This book was released on 2014 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The External Thermal and Moisture Management System (ETMMS), typically seen in deep energy retrofits, is a valuable approach for the roof-only portions of existing homes, particularly the 1 1/2-story home. It is effective in reducing energy loss through the building envelope, improving building durability, reducing ice dams, and providing opportunities to improve occupant comfort and health. This third study sought to understand the costs for using the roof-only ETMMS protocol on 1 1/2-story homes in cold and very cold climates. The goal is to help residential building professionals, designers, product manufacturers, and insurance providers understand the costs and benefits of a roof-only ETMMS process when comparing methods to solve energy loss and ice dam problems.

Download or read book Insulating Modernism written by Kiel Moe and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2014-08-20 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the best way to consider energy in buildings? For over a century, the building industry has largely focused on ideas of insulation and isolation for its energetic practices. A growing movement of designers claim that other concepts and practices are required for the non-isolated energy systems of architecture. This book describes the history, theory and facts of the mainstream isolation technologies and the emerging alternative design approaches. It is a book on the scientific, material, and design history of building isolation; but more importantly, it is a book on isolated and non-isolated perspectives on energy in architecture. Written by a registered practicing architect with detailed technical knowledge, who is at the same time a researcher and experienced teacher, the aim is to understand the different scientific, architectural and cultural approaches to energy and to promote a non-isolated perspective: a thermodynamically accurate, ecologically powerful, culturally relevant, and architecturally ambitious perspective on energy in architecture.

Book excerpt: In this second study on solutions to ice dams in 1-1/2 story homes, five test homes located in both cold and very cold climates were analyzed for air leakage reduction rates following modifications by independent contractors on owner-occupied homes. The reason for choosing this house type was they are very common in our area and very difficult to air seal and insulate effectively. Two projects followed a roof-only Exterior Thermal Moisture Management System (ETMMS) process. One project used an interior-only approach to roof air sealing and insulation. The remaining two projects used a deep energy retrofit approach for whole house (foundation wall, above grade wall, roof) air leakage and heat loss reduction. All were asked to provide information regarding project goals, process, and pre and post-blower door test results. Additional air leakage reduction data was provided by several NorthernSTAR Building America industry partners for interior-applied, roof-only modifications on 1-1/2 story homes. The data represents homes in the general market as well as homes that were part of the state of Minnesota weatherization program. A goal was to compare exterior air sealing methods with interior approaches. This pool of data enabled us to compare air tightness data from over 220 homes using similar air seal methods.
