Its 517 plates include not only the most important, well-known photographs and photomontages, but also works that have long been forgotten or are published for the first time. Book excerpt: "Although the book covers many aspects of Drtikol's career and life-work, it is mainly devoted to his photographs. 120 duotone and 8 colour full-page reproductions of Drtikol's works from the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague and a number of other public and private collections illustrate representative selections from all his creative periods, with an emphasis on Drtikol's masterly nudes from the second half of the 1920s, when he moved gradually from his beginnings in pictorialism and symbolism to react in his highly individual way to current avant-garde trends. The text, supplemented with almost fifty other reproductions, analyzes and characterizes Drtikol's photographs and locates them in the wider spiritual and artistic context of their time with the help of quotations from Drtikol's notes and correspondence. The monograph also contains a complete exhibition history, bibliographic listing, and a number of little known works, some never before published."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: Drawn from a broad range of photography, from works by famed photographers to anonymous images, Once Upon a Time in the East offers a portrait of Czechoslovakia across the 20th century, registering its dramatic changes of regime as well as more intimate scenes of daily life. Communist demonstrations and festivals are documented alongside domestic scenes in pubs and cottages. Among the historic moments recorded in this volume are the blasting of the Stalin monument in Prague in 1962 (taken by an unknown photographer); Milon Novotny's photographs of the funeral parade of Jan Palach in 1969; and an incredible series of surveillance photographs taken by an unidentified member of the Czech secret police, which furtively documents equally furtive assignations on the streets of Prague. Works by Ivo Gil, Josef Koudelka, Jindrich Streit, Miroslav Tichy, Jiri Toman and many others are also included.

Book excerpt: The series of photographs that Joseph Sudek created in the Mionsí Forest of Morovia's Beskid Mountains is perhaps the most classically Romantic and visually stunning body of work ever made by this important Czech photographer. In the late 1920s, while shooting the interior of Prague's iconic Cathedral of St. Vitus during its final phase of completion, Sudek learned a great deal about light. Years later, alone, deep in the virgin forest, he lay in wait for the light that he knew would lend the ancient trees their ghostly aspect--finding graceful compositions in isolated wilderness. Photography historian Antonín Dufek penned the introduction to this volume, which is the first to present such a comprehensive set of Sudek's photographs of the Mionsí Forest, the ruins surrounding Hukvaldy castle and the foothills of the Beskids. Josef Sudek, born in 1896 in Kolín, was a bookbinder and amateur photographer for several years before studying at the State School of Graphic Arts with Karel Novak. Along with a handful of other young Modernists, he founded the Czech Photographic Society in 1924. While maintaining a successful commercial career, Sudek nurtured a lifelong, Romantic fascination with light and mood. He died at the age of 80 in 1976.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are only a few figures in modern Czech art as legendary as the architect Jan Kotera. In his lifetime, Kotera was a symbol of the spirit of modernity, a pivotal role-player in early twentieth-century Czech fine art culture. A student of Otto Wagner, friend of Josef Hoffman and early member of the Viennese Secession, Kotera brought international standards to Czechoslovakia, introducing his country's architects to the work of Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright while retaining an interest in folk structures. Some of his most notable structures and designs include the City Museum in Hradec Králové, his own villa and studio in Vinohrady and his housing colony for railway employees in Louny.

Book excerpt: A brilliantly illustrated survey of modernist photography in Central Europe, published in association with the National Gallery of Art. In the 1920s and 1930s, photography became an immense phenomenon across Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Austria, and Poland. Through magazines and books, in advertisements and at exhibitions, from amateur clubs to avant-garde schools, photographs emerged as a key vehicle of modern consciousness. This book presents the work of approximately one hundred individuals whose creations exemplify the potential of photography in Central Europe between the two World Wars. Foto brings together for the first time works by recognized masters such as the Russian El Lissitzky, the Hungarian László Moholy-Nagy, and the German Hannah Hóch—all of whom developed their photographic ideas in Germany—with contemporaries like Karel Teige and Jaromír Funke (Czechoslovakia), Kazimierz Podsadecki (Poland), Károly Escher (Hungary), and Trude Fleischmann (Austria), who are less well known today. Organized thematically, the book explores topics from photomontage and war to gender identity, modern living, and the spread of Surrealism. It shows the shared experience of modernity in the region, whereby recently founded nations and dismantled empires alike sought their place within the new world order established in the aftermath of World War I. The illustrations, drawn from more than seventy collections in America and abroad, include several previously unpublished works as well as many others never before available in high-quality reproductions.
