Book Synopsis Coverage, Coarseness and Classification by : Itai Gurvich

Book excerpt: Many service providers utilize priority queues. Many consumers revile priority queues. However, some form of priority service may be necessary to maximize social welfare. Consequently, it is useful to understand how the priority scheme chosen by a revenue-maximizing firm differs from the one a social planner would use. We examine this in a single server-queue with customers that draw their valuation from a continuous distribution and have a per-period waiting cost that is proportional to their realized valuation. The decision maker must post a menu offering a finite number of waiting time-price pairs. There are then three dimensions on which a revenue maximizer and social planner can differ: coverage (i.e., how many customer in total to serve), coarseness (i.e., how many classes of service to offer), and classification (i.e., how to map customers to priority levels). We show that differences between the decision makers' priority policies are all about classification. Both are content to offer very coarse schemes with just two priority levels, and they will have negligible differences in coverage. However, differences in classification are persistent. Further, a revenue maximizer may -- relative to the social planner -- have too few or too many high priority customers. Whether the revenue maximizer over- or under-stuffs the high priority class depends on a measure of consumer surplus that is captured by the mean residual life function of the valuation distribution. In addition we show that there is a large class of valuation distributions for which a move from first-in, first-out service to a priority scheme that places those with higher waiting costs at the front of the line reduces consumer surplus.

Book Synopsis Foraminiferal Genera and Their Classification by : Alfred R. Loeblich Jr.
Download or read book Foraminiferal Genera and Their Classification written by Alfred R. Loeblich Jr. and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-08 with total page 2046 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies with the foraminiferida have often been hindered by widely scattered, inaccessible sources. This two-volume reference (text in one volume, plates in the other) examines 3,568 of the world's generic taxa, representing all geologic ages. Covering twice the number of genera as any other available reference, it is by far the most complete source on the foraminiferida.
Book Synopsis Runtime Verification by : Panagiotis Katsaros
Download or read book Runtime Verification written by Panagiotis Katsaros and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-04 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 23rd International Conference on Runtime Verification, RV 2023, held in Thessaloniki, Greece, during October 3–6, 2023. The 13 full papers and 7 short papers presented in this book together with 4 tutorial papers and 2 invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 39 submissions. The RV conference is concerned with all aspects of novel lightweight formal methods to monitor, analyze, and guide the runtime behavior of software and hardware systems. Runtime verification techniques are crucial for system correctness, reliability, and robustness; they provide an additional level of rigor and effectiveness compared to conventional testing and are generally more practical than exhaustive formal verification.

Book Synopsis Remote Sensing Image Analysis: Including the Spatial Domain by : Steven M. de Jong
Download or read book Remote Sensing Image Analysis: Including the Spatial Domain written by Steven M. de Jong and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-07-26 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remote Sensing image analysis is mostly done using only spectral information on a pixel by pixel basis. Information captured in neighbouring cells, or information about patterns surrounding the pixel of interest often provides useful supplementary information. This book presents a wide range of innovative and advanced image processing methods for including spatial information, captured by neighbouring pixels in remotely sensed images, to improve image interpretation or image classification. Presented methods include different types of variogram analysis, various methods for texture quantification, smart kernel operators, pattern recognition techniques, image segmentation methods, sub-pixel methods, wavelets and advanced spectral mixture analysis techniques. Apart from explaining the working methods in detail a wide range of applications is presented covering land cover and land use mapping, environmental applications such as heavy metal pollution, urban mapping and geological applications to detect hydrocarbon seeps. The book is meant for professionals, PhD students and graduates who use remote sensing image analysis, image interpretation and image classification in their work related to disciplines such as geography, geology, botany, ecology, forestry, cartography, soil science, engineering and urban and regional planning.

Book Synopsis Bonus Options in Health Insurance by : Peter Zweifel
Download or read book Bonus Options in Health Insurance written by Peter Zweifel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confronted with the continuing cost expansion in the health care sector, policy makers face a dilemma: limiting moral hazard in medical care requires that consumers participate in the cost, yet copayment is strongly resisted by today's socially insured. Thus, the experiences of three private German health insurers will be of interest to physicians, social scientists, and policy makers. Insurer A writes conventional plans with deductibles and coinsurance; B pays back three-monthly premiums as a fixed rebate for no claims; while C runs an experience-rated bonus system starting with a rebate of three-monthly premiums for the first year without a claim, reaching a maximum of five after three years. While both rebates and bonuses are quite popular among insureds, this study shows that bonus options are particularly effective in limiting the demand for ambulatory and even hospital care. But what about adverse effects on health caused by the desire to save one's bonus? On this issue, there is some surprising evidence.
