Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagining Vernacular Histories is centered on the idea of engaging with indigenous African cosmologies that signal at pluriversality. In conversation with Toyin Falola’s reading of the African pluriverse and his exploration of the idea of “ritual archives,” the contributors to this volume rethink the historical archive in search of vernacular histories. Simultaneously, they recognize the contributions from various other disciplines in pluralizing the term vernacular. The book brings together a wide range of topics, such as reflections on African historiography; the relationship between memory, history and literature; gender relations; and the construction of historical archives. While appropriating Falola’s conception of vernacular histories, the contributors collectively argue that pluriversality and ritual archives can potentially rescue African historical and creative scholarship from the sustained practices of epistemicide. Simultaneously, Imagining Vernacular Histories focuses on the emerging interdisciplinary conversations on constructing the pluriverse as well as on the geopolitics of knowledge production. Through a critical appreciation of Falola’s engagement with the ideas of postcoloniality, decolonizing epistemologies, and pluriversality, this book locates his scholarship in relation to postcolonial theory emerging from the Global South.

Book excerpt: Secrets are unearthed in the second installment of the Queenie Saga from the Sunday Times–bestselling author of The Letter and Let It Shine. Queenie Bedford fled her home in Blackburn, England, chased by the bitter knowledge that she and Rick Marsden, the man she loves, can never marry. But in 1965 she returns home again to stand by her friend Sheila Thorogood, imprisoned for running a brothel with her mother, Maisie. Though Rick had vowed to find her, Queenie took care that he should not know of her whereabouts. Moving in with the ailing Maisie to a magnificent, yet sorely neglected Edwardian house in Blackpool, she sets about transforming it into a sparklingly clean, highly respectable guesthouse. But will she ever be reunited with Rick? And will his search for her dredge up secrets some might say are best forgotten. . . ? The second book in the Queenie Saga, Let Loose the Tigers is perfect for fans of Lisa Wingate and Fiona Davis. Praise for the writing of Josephine Cox “Guaranteed to tug at the heartstrings of all hopeless romantics.” —The Sunday Post “Hailed quite rightly as a gifted writer in the tradition of Catherine Cookson.” —Manchester Evening News “Cox’s talent as a storyteller never lets you escape.” —Daily Mail

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Legend of Shara records the story of a deity from the third millennium BC. It explains how multiple religions, like Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, came to absorb a story well-understood by many followers of Hinduism. We explore the Hindu origins of the early Torah and its deep Puranic roots along with the historical backdrop that produced the Patriarchs, the stories of David, and finally, Exodus. How closely are these stories tied to Puranic equivalents, and why do they follow the same structure and function that we see in Hindu MahaPuranas like the Matsya Purana? From its origins in the Rig Veda, we trace the flow of the legend of Shara along with the rest of its Puranic backdrop into the Hurrian lands. From here, we explore the journey into Judah and its return with the rise of Judaism in the Middle East.

