Provides information on natural enemies - Is thoroughly referenced for future research
Book Synopsis Crambinae (Crambidae: Lepidoptera) of Ohio by : Devon A. Rogers
Download or read book Crambinae (Crambidae: Lepidoptera) of Ohio written by Devon A. Rogers and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of the North American Crambinae sod webworm taxonomy, phylogenetic history, and biology is presented. Traditional analysis, combined with modern genetic analysis has changed and solidified the placement of these species. Previously cryptic and unidentifiable larvae were identified using genetic analysis of the mitochondrial CO1 gene and an evaluation of potential host plant associations is given. DNA sequencing is a useful tool that can be used to identify unknown sod webworm larvae, including the especially difficult to identify first and second instar larvae. Only Parapediasia teterrella larvae were recovered from the short-cut, golf course-type, creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera), as was a single Agriphila ruricolella. Fissicrambus mutabilis was obtained from lawn-height Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) and turf type tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea). Sod webworm adults were monitored with a standard blacklight trap between 2009 and 2013. Each year 14 species were recovered from the light trap. Species obtained from the managed turfgrass yielded only a fraction of the number of species attracted to the light trap. The sod webworm species Euchromius ocellus first appeared in late 2012. This is a first report for this species in Ohio.
Book Synopsis Pheromone Communication in Moths by : Jeremy D. Allison
Download or read book Pheromone Communication in Moths written by Jeremy D. Allison and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2016-10-25 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Common among moths is a mate-finding system in which females emit a pheromone that induces males to fly upwind along the pheromone plume. Since the chemical pheromone of the domesticated silk moth was identified in 1959, a steady increase in the number of moth species whose pheromone attractants have been identified now results in a rich base for review and synthesis. Pheromone Communication in Moths summarizes moth pheromone biology, covering the chemical structures used by the various lineages, signal production and perception, the genetic control of moth pheromone traits, interactions of pheromones with host-plant volatiles, pheromone dispersal and orientation, male pheromones and courtship, and the evolutionary forces that have likely shaped pheromone signals and their role in sexual selection. Also included are chapters on practical applications in the control and monitoring of pest species as well as case studies that address pheromone systems in a number of species and groups of closely allied species. Pheromone Communication in Moths is an invaluable resource for entomologists, chemical ecologists, pest-management scientists, and professionals who study pheromone communication and pest management.
Book Synopsis Moths of Western North America by : Jerry A. Powell
Download or read book Moths of Western North America written by Jerry A. Powell and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2009-05-27 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insects boast incredible diversity, and this book treats an important component of the western insect biota that has not been summarized before—moths and their plant relationships. There are about 8,000 named species of moths in our region, and although most are unnoticed by the public, many attract attention when their larvae create economic damage: eating holes in woolens, infesting stored foods, boring into apples, damaging crops and garden plants, or defoliating forests. In contrast to previous North American moth books, this volume discusses and illustrates about 25% of the species in every family, including the tiny species, making this the most comprehensive volume in its field. With this approach it provides access to microlepidoptera study for biologists as well as amateur collectors. About 2,500 species are described and illustrated, including virtually all moths of economic importance, summarizing their morphology, taxonomy, adult behavior, larval biology, and life cycles.
