Download or read book Goethe in English written by Derek Glass and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2005 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography was commissioned by the English Goethe Society as a contribution to the celebration in 1999 of the 250th anniversary of Goethes birth. It sets out to record translations of his works into English that have been published in the twentieth century, up to and including material published in that anniversary year. It aims to serve as wide a constituency as possible, be it as a simple reference tool for tracing a translation of a given work or as a documentary source for specialized studies of Goethe reception in the English-speaking world. The work records publications during the century, not merely translations that originated during this period. It includes numerous reprintings of older material, as well as some belated first publications of translations from the nineteenth century. It shows how frequent and how long enduring was the recourse of publishers and anthologists to a Goethe Victorian in diction, a signal factor in perceptions and misperceptions. Derek Glass was putting the finishing touches to the bibliography at the time of his sudden death in March 2004. Colleagues at Kings College London have edited the final manuscript, which is now published jointly by the English Goethe Society and the Modern Humanities Research Association both as a worthy commemoration of Goethes anniversary and as a tribute to Derek himself.

Book Synopsis The Palgrave Handbook of German Idealism and Feminist Philosophy by : Susanne Lettow
Download or read book The Palgrave Handbook of German Idealism and Feminist Philosophy written by Susanne Lettow and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-04 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a comprehensive overview of the ways in which the relation between German Idealism and feminist philosophy has been explored. It demonstrates the significance of German Idealism for feminist philosophy, and simultaneously brings out the relevance of feminist readings and interpretations for a critical understanding of German Idealism. Key Features: • Presents original work on the German Idealists and considers their legacy within feminist thought from different philosophical perspectives. • Incorporates perspectives from queer theory, new materialism and critical philosophy of race, and so explores German Idealism through the subversion and transformation of meanings and conceptual arrangements. • Challenges the epistemic boundaries of philosophy by engaging the thought of women contemporary with the German Idealists such as Bettina von Arnim and Karoline von Günderrode. • Places the work of the German Idealists on gender, sexuality, marriage and family within the wider contexts of colonialism and European nation building. • Considers how several key concepts of German Idealism (such as subject, reason, enlightenment, autonomy and the sublime) have been central targets of feminist theory. • Includes a Black feminist critique of Kantian universalism. Fully reflecting the diversity that characterizes feminist thinking today, The Palgrave Handbook of German Idealism and Feminist Philosophy is essential reading for scholars and graduate students of German idealism, feminist philosophy and feminist theory. This book was released on 2013-11-17 with total page 5551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely regarded as the greatest German literary figure of the modern era, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was a prolific author of novels, epic and lyric poetry, prose, plays, scientific treatises and autobiography. A literary celebrity by the age of 25, Goethe achieved enormous success with his first novel, ‘The Sorrows of Young Werther’. Inspiring the imagination of a generation, it was the first novel of the Sturm und Drang movement, which exalted nature, feeling, and human individualism, seeking to overthrow Rationalism. ‘Faust’, Goethe’s two-part dramatic masterpiece, is regarded as the supreme work of his later years and is often cited as Germany’s greatest contribution to world literature. Based on the traditional theme of the eponymous scholar making a pact with the demon Mephistopheles, the drama explores themes that encapsulate the fullest expression of the European Romantic movement, to which Goethe was an early and major contributor. Book Synopsis Goethe’s Path to Creativity by : Rainer Holm-Hadulla
Download or read book Goethe’s Path to Creativity written by Rainer Holm-Hadulla and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goethe’s Path to Creativity provides a comprehensive psycho-biography of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, a giant of modern German and European literary, political, and scientific history. The book brings this influential work by Rainer Matthias Holm-Hadulla to the English language for the first time in a newly elaborated edition. Goethe’s path to creativity was difficult and beset by a multitude of crises, beginning with his birth, which was so difficult that he was initially not thought to have survived it, and ending with an infatuation that left him, at the age of 74, toying with the same kind of suicidal thoughts he had entertained as a 20-year-old. Throughout his long life, he suffered bitter disappointments and was subject to severe mood swings. Despite being a gifted child, a widely recognized poet, and an influential scientist and politician, he spent his entire life loving and suffering; nonetheless, he had the exceptional ability to endure emotional pain and to transform his sufferings creatively. The way in which he mined his passions for creative impulses continues to inspire modern readers. Readers can apply the lessons they have learned from his life and use Goethe’s strategies for their own creative art of living. Goethe’s Path to Creativity: A Psycho-Biography of the Eminent Politician, Scientist and Poet will be of great interest to all engaged in the fields of creativity, literature, psychoanalysis, psychology, psychotherapy, and personal growth.
