Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a rapidly changing culture, many of us struggle to talk about faith. We can no longer assume our friends understand words such as grace or gospel. Others, like lost and sin, have become so negative they are nearly conversation-enders. Jonathan Merritt knows this frustration well. After moving from the Bible Belt to New York City, he discovered that the sacred terms he used to describe his spiritual life didn’t connect as they had in the past. This launched him into an exploration of an increasing American reluctance to talk about faith—and the data he uncovered revealed a quiet crisis of affecting millions. In this groundbreaking book, Jonathan revives ancient expressions through incisive cultural commentary, vulnerable personal narratives, and surprising biblical insights. Both provocative and liberating, Learning to Speak God from Scratch will breathe new life into your spiritual conversations and invite you into the embrace of the God who inhabits them.

Book excerpt: Modern secular culture has severely eroded the religious foundations on which traditional sacramental practice was based. Built upon the sacramental bedrock, the very Christian identity and mission were affected. German Martinez looks at this challenge from the perspective of freedom as an opportunity to develop a sacramental worldview relevant to the new millennium. To this effect, he applies a series of methodologies and fresh pastoral approaches to the highly complex sacramental reality and to each individual sacrament. Beginning with ten key interpretative elements, he offers a coherent synthesis of the remarkable development of sacramental theology in our time. Envisioned for both scholarly research and pastoral ministry, this book presents the key issues of a renewed sacramentality--rooted in ordinary life and celebrated in the liturgical mystery. This theology is grounded in a biblical, patristic, historical and theological background. It tries to articulate especially the Christological, ecclesial, individual and social aspects of the celebration of the sacraments as a dynamic and organic whole, emphasizing their spirituality. The material is organized into four parts: - the Sacramental Way of Life, - the Initiation and Foundational Church, - the Healing Church - the Church at the service of Communion. Highlights: - scholarly, yet pastorally sensitive - perfect text for courses on the sacraments - solid, one-volume, comprehensive text +

Book excerpt: Our Lady of Good Success, to Mother Mariana, on January 21, 1610: "It will be difficult to receive the Sacrament of Baptism and also that of Confirmation...the devil will make a great effort to destroy the Sacrament of Confession by means of people in positions of authority." "Unbridled passions will give way to a total corruption of customs because Satan will reign through the Masonic sects, targeting the children in particular to ensure general corruption. "Unhappy, the children of those times! Seldom will they receive the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. As for the sacrament of Penance, they will confess only while attending Catholic schools, which the devil will do his utmost to destroy by means of persons in authority. "They will focus principally on the children in order to sustain this general corruption. Woe to the children of these times! It will be difficult to receive the Sacrament of Baptism, and also that of Confirmation... "The same will occur with Holy Communion. Oh, how it hurts me to tell you that there will be many and enormous public and hidden sacrileges! There will be an unspeakable profanation of the Holy Eucharist in our time: "...the enemies of Jesus Christ, instigated by the devil, will steal consecrated Hosts from the churches so that they may profane the Eucharistic species. My Most Holy Son will see himself cast upon the ground and trampled upon by filthy feet." "As for the Sacrament of Matrimony... it will be attacked and deeply profaned... The Catholic spirit will rapidly decay; the precious light of the Faith will gradually be extinguished... "The Sacrament of Matrimony, which symbolizes the union of Christ with the Church, will be thoroughly attacked and profaned. Masonry, then reigning, will implement iniquitous laws aimed at extinguishing this Sacrament. They will make it easy for all to live in sin, thus multiplying the birth of illegitimate children without the Church's blessing.... Added to this will be the effects of secular education, which will be one reason for the dearth of priestly and religious vocations. Like the Eucharist, the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony will be profaned in a multitude of ways resulting in "iniquitous laws with the objective of doing away with this Sacrament, making it easy for everyone to live in sin, encouraging the procreation of illegitimate children born without the blessing of the Church. The Christian spirit will rapidly decay, extinguishing the precious light of faith until it reaches a point that there will be an almost total and general corruption of customs." "The Sacrament of Holy Orders will be ridiculed, oppressed, and despised, for in this both the Church and God Himself are oppressed and reviled, since He is represented by His priests.... The Devil will try to persecute the ministers of the Lord in every possible way; he will labor with cruel and subtle astuteness to deviate them from the spirit of their vocation and will corrupt many of them. These depraved priests, who will scandalize the Christian people, will make the hatred of bad Catholics and the enemies of the Roman Catholic and Apostolic Church fall upon all priests... People will not esteem the Sacrament of Holy Unction and many will die without receiving it. Our Lady predicted that, because of this, "many souls will be deprived of innumerable graces, consolations and the strength they need to make that great leap from time to eternity." This book examines God's plan for man's salvation, from the sacrifices of Melchisedech and the Patriachs, through the old testament Temple sacrifices, up till the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and the seven Sacraments, as well as, an evaluation of the Norvus Ordoe and the Usus Antiquior, the form and matter of their Sacraments; in the light of the deepest concerns expressed by Our Lady of Good Success

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the House Church Movement is gaining immense popularity throughout many denominational and independent faith communities""collectively standing as the largest "denomination" in the United States""sacramental and liturgical congregations are taking only the most tentative steps toward this venue of worship. Consequently, there exists a vacuum of guidelines or information to support this dynamic ministry model from a uniquely sacramental perspective. In this book, Dr. Andraeas examines the scriptural foundations for liturgical worship; the biblical, theological, and historical precedents for house churches; and how a union between priestly liturgy and house church worship complement and support each other. He concludes with a vigorous challenge for all sacramental and liturgical jurisdictions to engage their seminarians, clergy, and people in embracing this approach to church planting, evangelism, and community ministry while offering thoughtful and obtainable recommendations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume in the exciting new Interpretation series offers a comprehensive look at the theology of sacraments. For many church people, worship is about preaching and music. Baptism and the Lord's Supper are occasional additions to Sunday services. Recognizing that church-goers are uncertain about the need for sacraments, Ronald Byars describes the possibility that the very doing of worship--the actions observed, the postures assumed, the sound and sight of water, the smell and taste of bread and wine--will subtly alter the temper of the heart and the mind. If we encounter the sacraments honestly, they lead us to the very heart of the gospel.
