Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER "Destined to become an adventure classic." —Anchorage Daily News Hailed as "gripping" (New York Times) and "beautiful" (Washington Post), The Adventurer's Son is Roman Dial’s extraordinary and widely acclaimed account of his two-year quest to unravel the mystery of his son’s disappearance in the jungles of Costa Rica. In the predawn hours of July 10, 2014, the twenty-seven-year-old son of preeminent Alaskan scientist and National Geographic Explorer Roman Dial, walked alone into Corcovado National Park, an untracked rainforest along Costa Rica’s remote Pacific Coast that shelters miners, poachers, and drug smugglers. He carried a light backpack and machete. Before he left, Cody Roman Dial emailed his father: “I am not sure how long it will take me, but I’m planning on doing 4 days in the jungle and a day to walk out. I’ll be bounded by a trail to the west and the coast everywhere else, so it should be difficult to get lost forever.” They were the last words Dial received from his son. As soon as he realized Cody Roman’s return date had passed, Dial set off for Costa Rica. As he trekked through the dense jungle, interviewing locals and searching for clues—the authorities suspected murder—the desperate father was forced to confront the deepest questions about himself and his own role in the events. Roman had raised his son to be fearless, to be at home in earth’s wildest places, travelling together through rugged Alaska to remote Borneo and Bhutan. Was he responsible for his son’s fate? Or, as he hoped, was Cody Roman safe and using his wilderness skills on a solo adventure from which he would emerge at any moment? Part detective story set in the most beautiful yet dangerous reaches of the planet, The Adventurer’s Son emerges as a far deeper tale of discovery—a journey to understand the truth about those we love the most. The Adventurer’s Son includes fifty black-and-white photographs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long characterized as an exceptional country within Latin America, Costa Rica has been hailed as a democratic oasis in a continent scorched by dictatorship and revolution; the ecological mecca of a biosphere laid waste by deforestation and urban blight; and an egalitarian, middle-class society blissfully immune to the violent class and racial conflicts that have haunted the region. Arguing that conceptions of Costa Rica as a happy anomaly downplay its rich heritage and diverse population, The Costa Rica Reader brings together texts and artwork that reveal the complexity of the country’s past and present. It characterizes Costa Rica as a site of alternatives and possibilities that undermine stereotypes about the region’s history and challenge the idea that current dilemmas facing Latin America are inevitable or insoluble. This essential introduction to Costa Rica includes more than fifty texts related to the country’s history, culture, politics, and natural environment. Most of these newspaper accounts, histories, petitions, memoirs, poems, and essays are written by Costa Ricans. Many appear here in English for the first time. The authors are men and women, young and old, scholars, farmers, workers, and activists. The Costa Rica Reader presents a panoply of voices: eloquent working-class raconteurs from San José’s poorest barrios, English-speaking Afro-Antilleans of the Limón province, Nicaraguan immigrants, factory workers, dissident members of the intelligentsia, and indigenous people struggling to preserve their culture. With more than forty images, the collection showcases sculptures, photographs, maps, cartoons, and fliers. From the time before the arrival of the Spanish, through the rise of the coffee plantations and the Civil War of 1948, up to participation in today’s globalized world, Costa Rica’s remarkable history comes alive. The Costa Rica Reader is a necessary resource for scholars, students, and travelers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the consequences—positive, negative, and otherwise—of tourism in Costa Rica. Based on ethnographic research and interviews with tourists, tour operators, tourists-turned-settlers, and locals living in tourist destinations, this book brings together these varied perspectives with the aim of presenting forms of tourism beneficial to all parties. To examine both pitfalls and positive outcomes of tourism, it compares modes of tourism in destinations that are locally owned and foreign owned, ecotourism destinations, beach tourism, adventure tourism sites, and agrotourism projects. Furthermore, the author draws from two decades of research in two distinct communities to trace the ways in which the development of tourism in one community provided the springboard for changing gender roles and new opportunities for women, and, in the other, how the promise of tourism has spurred a cultural revitalization and positive change in Indigenous identity. Interviews with three generations of women in one tourist destination show generational changes in perspectives on tourism, and interviews covering the same time span show how in an Indigenous reservation poised to enter the heritage tourism industry, tourism offers a positive alternative to exploitative forms of labor and the stigma once associated with Indigeneity in that region. Interviews with locals in all four sites reveal the ways in which tourism carried out conscientiously would benefit them. These, juxtaposed with interviews of tourists regarding what they seek through tourism, offer a means of designing a mutually beneficial form of tourism. In sum, this book puts into conversation the varied views of those positioned differently within the realm of tourism in order to inform tourists and foreign land owners as to how they might glean the advantages that such an experience may bring to the traveler, while also playing up the benefits of these endeavors to local communities, and minimizing the potential damage these practices may cause.

Book excerpt: Costa Rica is more beautiful than many other countries and the locals are probably happier than most of the world's people. By expatriating you gain a different perspective on life, not unique to Latin American countries, rather when leaving your home country everything is new and different. The focus of this book is on how to ease the transition and addresses the hazards and pitfalls would-be expatriates can avoid through facts, opinions and shared feelings regarding: money matters, retirement living, personal growth through expatriating, foreign culture, tourism versus residency, what to wear, the weather, what to bring, culture shock, friends, being a foreigner, clothes, laundry, what to eat, buying a home, online shopping, earthquakes, gardening, cooking, traveler's sickness, paying for doctors, dentists, residency and housing, Costa Rican Spanish, shopping and more. This book is about being a stranger in a strange land, a chronicle of expatriate retirement to a new country, culture and community in the form of a series of "Letters to the North" as the author recounts his first year of experiences to his friends back home. It does not matters where you go to live, or from where you depart, you can learn to overcome the challenges. Now, the author lives full time in his home in Costa Rica with his Costa Rican wife. They have gardens, employment, friends from the North and from Costa Rica and live quite contently in a small town in the mountains outside San Jose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October, 2000, the author and his wife moved from California to Costa Rica to begin a new life in a new country. Martin had a theory that retiring to a foreign country would present so many challenges as to make it impossible to fall into a rut, to become bored, and eventually depressed as happens to so many retirees. It appears as though his theory was a correct one. At Home in Costa Rica: An Adventure in Living the Good Life is the story of how Martin and Robin gradually adapted to their new country, and tells a fascinating tale of the trials and tribulations of learning a new way of life and a new language, of making unusual friends, of building homes, of rehabilitating animals, of surviving the machinations of alien institutions bureaucracies, of adjusting their first-world pace and needs to those of an emerging country, and much more. Told in an anecdotal style, based on letters they've been sending home for three and a half years, At Home in Costa Rica is filled with funny and touching stories about re-learning how to live in one of the most beautiful, peaceful, and stable Democracies in the world. The book is ideal for anyone who has either gone through this wonderful and at times trying process, for anyone who is contemplating living the expatriate's life, or for anyone who enjoys reading about life in other countries.
