Book excerpt: At one time, thousands of one-room schools were located on school sections throughout rural sections of the country. Normally, one teacher was responsible for all subjects and grade levels, yet when enrollment increased two teachers would be assigned to a school. Students either walked, rode horse-back or traveled in a team and wagon to attend classes. The first schools had dirt floors, outdoor privies and a hitching post or corral for the students' horses. Those first teachers had to posses a passion for teaching, as the conditions were primitive and lacking in modern conveniences. The average wage for teachers was $12.00 a month. There were many schools that paid by the head or one dollar per pupil. Lodging was provided by the families hiring the teacher and she was expected to help with the cleaning and cooking. It was not uncommon for these first teachers to change boarding places every two weeks, to walk three to six miles to work no matter how unfavorable the weather. By the 1920s, teachers were making between $600.00 and $800.00 a year and schools were in session between Labor Day and April 15. The era of country schools has passed and most were consolidated into larger schools. In many cases their history has been lost, and this book attempts to preserve that history of the schools in Torrance County, New Mexico.

Book excerpt: Small isolated country schools were the major educational institution in rural America for more than two hundred fifty years until they were replaced by consolidated schools by the second half of the twentieth century. Country School Memories uses the techniques of oral history to capture ehe insights of forty-seven individuals who had participated in the one-room school experience as teachers or students during the period from 1900-1955. Beginning with an overview of rural education during the twentieth century, the authors analyze the distinctive pedagogy of rural schoolteachers, the character of the teachers, and the culture of the schools. They discuss the school consolidation movement that ended the reign of one-room schoolhouses and draw conclusions about lessons that can be learned by contemporary educators from old-time schools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Midwest's one-room schools were, Fuller observes, the most democratic in the nation. Located in small, independent school districts, these schools virtually wiped out illiteracy, promoted democratic values, and opened up new vistas beyond the borders of their students' lives. Entire communities, Fuller shows, revolved around these schools. At various times they were used as churches, polling places, sites of political caucuses, and meeting halls for local organizations. But as America urbanized and the movement to consolidate took hold in rural counties, these little centers of learning were left at the margins of the educational system. Some were torn down, some left to weather away, some sold at auction, and still others transformed into museums. Despite its demise, Fuller argues, here was a school system that worked. His book offers a timely reminder of what schools can accomplish when communities work closely together to educate their children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The memoir of an innovative American educator and the remarkable school she built—“a lucid presentation of what progressive education can accomplish” (The New York Times). Over a century ago, American educator Caroline Pratt created an innovative school that fosters creativity and independent thought by asking the provocative question: “Was it unreasonable to try to fit the school to the child, rather than . . . the child to the school?” A strong-willed small-town schoolteacher who ran a one-room schoolhouse by the time she was seventeen, Pratt came to viscerally reject the teaching methods of her day, which often featured a long-winded teacher at the front of the room and rows of miserable children sitting on benches nailed to the floor. In this “persuasive presentation of progressive education,” Pratt recounts how she founded what is now the dynamic City and Country School in New York City, invented the “unit blocks” that have become a staple in classrooms around the globe, and played an important role in reimagining preschool and primary-school education in ways that are essential for the tumultuously creative time we live in today (Kirkus Reviews).

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2020 Silver Nautilus Book Award On a cold winter night in February of 1967, a large rock shattered a bedroom window in Virginia Walden Ford's home in Little Rock, Arkansas, landing in her baby sister's crib. Outside, members of the Ku Klux Klan burned a cross on her family's lawn. Faceless bigots were terrorizing Virginia, her parents, and her sisters–all because her father, Harry Fowler, dared to take a job as the assistant superintendent of personnel for the Little Rock School District. He was more than qualified, but he was black. In her searing new memoir, legendary school choice advocate Virginia Walden Ford recounts the lessons she learned as a child in the segregated south. She drew on those experiences—and the legacies handed to her by her parents and ancestors—thirty years later, when she built an army of parents to fight for school choice in our nation's capital. School Choice: A Legacy to Keep, tells the dramatic true story of how poor D.C. parents, with the support of unlikely allies, faced off against some of America's most prominent politicians—and won a better future for children.

Part 1 of the book explores the history of Black people in communities across the nation while Part 2 uses census reports, Google Earth, and other materials to investigate. One example includes Western Missouri on the eve of the Civil War. Part 3 involves design-based research in a social studies classroom where students investigated the history of Mobile, AL during the Civil Rights movement using technology. Throughout the book, the Inquiry Design Model (IDM) is emphasized and implemented.
