Book Synopsis Beyond Style and Genre by : Christofer Jost

Book excerpt: Popular culture today manifests itself in a dense network of styles and genres, while the aesthetic preferences of the audience are highly differentiated. Besides, popular culture also implies a diversity of aesthetic strategies, discourses and value systems that traverse the symbolic demarcations between styles and genres and are effective across different artistic fields and individual media. Aesthetic concepts such as camp, retro or trash are expressions of a transgressive mode of production that facilitates a multitude of cross-connections between aesthetic spaces of experience. The volume brings together authors from different disciplines who approach aesthetic concepts in popular culture on a historical, theoretical and methodological level, analyze them on the basis of various aesthetic phenomena, or discuss aspects relevant to their theoretical contextualization, such as the emergence and establishment of artistic practices and aesthetic value systems.

Book Synopsis One Dusk at Dar: Impressions of visting a river and her people by : Bishnu Goswami
Download or read book One Dusk at Dar: Impressions of visting a river and her people written by Bishnu Goswami and published by Bishnu Goswami. This book was released on with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern world is increasingly becoming an urban world. Although lush with ever-increasing avenues of creative expression, the urban world is getting increasingly homogenized. It is very hard, for example, to guess which country a supermarket is from. This brings monotony and people want freedom in the old lap of nature, as the trends in newly industrialized countries show. After all, a luxury house or a yatch can cost millions of dollars, but we can venture a guess that it is absolutely incomparable to the air, water and skies the nature has to offer. Here we take a look in this regard to a river the author considers one of such priceless wonders the nature shares for free. The river in this book is Dar, flowing over the Gangetic valley in India. The explores Dar in his bicycle, and gets down to the bed in his footsteps. He has done this for over many years, yet it never grows old for him. In this book, he is on yet another journey to his dear river on a hot, at least in the beginning, summer day. He describes his journey in the first person, narrating what he sees and what thoughts occurs to him at that very instant. This work does not attempt to explain all the experiences Dar has to offer, as they will certainly not fit in a handy book. Instead, it gives a cross section of an afternoon's experience, sprinkled with a moderate topping of how the past relates to the present. The tone of the book is not excessively made vivid and far away from reality. Instead, attention has been paid to the personal perspective of the journey of reflection and relaxation. The adjacent photo shows the, previously unpublished in a book, poem the author wrote during his college days. Many other poems were also written by the author which are related to Dar and many of them have been published in his other collections. Hope you enjoy the read!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘I tore through the pages. A book I’ll read over and over again’ CANDICE CARTY-WILLIAMS, author of Queenie ____________________________________________ We've all had our share of dodgy landlords, mould and awkward house shares. But journalist Kieran Yates has had more than most: by the age of twenty-five she'd lived in twenty different houses across the country, from council estates in London to car showrooms in rural Wales. In prose that sparkles with humour and warmth, Yates charts the heartbreaks and joys of a life spent navigating the chaos of the housing system. Drawing on interviews with marginalised tenants across the country and the stories behind our interiors, she explores the unexpected ways we can fight back – finding beauty in the wreckage of a broken system, friendships in cramped housing conditions, and home even in the most fragile circumstances. All the Houses I’ve Ever Lived In is at once a rallying cry for change, a gorgeous coming-of-age story and a love letter to home in all its forms. ____________________________________________ ‘Illuminating, thoughtfully written, damning’ OBSERVER ‘I read this in two sittings . . . so incisive it's hard to put down’ PANDORA SYKES ‘A beautiful exposition of home and what it means. Book Synopsis Making Poetry Happen by : Sue Dymoke
Download or read book Making Poetry Happen written by Sue Dymoke and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-29 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: UKLA Academic Book Award 2016: Highly Commended Making Poetry Happen provides a valuable resource for trainee and practicing teachers, enabling them to become more confident and creative in teaching what is recognized as a very challenging aspect of the English curriculum. The volume editors draw together a wide-range of perspectives to provide support for development of creative practices across the age phases, drawing on learners' and teachers' perceptions of what poetry teaching is like in all its forms and within a variety of contexts, including: - inspiring young people to write poems - engaging invisible pupils (especially boys) - listening to poetry - performing poetry Throughout, the contributors include practical, tried-and-tested materials, including activities, and draw on case studies. This approach ensures that the theory is clearly linked to practice as they consider teaching and learning poetry to those aged between 5 and 19 from different perspectives, looking at reading; writing; speaking and listening; and transformative poetry cultures. Each of the four parts includes teacher commentaries on how they have adapted and developed the poetry activities for use in their own classroom.
Book Synopsis As Many Nows as I Can Get by : Shana Youngdahl

