Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers several aspects of the synthesis of composites by the pressureless infiltration technique. It describes the methods used to obtain green preforms, such as cold pressed and hot sintering, describing the heating time, load, and time required for pressing the preforms. Additionally, wettability phenomena, which is directly related on infiltration, is extensively described. Wettability process and interfacial reactions are analyzed in many ceramic-metal systems prior to fabricate the composites. A complete description of fabrication processes for Metal Matrix Composites is included. An extensive section on structural, chemical, and mechanical characterization of composites fabricated with aluminum and magnesium alloys as matrices reinforced with titanium carbide (TiC), aluminum nitride (AlN), silicon carbide (SiC) and alumina (Al2O3) is included. Relevant techniques for joining composites, such as welding and brazing are addressed. As well as issues pertaining to the corrosion and wear of composites are discussed as well. Corrosion behavior of some composites exposed to aqueous media was analyzed. Corrosion of composites using TiC and SiC like reinforcement and Al, Ni, and some Al-Cux, Al-Mgx and Al-Cu-Li alloys like matrix is discussed extensively. The structural characterization techniques addressed include: scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), optical microscopy (OM), differential thermal analysis (DTA), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). Mechanical testing including hardness, elastic modulus, tension tests, and impact tests were used in the characterization of composites. Theoretical models for prediction of some mechanical properties are included too.

Download or read book Corrosion Behavior of Metal Matrix Composites written by R. C. Paciej and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal-matrix composites suffer from preferential corrosion because of their non-homogeneous composition and structure. In particular, aluminum alloy matrix materials are very susceptible to corrosion, when the dispersoid is a noble phase, such as SiC. This paper describes the pros and cons of what inadequate processing and fabrication can do to corrosion behavior of the composites. Keywords: Metal matrix composites; Aluminum silicon carbide; Extrusion; Preferential corrosion; Solution heat treatment; Polarization; Metallurgy.

Book Synopsis Aluminium Alloys and Composites by : Kavian Cooke
Download or read book Aluminium Alloys and Composites written by Kavian Cooke and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-03-04 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aluminium (Al) is a metal of great importance because of its excellent corrosion resistance, high electrical and thermal conductivity, good reflectivity, and very good recycling characteristics. The properties of heat-treatable Al-alloys can be further enhanced by the inclusion of a reinforcing phase that increases the mechanical properties of the overall composite. This book is a comprehensive guide on the different types of aluminum alloys and the new advances that have been made in developing and manufacturing aluminum alloys and composites. This text provides a comprehensive overview of the processing, formability, and chemical composition of aluminum alloys and composites. Part One is focused on evaluating the types and properties of advanced aluminum alloys and composites, while Part Two explores characterization. The advantage of this book is that it provides a detailed review of major advances that have occurred in the development and application of aluminum alloys and composites while outlining a development strategy for these materials.
Book Synopsis Characterization of Corrosion on Outdoor-Exposed Aluminum Metal-Matrix Composites as a Function of Reinforcement Specie and Volume Fraction by :
Download or read book Characterization of Corrosion on Outdoor-Exposed Aluminum Metal-Matrix Composites as a Function of Reinforcement Specie and Volume Fraction written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hawaii Corrosion Laboratory and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory collaborated to prepare, environmentally expose for up to 2 years, and evaluate multivariant sets of metal matrix composites (MMCs). The experimental matrix involved variations in particulate volume-percent and particulate reinforcement specie (higher purity green and less-pure black silicon carbide, boron carbide, and alumina). The specific objective of this study was to determine, mainly using x-ray powder diffractometry, how observed gravimetric variations in corrosion behavior of these sets of MMCs (differentiated by four kinds of reinforcing agents with some variations in volume-percent), after relatively heavy-rainfall outdoor exposures in Hawaii, could be related to the crystallographic and morphological characteristics of the resulting corrosion products. Compared to the monolithic aluminum control specimens, the measured corrosion rates for these MMCs were considerably accelerated (by at least an order of magnitude) by the presence and relative amount of these second-phase particulates. The increased kinetics found for these MMCs were nominally proportional to the volume fraction of the particulate phase. Other differentials in gravimetric corrosion rates and corrosion product characteristics were related to the type of reinforcement phase present.