Book excerpt: Running Away With the Circus (or - "Now is the Winter of Our Missing Tent"), an is full of both humour and intrigue, as you will see by its opening sentence: If some clairvoyant had told me that I'd be spending my nights in a shipping container in Taiwan, guarding seven tigers, six Chihuahuas, five bears, four sea lions, three geese, two horses and a "killer dog" named Ludwig, I'd have said "You're supposed to read the tea leaves, not smoke them." This book takes a look at what happens when people of radically different cultures try to work together. Acclaimed television producer (and composer of the musical Anne of Green Gables) Norman Campbell said, "Your lively prose astounds me... It is really great writing and observing... You are a brilliant writer! I mean it!"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Immanuel Kants Critique of Pure Reason is one of the most important and influential philosophical works in the history of Western thought, it is also known for being as inaccessible as it is brilliantan unreadable masterpiece. And as a cardinal text for students of philosophy in both the graduate and undergraduate levels, Kants first critique and its dense, ungainly style can therefore stand as an intimidating and even monumental challenge. But for careful students interested in exploring this pivotal work, Kants first critique can have profound implications for their understandings of both metaphysics and epistemologyas well as of the history of philosophy in general. The Grad Students Guide to Kants Critique of Pure Reason is a valuable resource for students, professors, and scholars interested in learning more about Kants philosophy. It provides definitions for key terms that students of Kants first critique will need to understand, such as analytic, synthetic, a priori, and a posteriori. It discusses the nature and role of synthetic a priori judgments as well as Kants notion of experience and some of its important components. Including an examination of the historical context of the problem at the heart of Kants critique, it also explains Kants transcendental idealism, the transcendental proof, and his so-called first antinomy. With terse and lucid treatments of Kants categories and principlesas well as a discussion of Kants critical refutation of skepticism, idealism, and dogmatic rationalismthis guidebook will offer students an illuminating way to make sense of Kants masterwork.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nationalist and Revolutionary While a high school student, I actively participated in the Mahatma Gandhis 1942 movement Quit India. I felt disappointed because only a few prominent leaders like Gandhi and Nehru were imprisoned. On Sept. 9, 1945, under the patronage of the Dadu District British Collector, the town dignitaries including my grand father and Mr. Tuljaram Nagrani, the principal of the town High school, along with the matriculate students had assembled at the Hindu temple to celebrate the victory of the Allies at the WW II. Sweets were distributed. I threw the sweets on the floor. The reason I did this was not because I sided with the Axis powers. But because Indian soldiers were fighting for Britain, as India was not a free country. Next morning, the Principal got me in his office and whipped me several times on my palms and ordered me to leave the school and come back with my parent. The principal told my father that Jagat to pay a fine of Rs. 5 and threatened that in case of denial I will be rusticketed (expelled from school as a bad character student) and no school would admit me. I am proud of my father that he said that only Jagat to decide. I said that paying fine means admission of the guilt. In my opinion it was not a guilt. I, with recommendation of my class teacher Mr. Chandnani, got admission in the P. H. High School, Dadu, only about 50 miles away from my home town. In 1947 on the eve of partition, there was an accidently bomb explosion in Karachi, suspected of an RSS activity. Several RSS leaders were arrested. A Khalsa police officer secretly alerted my grand father to hide me to avoid arrest. I, along with a few RSS pracharaks, secretly reached Karachi to take a ship for Okha, Gujarat, then train to Baroda. In 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse. Because Godse was an RSS member, the whole RSS all over India was banned. I participated in the collective protest against the injustice of punishing the whole RSS organization because of the crime by its only one RSS member. Whole family can not be punished because of the crime of its one member. I was imprisoned in Baroda jail for four months. Thousands of RSS members all over India were imprisoned. Dr. Jagat K. Motwani

Book excerpt: Tigers of the World, Second Edition explores tiger biology, ecology, conservation, management, and the science and technology that make this possible. In 1988, when the first edition was published, tiger conservation was still in its infancy, and two decades later there has been a revolution not only in what is known, but how information about tigers is obtained and disseminated. In the fast changing world of conservation, there is a great need to summarize the vast and current state-of-the-art, to put this into historical perspective, and to speculate in what yet remains to be done. Tigers of the World, Second Edition fulfills this need by bringing together in a unique way the world’s leading tiger experts into one volume. Despite the challenges ahead, there are bright spots in this story and lessons aplenty not only for tiger specialists but large carnivore specialists, conservation biologists, wildlife managers, natural resource policymakers, and most importantly the caring public. Examines the past twenty years of research from the world’s leading tiger experts on biology, politics, and conservation Describes latest methods used to disseminate and obtain information needed for conservation and care of this species Includes coverage on genetics and ecology, policy, poaching and trade, captive breeding and farming, and the status of Asia’s last wild tigers Excellent resource for grad courses in conservation biology, wildlife management, and veterinary programs New volume continues the classic Noyes Series in Animal Behavior, Ecology, Conservation and Management