Book excerpt: A Seventeen Best Book of the Year A New York Public Library Top Ten Best Book of the Year A Kirkus Best Book of the Year For fans of All the Bright Places, Looking for Alaska, and I'll Give You the Sun comes "a daring, inventive story about love and loss and longing, reminding us that every choice can be a new chance. A dazzling, not-to-be-missed debut." —Kathleen Glasgow, author of Girl in Pieces In one impulsive moment the summer before they leave for college, overachievers Scarlett and David plunge into an irresistible swirl of romance, particle physics, and questionable decisions. Moving between the present and the past, this is the story of a grounded girl who's pulled into a lightning-strike romance with an electric-charged boy, and the enormity of the aftermath. Scarlett and David have known each other all their lives in small-town Colorado, where David is just another mountain in the background, until, one day, he is suddenly so much more than part of the scenery. David is magnetic, spontaneous, a gravitational force. And Scarlett, pragmatic, wry, eye on the future, welcomes the pull he has on her even as she resists it. Drawn to his wild energy, to the relief she feels in throwing off the weight of everyone’s expectations, Scarlett still can’t ignore the tug of her own hopes and ambitions, while David struggles between his feelings for her, which might be deeper than either of them will admit, and his own destructive impulses. Heartbreaking, hopeful, and unflinchingly honest, this is a deeply moving account of a girl dealing with grief and guilt, and learning to reconcile who she thinks she needs to be with the person she’s been all along. It’s an aching, transporting reminder that between the past that shapes us and the future ahead, we have only the present to forgive ourselves and forge ahead. "Deeply authentic . . . Download or read book Love for Sale written by David Hajdu and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A personal, idiosyncratic history of popular music that also may well be definitive, from the revered music critic From the age of song sheets in the late nineteenth-century to the contemporary era of digital streaming, pop music has been our most influential laboratory for social and aesthetic experimentation, changing the world three minutes at a time. In Love for Sale, David Hajdu—one of the most respected critics and music historians of our time—draws on a lifetime of listening, playing, and writing about music to show how pop has done much more than peddle fantasies of love and sex to teenagers. From vaudeville singer Eva Tanguay, the “I Don’t Care Girl” who upended Victorian conceptions of feminine propriety to become one of the biggest stars of her day to the scandal of Blondie playing disco at CBGB, Hajdu presents an incisive and idiosyncratic history of a form that has repeatedly upset social and cultural expectations. Exhaustively researched and rich with fresh insights, Love for Sale is unbound by the usual tropes of pop music history. Hajdu, for instance, gives a star turn to Bessie Smith and the “blues queens” of the 1920s, who brought wildly transgressive sexuality to American audience decades before rock and roll. And there is Jimmie Rodgers, a former blackface minstrel performer, who created country music from the songs of rural white and blacks . . . entwined with the sound of the Swiss yodel. And then there are today’s practitioners of Electronic Dance Music, who Hajdu celebrates for carrying the pop revolution to heretofore unimaginable frontiers. At every turn, Hajdu surprises and challenges readers to think about our most familiar art in unexpected ways. Masterly and impassioned, authoritative and at times deeply personal, Love for Sale is a book of critical history informed by its writer's own unique history as a besotted fan and lifelong student of pop.

Book Synopsis Icebergs Dining Room and Bar 2002-2022 by : Maurice Terzini
Download or read book Icebergs Dining Room and Bar 2002-2022 written by Maurice Terzini and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrating 20 years of Icebergs Dining Room and Bar: the food, cocktails, music, art, and personalities that have celebrated one of Sydney’s most iconic restaurants. Icebergs Dining Room and Bar is an icon, standing sentinel over Bondi Beach and the powerful Pacific Ocean. Despite the beauty, the path from concept to restaurant was not always straightforward. What Maurice Terzini was asking people to see wasn’t there – and he wanted to keep it that way. The ocean was to be the hero; the rest, in essence, was to remain invisible. A place where conversations dominate the food; where art, music and beauty all share a place at that table. Of course, the food and drink have to be world-class, as do the design and service. To be on par with that ocean, you need to be irreproachable. It’s been challenging, but it’s also been the greatest of honours. This book tells the story of the past 20 years of that custodianship. There are tales of people, personalities and the influences that shaped the idea, a collection of our best known recipes from two decades of head chefs, cocktails from our award-winning bar and playlists from summers gone by. See the restaurant through the eyes of acclaimed architect Carl Pickering; peer into the minds of six of Australia’s best chefs – from Karen Martini to Monty Koludrovic; read about why a great wine list is about so much more than the wine, and then take a little taste of the indefinable magic – Maurice’s treatise on his signature rules of hospitality. There is so much that goes into making a restaurant disappear; much of it enclosed within these pages.
