Book excerpt: From the creator of the bestselling series The Last Kids on Earth, this hilarious middle grade adventure follows a young boy thrust into the world of selling hot dogs in space! Over the course of one very strange night, Cosmoe went from being an adventure-seeking, thirteen-year-old Earthling orphan to a hot-dog-slinging space traveler. He has all the adventure he once craved and more aboard the Neon Wiener—part spaceship, part food truck—selling their trademark “Galactic Hot Dogs.” Cosmoe and the rest of the crew journey to food competitions across the universe serving up the wildly popular wieners…until they gain a troublesome stowaway. The half-evil, half-awesome Princess Dagger doesn’t plan on going anywhere, and her presence on the ship means her all-evil mother is gunning for the Neon Wiener. Cosmoe rallies his friends to fight space jerks in all their many forms and vows to protect the princess. But can a group of hot dog enthusiasts face down an evil space queen?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Text for back cover page. Bright Hole Cosmos invites you to replace the Big Bang paradigm of a unique cosmic origin and expansion by multi-bang expansions followed by contractions within a permanent cosmic recycling of all electronuclear material. The progenitors of stars and galaxies are found in expanding shells colliding with their neighbours along dynamic common walls which are home to groups of galaxies that will in turn migrate to clusters. Large clusters end up in the crushing gravitational claws of giant black holes whose final compacted destiny is a maxi-bang event, the birth of a new expanding bubble. A new method is presented to compute galactic rotation velocities from Doppler shift field data whereby Newtonian dynamics is adapted and applied to point-like corrections on a disk. The Standard Model of electronuclear particles is introduced with a questioning on the speed of gravity and the Planck units where a mare incognitum is found.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multibang Cosmos invites you to replace the big bang paradigm of a mysterious and unique cosmic origin and expansion by the observed local multibang expansions within a permanent cosmic recycling of all electronuclear material. The progenitors of stars and galaxies are found in expanding shells colliding with their neighbors along dynamic common walls that are home to groups of galaxies that will in turn migrate to clusters. Large clusters end up in the crushing gravitational claws of giant black holes whose final compacted destiny is a local maxibang event—the birth of a new expanding bubble. A new method is presented to compute galactic rotation velocities from Doppler shift field data whereby Newtonian dynamics is adopted and applied to point-like corrections on a disk or a stack of disks where velocities differ strongly from those from a sphere. The model is applied to calculate the corrected mass of four typical galaxies wherein dark matter is repelled. It is extended to a number of low- and high-surface-brightness galaxies for comparison. Corrections for linear large-scale cosmic features are briefly presented. The Standard Model of electronuclear particles is introduced by questioning the speed of gravity and the unknown parameter extensions toward the Planck units where a mare incognitum is found with a new hypothetical black force acting against the collapse of black holes.

Book excerpt: Will Self and Ralph Steadman join forces once again in a further post-millennial meditation on the vexed relationship of psyche and place in a globalised world; Psycho Too brings together a second helping of their very best words and pictures from 'Psychogeography', the columns they contributed to the Independent for half a decade. The introduction, 'Journey Through Britain' is a new extended essay by Self, accompanied by Steadman's inimitable images. It tells of how Self journeyed to Dubai, that Götterdammerung of the contemporary built environment, in order to walk the length of the artificial Britain-shaped island, in the offshore luxury housing development known as 'The World'. Ranging from Istanbul to Los Angeles and from the crumbling coastline of East Yorkshire to the adamantine heads of Easter Island, Will Self's engaging and disturbing vision is once again perfectly counter-pointed by Ralph Steadman's edgy and dazzling artwork.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volker Schlöndorff’s Cinema: Adaptation, Politics and the “Movie-Appropriate” examines the work of major postwar German director Volker Schlöndorff in historical, economic, and artistic contexts. Incorporating a film-by-film, twenty-eight chapter study, Hans-Bernhard Moeller & George Lellis reveal a complexity and formal ambitiousness of Schlöndorff that is comparable to that found in Wenders, Herzog, and Fassbinder. In spite of Schlöndorff’s successes with films like The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum and The Tin Drum, as well as his acclaimed work in the U.S. with Death of a Salesman, Gathering of Old Men and The Handmaid’s Tale, this is the first in-depth critical study of the filmmaker’s career. In the context of film and television history, this book relates Schlöndorff’s oeuvre to the New German Cinema, to his formative years as a student and production assistant in France, and to his roots in the Weimar cinema’s tradition. It reveals how Schlöndorff entered into the German film production system in the 1960s, how he came to rely on German public television in the 1970s, and then moved to the international and American financing in the 1980s, attempting to redevelop the Babelsberg studios in a 1990s post-Wall Germany while continuing to make his own films into the 21st century. The book captures how Schlöndorff’s nearly half century of ongoing creativity and productivity ties together. The authors analyze the artistry of each Schlöndorff movie arguing that his output as a whole embodies a provocative and sometimes contradictory set of balances. Schlöndorff combines commercial interest with significant artistic ambition, blends the kinesthetic pleasures of moving images with the seriousness of fine literature, links the intensity of individualized personal experience to an awareness of broader political issues, and represents a specifically German sensibility even as he reaches out to the international audiences. The authors demonstrate the cyclical recurrence in his cinema of certain themes (individual and collective rebellion, fascist suppression, masochistic love), narrative patterns (the Western, the thriller, the subjective mood piece), and stylistic approaches (Brechtian Verfremdung, the creation of careful leitmotif structures, the use of the grotesque). In over thirty years of filmmaking, Schlöndorff has produced a remarkable unified body of work that deserves the attention of a book-length study. Authors Hans-Bernhard Moeller and George Lellis offer the first such study of its kind. Volker Schlöndorff’s Cinema: Adaptation, Politics, and the “Movie-Appropriate” features forty-one illustrations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rudolph Koenig was one of the more prolific and colourful instrument makers in the renowned nineteenth-century precision instrument trade of Paris. Beginning his career as a violin maker, in 1858 the young Prussian immigrant shifted his talents towards the growing field of acoustics. Altered Sensations is a portrait of his vibrant atelier, a place of construction, commerce and experiment. For over forty years it was also a popular meeting place for scientists, artisans, musicians and teachers. Using archival and collection research from across North American and Europe, David Pantalony has traced the material and social influences of this space on the development of modern acoustics. In particular, he has detailed the manner in which Koenig modified, extended, spread and challenged Hermann von Helmholtz's Sensations of Tone. A large part of the research on Koenig comes from the actual products of his workshop which survive in museums and collections around the world. The second section of Altered Sensations provides a Catalogue Raisonné of Koenig’s entire line of instruments, including their history, details from specific examples, locations, and references in the literature. This catalogue will serve as a practical guide for curators and researchers as well as a comprehensive overview of nineteenth-century acoustical practice.
