Book excerpt: This book provides a rich and cutting-edge analysis of one of the most prominent literary groups in Latin America: the Mexican Crack Writers. The first part explores the history of the group and its relation to the Latin American literary tradition, while the second part is devoted to the critical analysis of the works of each of the authors: Ricardo Chávez Castañeda, Ignacio Padilla, Pedro Ángel Palou, Eloy Urroz and Jorge Volpi. The volume is further enriched by the inclusion, in the appendix, of the two manifestos of the group: the Crack Manifesto and the Crack Postmanifesto (1996-2016). It will be of great interest to students and scholars focusing on contemporary Latin American literature.

Book excerpt: Choice Outstanding Academic Title "State-of-the-art yet accessible analyses that significantly expand understanding of the role of anarchism in Latin America. . . . Will long be a standard text that provides [an] important reference for scholars and students of labor and social movement history."--Choice "A vivid picture of the transnational nature of the anarcho-syndicalist/anarchist movement."--Anarcho-Syndicalist Review "A pioneering collection of essays on the world of anarchists, anarcho-syndicalists and libertarian thinkers in Latin America."--Barry Carr, coeditor of The New Latin American Left: Cracks in the Empire "An important contribution to a recent trend which sees anarchism not as derived from a European center but as a genuine Latin American phenomenon."--Bert Altena, coeditor of Reassessing the Transnational Turn: Scales of Analysis in Anarchist and Syndicalist Studies "Thoughtful, well-researched, and well-written. As a collection, this goes a long way to furthering our understanding not just of anarchism in Latin America, but of anarchism more generally."--Mark Leier, author of Bakunin: The Creative Passion. In this groundbreaking collection of essays, anarchism in Latin America becomes much more than a prelude to populist and socialist movements. The contributors illustrate a much more vast, differentiated, and active anarchist presence in the region that evolved on simultaneous--transnational, national, regional, and local--fronts. Representing a new wave of transnational scholarship, these essays examine urban and rural movements, indigenous resistance, race, gender, sexuality, and social and educational experimentation. They offer a variety of perspectives on anarchism’s role in shaping ideas about nationalism, identity, organized labor, and counterculture across a wide swath of Latin America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Spanish journalist reveals what the Drug War really means: the danger it poses to the political stability of weak democracies, human rights and development and its environmental impact. In an important and desperately needed alternative view on the 'war on drugs, ' Boville explores in depth the relationship betweenthe United States and Latin America, explaining the political need of the U.S. government to develop a useful tool to extend American authority after the Cold War. She depicts Andean society and the cocaine culture, with all of the social, political, environmental and economic changes brought about by drug trafficking, and provides essential information on how the Drug War currently works in order to predict what the future may hold. The book has proven widely popular in Spanish, especially in Latin America. In the complex web of today's politics, this courageous and intelligent text offers an objective, critical look at all aspects influencing the war on drugs. RELEVANT ACADEMIC COURSES: Political Science, International Relations, History, Economics, Latin American Studies, Anthropology. Other works on this topic are mostly anecdotal; none of them provides an historic and environmental perspective, and none gives importance to international relations as this book does. This is an essay about the past and the future, useful for academic purposes, but also for general information about the €current drug war in Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Bolivia and the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the Crack of Dawn is a story about teamwork. Each of our team members, individual and organization, brought a wealth of resource in the form of knowledge, experience, and diversity. Diversity in our experience was not limited to ethnicity alone but also different age groups, religious backgrounds, types of organizations, different cultures customs and national origin, and different socioeconomic backgrounds. To sum that up, our events included peoples from all walks of life. Engaging creativity and innovation through democratic processes, we were able to transform our meager financial resources into the production of desired objectives and outcomes, as discussed in this book. We had our high and low moments, and many in between. We did not stop in our tracks when the tunnel became darker. We moved forward wading our way through the darkness, holding each others hand in true team spirit taking one step at a time. We shared, cared and cheered until we were At the Crack of Dawn. I hope that this book will inspire others to continue moving forward in their volunteer work or what ever their progressive undertakings may be. I also assure you that engaging teamwork, and especially in these hard pressed, slow economic times, the synergy will transform your world. God speed!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cocaine was once considered the elite's drug, with a price so high that only the very wealthy could afford it, and thought by many to be 'safe'. But during the 1980s, a dangerous and cheap derivative began appearing on the street. This drug, crack, is a cocaine free-base produced relatively safely and easily. Because of its low production costs, crack became popular among the lower classes, leading to an epidemic in the late 1980s, with estimates that over one million people used crack cocaine. The drug's name became synonymous with gangs, crime, and violence. Because of the intensity and apparent suddenness of the crack crisis, people began to wonder if there were any warning signs public officials missed and how exactly crack spread across the nation. Some even floated the theory that agencies like the CIA and FBI encouraged the use of crack in inner cities. No matter where it came from, crack is a menace that, though no longer 'epidemic', must be combated along with all other illegal drugs. This book makes a close examination of the development, responses to, and effect of the crack cocaine crisis in the United States. Included are descriptions of cocaine, crack, and the free-basing process. Also examined are the health questions surrounding the abuse problems and the allegations that governmental authorities had advance knowledge of crack. With the war on drugs a perpetual and critical battle in America, the facts and analyses presented here are of paramount importance to the understanding of a major issue of society's safety.

