Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The blanketed Wyoming sky was getting more threatening as each minute went by. Old-timers called it a mean snow sky. It was a thick, smooth, low cover of clouds in scary shades of gray. Colors that made your heart beat a little faster. The forecasters said this was "a bad one." It was Christmas Eve day. The story that was to be played out would begin early in the day, with the players being put in place, one by one. Some were friends and others were complete strangers, each assigned their own special reason to be there and each important in His eyes. Eventually the one in charge would say "action," enabling the night to play out as He had intended, for His reasons. That is, if everyone played their parts correctly. The old barn was ready. The heat coming from the wood stove would keep all warm. The old weathered oak planks used for the walls would manage to stay standing and keep the cold out, but it would take the faith of each player, new faith and old faith, to reach the outcome He intended. By noon, the entrance to the Kahler Ranch had taken on a dreaded, lonely appearance, as did the main road that ran out front. Snow was building up on the crossbar, making it hard to read the name of the ranch. The trees that Chico had tied up along the fence were taking a beating, their limbs sagging from the weight of the snow. Steph's red bows struggled to stay in place. The only traffic out on the road would be very early on, a few cars and trucks attempting to make that last desperate trip to town, each one praying that the storm would hold off, allowing them the needed time to get safely home. People knew time was running out. By late afternoon, there would be no travelers on the roads. Only five special people would find themselves out in the storm and they would share the same destiny-to find the Lane Light.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THREE GENERATIONS UNDER ONE TURRET: from bestselling author Antoinette Stockenberg comes a witty, modern fairy tale of romance and family and ghostly star-crossed lovers. For centuries, Fair Castle stood peaceably enough in the north country of England, until its suddenly impoverished owners were forced to sell it—to a suddenly wealthy American couple who had the castle moved, stone by stone, to a knoll overlooking the Hudson River in New York. There they've lived happily, though not very lavishly, with their daughter and granddaughters, all of them chipping in to give tours of the castle while still nurturing their artistic sides. And then one day, when no one is looking, a tall, dark, and very handsome stranger appears—along with the usual tourists—in the Great Hall of Fair Castle. Wildly rich from the sale of a software company he founded and then sold, William Braddock, Baron of Norwood, is on a mission to conquer all within Fair Castle and then move the thing back to England. Why not? It's his family's castle. It's his beloved grandmother's fond dream, and Will will do anything to make it come true for her. But a fiery opponent stands in his way: Elinor MacLeish, the owners' granddaughter and a successful writer of children's books that are set in a castle very much like the one she lives in. Will finds himself jousting repeatedly with Elinor, except when he's crossing swords with another who also has an agenda. And then there is the pair whose ties to Fair Castle are far, far more ancient than those of anyone else .... Reviews "This humorous, well-crafted and inventive novel is certain to establish Stockenberg as a major voice in women's fiction." —Publishers Weekly "A delightful blend of goosebumps, passion and treachery that makes this novel a truly exhilarating read. Ms. Stockenberg delivers once again." —Romantic Times "A truly wonderful modern fairy tale—complete with meddlesome ghosts, an enchanted castle, and a knight in shining armor. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking for the good in people is where you find happiness in yourself. One of my sweet grandchildren said that she wanted more than anything to be like everybody else, to which I replied, aEURoeHow boring that would be if all little girls were alike. We all have our gifts. You can sing like an angel, I cannot sing my way out of a paper bag. I can paint a bird, you cannot now; but you can open your eyes and sing like him.aEUR I do not pretend to be where I want to be in life. Even at eighty-one, I have things left to do. I have failed many times, but I have also succeeded as many or probably many more times. I have been disappointed in myself and in others many times, but I have been inspired and awed by their goodness even more times. I have a family that I love and for whom I have great hopes. They may not change the world; but I hope they will make it a better place in their own part of it, letting their lights shine before all and each other. I am so grateful to God for the gift of long life, even though it is filled with aches, pains, doctors, and all those things that work to make new possibilities and continued opportunities, maybe another bird to paint. And finally, I want to give thanks for Margaret, my mom and dad, grandparents, and all those who surrounded me with love. And especially Margaret for sharing these wonderful stories of lives well lived.

Download or read book At Home written by Bill Bryson and published by Doubleday Canada. This book was released on 2010-10-05 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of that classic of modern science writing, A Short History of Nearly Everything, comes a work of what you might call domestic science: our homes, how they work, and the fascinating history of how they got that way. Bill Bryson and his family live in a Victorian parsonage in a part of England where nothing of any great significance has happened since the Romans decamped. Yet one day, he began to consider how very little he knew about the ordinary things of life as found in that comfortable home. To remedy this, he formed the idea of journeying about his house from room to room to "write a history of the world without leaving home." The bathroom provides the occasion for a history of hygiene; the bedroom, sex, death, and sleep; the kitchen, nutrition and the spice trade; and so on, as Bryson shows how each has figured in the evolution of private life. Whatever happens in the world, he demostrates, ends up in our house, in the paint and the pipes and the pillows and every item of furniture.
Book Synopsis We All Giggled by : Thomas O. Hueglin
Download or read book We All Giggled written by Thomas O. Hueglin and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2011-09-28 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We All Giggled tells the stories of two families that came together when the author’s parents met and married in 1945. The Hüglins had lost most of their fortune in the course of two world wars, and the Wachendorff s had survived the Nazi years despite their Jewish ancestry. The families’ roots are traced back to a vineyard in southern Germany, a jail in Geneva, the Conservatory in St. Petersburg, and the hometown of a Jewish merchant in Silesia. This engaging book centres on the author’s recollections of his grandparents, his parents, and his own growing up in postwar Germany in an environment of bourgeois stability and comfort. As the author chronicles his family’s ups and downs and abiding love for music, food, and art across several generations, a rich tapestry of anecdotes unfolds—about opera singers, restaurants, and travels, and about family relations, romance, and the kind of “impromptu reactions to people, places, and situations that often result in uncontrollable giggles.”

Book Synopsis My Pursuit of the Axis of Evil by : Bill Cox
Download or read book My Pursuit of the Axis of Evil written by Bill Cox and published by Publication Consultants. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Pursuit of the Axis of Evil is about meetings and adventures with interesting people in Asia and Alaska. I followed the advice of a long-ago traveler named Pythagoras, who admonished us to check your prejudices at every port of entry." As a result, I mostly traveled solo, merged with the locals, and got to see, experience, and understand things that would not have been otherwise possible. Plus, the locals can keep you out of trouble and get you out of trouble if you get into it! In Alaska, I sought out native elders and others in the far corners of this enormous state, street people, and the many interesting and famous people visiting or passing through. And high-level politicians—often at the opposite end of the political and social issues spectrum than me. I learned a lot, made new friends, and often got to see things from a different perspective. Encounters were overwhelmingly positive, and it is these people to whom I dedicate My Pursuit of the Axis of Evil. I commend you for your natural curiosity and desire to go out into the world and see for yourself. Pursuit of the Axis of Evil is a great primer on how to engage and interact with the incredible variety of people we meet on international travel - people that appear on the surface to be very different from you and me. Robert DeLaurentis, Polar and Equitorial Circumnavigator/Citizen of the World. "
