Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beekeeping for the Beginner in California California is less noted for honey production than for the production of bees and queens for sale to Canadians and to other western bee keepers living under severe winter conditions. The 1928 sales were 70 tons of bees and queens. Comparatively few persons are likely to become successful com mercial beekeepers, as few possess the necessary temperament, the frugality, insight, and skill required. A prospective commercial bee keeper should go very slowly until he has had considerable actual experience. The majority of farmers and many residents of small towns can, however, successfully keep a few stands of bees with little expense and time. Beekeeping in Relation to the 0rchardist. - Perhaps the most important, but not the best known, work of the honeybee is the conveyance of pollen from flower to flower, thus assisting in the fertilization of plants, and assuring their fruitfulness. Bees are so necessary for the successful pollination of many fruit trees, nut trees, and seed plants that the growing of certain horticultural products has been handicapped by the recent decline in beekeeping. Among numerous reasons for the growing difficulty of successful bee culture may be mentioned, as chief, the wide dissemination of organisms causing death to the bee larvae and thus increasing expenses, and secondly, the replacement of vast areas of native nectar-yielding plants by the expansion of cultivation. In spite of the increased difficulties, however, the keeping of a few colonies of bees is still possible for many. It must be emphasized that bees will not work free and pay their own board as many uninformed enthusiasts suppose. Bees require consistent effort to keep them in good con dition if they are not to become a. Complete nuisance and a focus of infection to other bees nearby. For the good of the industry, the smaller beekeepers should become familiar with bees, their habits, and their diseases. Bees are conservationists. They supplement their extremely im portant service of pollinizing food and forage crops, by elaborating from the nectar of the plants thus benefited one of the most delicious, nutritious, and readily digestible foods. Hive bees, in addition to gathering nectar, must collect and store pollen in order to live and to rear their young. The body of the bee is provided with various modified parts for gathering, carrying, and manipulating the pollen. The relationship between bees and plants. Is here marvelously close for bees cannot live without the plant blossom products. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Cornell University Professor Roger A. Morse's classic book on the production of comb honey. He considered comb honey production and queen rearing to be the benchmark of an accomplished beekeeper. Comb honey is exactly as the bees produce it, with natural comb and no heating or filtering during the production by the bees. Comb honey is a gourmet item in many fine eating establishments, often coupled with fine cheeses and fresh fruit. The book is one of the best on the topic of comb honey production using traditional methods.

Book excerpt: “If I could only read one writer from now until the end of my life, it would be Dorothea Benton Frank." —Elin Hilderbrand, the New York Times bestselling author Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of New York Times bestselling author Dorothea Benton Frank’s Carolina Lowcountry in this evocative tale that returns at long last to her beloved Sullivans Island. Beekeeper Holly McNee Jensen quietly lives in a world of her own on Sullivans Island, tending her hives and working at the local island library. Holly calls her mother The Queen Bee because she’s a demanding hulk of a woman. Her mother, a devoted hypochondriac, might be unaware that she’s quite ill but that doesn’t stop her from tormenting Holly. To escape the drama, Holly’s sister Leslie married and moved away, wanting little to do with island life. Holly’s escape is to submerge herself in the lives of the two young boys next door and their widowed father, Archie. Her world is upended when the more flamboyant Leslie returns and both sisters, polar opposites, fixate on what’s happening in their neighbor’s home. Is Archie really in love with that awful ice queen of a woman? If Archie marries her, what will become of his little boys? Restless Leslie is desperate for validation after her imploded marriage, squandering her favors on any and all takers. Their mother ups her game in an uproarious and theatrical downward spiral. Scandalized Holly is talking to her honey bees a mile a minute, as though they’ll give her a solution to all the chaos. Maybe they will. Queen Bee is a classic Lowcountry Tale—warm, wise and hilarious, it roars with humanity and a dropperful of whodunit added for good measure by an unseen hand. In her twentieth novel, Dorothea Benton Frank brings us back to her beloved island with an unforgettable story where the Lowcountry magic of the natural world collides with the beat of the human heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the heart of every bee hive is a queen bee. Since her well-being is linked to the well-being of the entire colony, the ability to find her among the residents of the hive is an essential beekeeping skill. In QueenSpotting, experienced beekeeper and professional “swarm catcher” Hilary Kearney challenges readers to “spot the queen” with 48 fold-out visual puzzles — vivid up-close photos of the queen hidden among her many subjects. QueenSpotting celebrates the unique, fascinating life of the queen bee and chronicles royal hive happenings such as The Virgin Death Match, The Nuptual Flight — when the queen mates with a cloud of male drones high in the air — and the dramatic Exodus of the Swarm from the hive. Readers will thrill at Kearney’s adventures in capturing these swarms from the strange places they settle, including a Jet Ski, a couch, a speed boat, and an owl’s nesting box. Fascinating, fun, and instructive, backyard beekeepers and nature lovers alike will find reason to return to the pages again and again.

Book excerpt: Pollinators-insects, birds, bats, and other animals that carry pollen from the male to the female parts of flowers for plant reproduction-are an essential part of natural and agricultural ecosystems throughout North America. For example, most fruit, vegetable, and seed crops and some crops that provide fiber, drugs, and fuel depend on animals for pollination. This report provides evidence for the decline of some pollinator species in North America, including America's most important managed pollinator, the honey bee, as well as some butterflies, bats, and hummingbirds. For most managed and wild pollinator species, however, population trends have not been assessed because populations have not been monitored over time. In addition, for wild species with demonstrated declines, it is often difficult to determine the causes or consequences of their decline. This report outlines priorities for research and monitoring that are needed to improve information on the status of pollinators and establishes a framework for conservation and restoration of pollinator species and communities.

Book excerpt: Writer and beekeeper Jack Mingo, who set up his first backyard hive in 2004, offers his humorous and unique observations of the world of the mystical, matriarchal, gentle, sweet bee in Bees Make the Best Pets. Full of fun facts, Mingo shares a potpourri of bee and bee-keeping trivia; practical tips and legend and lore. And here are just some of the reasons bees make the best pets: • They don’t bark and whine all night if you leave them in the backyard. In fact, they rather prefer it. • Bees don’t demand petting, attention, or a food dish. They find their own food. • Bees greet you with honey for your toast and beeswax for your candles, not dead mice. • You will never be tempted to succumb to your worst self, dress your bees in funny costumes, and humiliate them on YouTube. • When bees pay attention to your plants, it's not to dig them up. They actually help them blossom, bear fruit, and thrive. • Bees don’t track mud, poison ivy, or fleas into your house. • Bees don’t have kittens.