In 2010, women held just seventeen of the world's 252 executive posts - slightly less than seven percent. In Shattered, Cracked, or Firmly Intact?, Farida Jalalzai explores the patterns of women executive's paths, powers, and potential impacts, examining the global and national mechanisms that prevent women from attaining executive office. Combining a broad understanding of global dynamics of executive power with detailed studies of individual women leaders, Shattered, Cracked, or Firmly Intact? analyzes how institutionally embedded gender expectations limit women's representational impact.

Going beyond presenting critical case studies of social inequality and education, this book features achievement cases that depict Latinos as active actors-not hopeless victims- in the quest for social and economic mobility. Chapters examine the ways in which college students, high school youth, English language learners, immigrant Latino parents, queer homeless youth, the children of Mexican undocumented immigrants, and undocumented immigrant youth all work in local settings to improve their quality of life and advocate for their families and communities. Taken together, these counternarratives will help educators and policymakers fill the cracks in the schoolyard that often create disparity and failure for youth and young adults.

Book excerpt: Recent comparative, interdisciplinary scholarship has underscored the Inquisition s function in the imperial and colonial Iberian world, particularly in relation to the development of modernity. This book illustrates and enhances these debates on the Inquisition s relationship to imperialism, colonialism, and modernity through specific case studies of New Christians who became the target of the Inquisition. Drawing on research in the archives of the Spanish and the Portuguese Inquisition in different parts of the Iberian Atlantic World, it analyzes literary writings and inquisitorial testimonies produced by individuals of Jewish heritage who lived in the Iberian Atlantic world during the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and brings to light the direct and mediated discourse produced by New Christians, revealing the still veiled contributions of an important but understudied ethnic and social group.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strategic Occidentalism examines the transformation, in both aesthetics and infrastructure, of Mexican fiction since the late 1970s. During this time a framework has emerged characterized by the corporatization of publishing, a frictional relationship between Mexican literature and global book markets, and the desire of Mexican writers to break from dominant models of national culture. In the course of this analysis, Ignacio M. Sánchez Prado engages with theories of world literature, proposing that “world literature” is a construction produced at various levels, including the national, that must be studied from its material conditions of production in specific sites. In particular, he argues that Mexican writers have engaged in a “strategic Occidentalism” in which their idiosyncratic connections with world literature have responded to dynamics different from those identified by world-systems or diffusionist theorists. Strategic Occidentalism identifies three scenes in which a cosmopolitan aesthetics in Mexican world literature has been produced: Sergio Pitol’s translation of Eastern European and marginal British modernist literature; the emergence of the Crack group as a polemic against the legacies of magical realism; and the challenges of writers like Carmen Boullosa, Cristina Rivera Garza, and Ana García Bergua to the roles traditionally assigned to Latin American writers in world literature.
