Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is the first of its kind exclusively devoted to counterexamples in operator theory and includes over 500 problems on bounded and unbounded linear operators in Hilbert spaces. This volume is geared towards graduate students studying operator theory, and the author has designated the difficulty level for each counterexample, indicating which ones are also suitable for advanced undergraduate students. The first half of the book focuses on bounded linear operators, including counterexamples in the areas of operator topologies, matrices of bounded operators, square roots, the spectrum, operator exponentials, and non-normal operators. The second part of the book is devoted to unbounded linear operators in areas such as closedness and closability, self-adjointness, normality, commutativity, and the spectrum, concluding with a chapter that features some open problems. Chapters begin with a brief “Basics” section for the readers’ reference, and many of the counterexamples included are the author’s original work. Counterexamples in Operator Theory can be used by students in graduate courses on operator theory and advanced matrix theory. Previous coursework in advanced linear algebra, operator theory, and functional analysis is assumed. Researchers, quantum physicists, and undergraduate students studying functional analysis and operator theory will also find this book to be a useful reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jordan's classification theorem for linear transformations on a finite-dimensional vector space is a natural highlight of the deep relationship between linear algebra and the arithmetical properties of polynomial rings. Because the methods and results of finite-dimensional linear algebra seldom extend to or have analogs in infinite-dimensional operator theory, it is therefore remarkable to have a class of operators which has a classification theorem analogous to Jordan's classical result and has properties closely related to the arithmetic of the ring $H^{\infty}$ of bounded analytic functions in the unit disk. $C_0$ is such a class and is the central object of study in this book.A contraction operator belongs to $C_0$ if and only if the associated functional calculus on $H^{\infty}$ has a nontrivial kernel. $C_0$ was discovered by Bela Sz.-Nagy and Ciprian Foias in their work on canonical models for contraction operators on Hilbert space. Besides their intrinsic interest and direct applications, operators of class $C_0$ are very helpful in constructing examples and counterexamples in other branches of operator theory. In addition, $C_0$ arises in certain problems of control and realization theory. In this survey work, the author provides a unified and concise presentation of a subject that was covered in many articles. The book describes the classification theory of $C_0$ and relates this class to other subjects such as general dilation theory, stochastic realization, representations of convolution algebras, and Fredholm theory. This book should be of interest to operator theorists as well as theoretical engineers interested in the applications of operator theory. In an effort to make the book as self-contained as possible, the author gives an introduction to the theory of dilations and functional models for contraction operators. Prerequisites for this book are a course in functional analysis and an acquaintance with the theory of Hardy spaces in the unit disk. In addition, knowledge of the trace class of operators is necessary in the chapter on weak contractions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: {\it Elements of Operatory Theory} is aimed at graduate students as well as a new generation of mathematicians and scientists who need to apply operator theory to their field. Written in a user-friendly, motivating style, fundamental topics are presented in a systematic fashion, i.e., set theory, algebraic structures, topological structures, Banach spaces, Hilbert spaces, culminating with the Spectral Theorem, one of the landmarks in the theory of operators on Hilbert spaces. The exposition is concept-driven and as much as possible avoids the formula-computational approach. Key features of this largely self-contained work include: * required background material to each chapter * fully rigorous proofs, over 300 of them, are specially tailored to the presentation and some are new * more than 100 examples and, in several cases, interesting counterexamples that demonstrate the frontiers of an important theorem * over 300 problems, many with hints * both problems and examples underscore further auxiliary results and extensions of the main theory; in this non-traditional framework, the reader is challenged and has a chance to prove the principal theorems anew This work is an excellent text for the classroom as well as a self-study resource for researchers. Prerequisites include an introduction to analysis and to functions of a complex variable, which most first-year graduate students in mathematics, engineering, or another formal science have already acquired. Measure theory and integration theory are required only for the last section of the final chapter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for third and fourth year university mathematics students (and Master students) as well as lecturers and tutors in mathematics and anyone who needs the basic facts on Operator Theory (e.g. Quantum Mechanists). The main setting for bounded linear operators here is a Hilbert space. There is, however, a generous part on General Functional Analysis (not too advanced though). There is also a chapter on Unbounded Closed Operators. The book is divided into two parts. The first part contains essential background on all of the covered topics with the sections: True or False Questions, Exercises, Tests and More Exercises. In the second part, readers may find answers and detailed solutions to the True or False Questions, Exercises and Tests.Another virtue of the book is the variety of the topics and the exercises and the way they are tackled. In many cases, the approaches are different from what is known in the literature. Also, some very recent results from research papers are included.

Presenting a broad overview of the results obtained in the field since the early 1950s, this is the first monograph to be dedicated to this powerful tool and its variants. Starting from historical notes and classical versions with their different proofs, the book then explores asymptotic versions, generalizations to non-normal operators, generalizations to unbounded operators, counterexamples, applications, intertwining relations, and conjectures. A rich collection of applications is included. Aimed at postgraduate students as well as researchers interested in operator theory, this book could also be taught as a specialized course.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph only requires of the reader a basic knowledge of classical analysis: measure theory, analytic functions, Hilbert spaces, functional analysis. The book is self-contained, except for a few technical tools, for which precise references are given.Part I starts with finite-dimensional spaces and general spectral theory. But very soon (Chapter III), new material is presented, leading to new directions for research. Open questions are mentioned here. Part II concerns compactness and its applications, not only spectral theory for compact operators (Invariant Subspaces and Lomonossov's Theorem) but also duality between the space of nuclear operators and the space of all operators on a Hilbert space, a result which is seldom presented. Part III contains Algebra Techniques: Gelfand's Theory, and application to Normal Operators. Here again, directions for research are indicated. Part IV deals with analytic functions, and contains a few new developments. A simplified, operator-oriented, version is presented. Part V presents dilations and extensions: Nagy-Foias dilation theory, and the author's work about C1-contractions. Part VI deals with the Invariant Subspace Problem, with positive results and counter-examples.In general, much new material is presented. On the Invariant Subspace Problem, the level of research is reached, both in the positive and negative directions.

It provides unique insights into the power of abstract methods and techniques in dealing successfully with numerous applications stemming from classical analysis and mathematical physics. The book features diverse topics in the area of operator semigroups, including partial differential equations, martingale and Hilbert transforms, Banach and von Neumann algebras, Schrödinger operators, maximal regularity and Fourier multipliers, interpolation, operator-theoretical problems (concerning generation, perturbation and dilation, for example), and various qualitative and quantitative Tauberian theorems with a focus on transfinite induction and magics of Cantor. The last fifteen years have seen the dawn of a new era for semigroup theory with the emphasis on applications of abstract results, often unexpected and far removed from traditional ones. The aim of the conference was to bring together prominent experts in the field of modern semigroup theory, harmonic analysis, complex analysis and mathematical physics, and to present the lively interactions between all of those areas and beyond. In addition, the meeting honored the sixtieth anniversary of Prof C. J. K. Batty, whose scientific achievements are an impressive illustration of the conference goal. These proceedings present contributions by prominent scientists at this international conference, which became a landmark event. They will be a valuable and inspiring source of information for graduate students and established researchers.
