Book Synopsis Saying What We Mean by : Eugene Gendlin
Download or read book Saying What We Mean written by Eugene Gendlin and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first collection of Eugene T. Gendlin’s groundbreaking essays in philosophical psychology, Saying What We Mean casts familiar areas of human experience, such as language and feeling, in a radically different light. Instead of the familiar scientific emphasis on what is conceptually explicit, Gendlin shows that the implicit also comprises a structure that can be made available for recognition and analysis. Developing the traditions of phenomenology, existentialism, and pragmatism, Gendlin forges a new path that synthesizes contemporary evolutionary theory, cognitive psychology, and philosophical linguistics.

Book excerpt: "As the story unfolds, monkeys mourn, hats remember, guns regret, and Veronica's voice invades Henry's ears. The voice - perhaps the voice of loss, perhaps the voice of God - itself becomes a character, mourning and desiring every bit as much as the characters it possesses." "V is based on a story legendary in the author's family about their mysterious Brazilian relatives and their lives in a postwar Sao Paulo Jewish community. Like most family myths, the story changes every time it is told."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis Hermeneutics and the Natural Sciences by : Robert P. Crease
Download or read book Hermeneutics and the Natural Sciences written by Robert P. Crease and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable volume attests to the world-wide development of a hermeneutical approach to the natural sciences. Questions raised by the essays include: What is a phenomenology of 'scientific' perception? How does meaning arise out of laboratory situations? How do individuals or groups come to terms with the particular problem situations in which they find themselves by drawing on the available conceptual and practical resources which structure these situations? The essays are organized around three central themes. One group of authors (Heelan, Kockelmans, and Gremmen/Jacobs) recalls and applies existing historical resources of hermeneutical phenomenology to current scientific and social issues. A second group (Kisiel, Eger) considers the differences between a specifically hermeneutical approach to science and related approaches such as cultural studies and social constructivism. A third group (Ihde, Gendlin) seeks to forge new directions and tools for understanding natural scientific practice. As Crease's introductory essay makes plain, the authors share the commitment of hermeneutical philosophy to the priority of meaning over technique, the primacy of the practical over the theoretical, and the priority of situation over abstract formulation. In the process, the authors revive and transform the ancient Greek idea that the key to living well, to being fully and authentically human, resides primarily in the exercise of the practical not the theoretical virtues, in the art of doing well in the workworld and acting well in the polis.

Book Synopsis Scenes from the Catastrophe by : Michael Washburn
Download or read book Scenes from the Catastrophe written by Michael Washburn and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Why can’t we all just get along?” Rodney King famously asked as Los Angeles burned. A quarter of a century later, the question has more power and resonance than ever. The tales in Scenes from the Catastrophe reflect our fractured world, capturing the misadventures and travails of the marginal and the displaced, of people aching for an affirmation of who they are and where they belong. These short stories examine the fault lines of citizens’ personal and professional lives in the twenty-first century and the causes of the subterranean rumblings that so often herald violence. In “The Reckoning,” a revolutionary ideology gone berserk leads to mass killings of financial sector professionals. In “The Forgotten Case,” a cruel prank exposes the politically correct machinations behind life on a remote college campus. “Another Manhattan” relates the abduction of an editor of a once fiercely anti-corporate alternative weekly newspaper. “The Ordeal” depicts the consequences of a failed comedian’s unraveling in a city on the verge of riots. The violent and shocking tales in this book depict the death of civilization.
