Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India, Bharat and Pakistan, the second book of the Bharat Trilogy, takes the discussion forward from its bestselling predecessor, India That Is Bharat. It explores the combined influence of European and Middle Eastern colonialities on Bharat as the successor state to the Indic civilisation, and on the origins of the Indian Constitution. To this end, the book traces the thought continuum of Middle Eastern coloniality, from the rise of Islamic Revivalism in the 1740s following the decline of the Mughal Empire, which presaged the idea of Pakistan, until the end of the Khilafat Movement in 1924, which cemented the road to Pakistan. The book also describes the collaboration of convenience that was forged between the proponents of Middle Eastern coloniality and the British colonial establishment to the detriment of the Indic civilisation. One of the objectives of this book is to help the reader draw parallels between the challenges faced by the Indic civilisation in the tumultuous period from 1740 to 1924, and the present day. Its larger goal remains the same as that of the first, which is to enthuse Bharatiyas to undertake a critical decolonial study of Bharat's history, especially in the context of the Constitution, so that the religiosity towards the document is moderated by a sense of proportion, perspective and purpose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1894, equipped with a set of anthropometric instruments obtained on loan from the Asiatic Society of Bengal, I commenced an investigation of the tribes of the Nīlgiri hills, the Todas, Kotas, and Badagas, bringing down on myself the unofficial criticism that “anthropological research at high altitudes is eminently indicated when the thermometer registers 100° in Madras.” From this modest beginning have resulted:—(1) investigation of various classes which inhabit the city of Madras; (2) periodical tours to various parts of the Madras Presidency, with a view to the study of the more important tribes and classes; (3) the publication of Bulletins, wherein the results of my work are embodied; (4) the establishment of an anthropological laboratory; (5) a collection of photographs of Native types; (6) a series of lantern slides for lecture purposes; (7) a collection of phonograph records of tribal songs and music. The scheme for a systematic and detailed ethnographic survey of the whole of India received the formal sanction of the Government of India in 1901. A Superintendent of Ethnography was appointed for each Presidency or Province, to carry out the work of the survey in addition to his other duties. The other duty, in my particular case—the direction of a large local museum—happily made an excellent blend with the survey operations, as the work of collection for the ethnological section went on simultaneously with that of investigation. The survey was financed for a period of five (afterwards extended to eight) years, and an annual allotment of Rs. 5,000 provided for each Presidency and Province. This included Rs. 2,000 for approved notes on monographs, and replies to the stereotyped series of questions. The replies to these questions were not, I am bound to admit, always entirely satisfactory, as they broke down both in accuracy and detail. I may, as an illustration, cite the following description of making fire by friction. “They know how to make fire, i.e., by friction of wood as well as stone, etc. They take a triangular cut of stone, and one flat oblong size flat. They hit one another with the maintenance of cocoanut fibre or copper, then fire sets immediately, and also by rubbing the two barks frequently with each other they make fire.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did resistance to colonialism form a source of alternative modernity in India? Why did the process fail to strike roots? Building upon four decades of serious research, this unique collection discusses different forms of resistance to colonialism and their role in the formation ofalternative modernity. It also provides an engaging account of the development of political and cultural consciousness in the subcontinent. Investigating three areas of resistance - armed uprising, intellectual dissent, and cultural protest - K.N. Panikkar argues that these were informed by a vision of a condition beyond colonialism in which tradition and modernity selectively, but creatively, came together. This had manifestations inseveral fields of cultural and intellectual concern - social ideas, cultural practices, scientific enquiries, and literary and artistic creativity. According to the author a creative dialogue between tradition and modernity was crowded out of public space by the dual pressures of revivalism and colonial modernity. The void thus created was filled either by the culture of the capitalist west intially provided by colonial modernity or by theobscurantism of tradition, currently being elaborated and advocated by Hindutva. The failure of alternative modernity has also led to an uncritical acceptance of globalization and sympathetic response to cultural revivalism. Based on a variety of sources, in both English and regional languages, thisvolume provides a new interpretation of the intellectual and cultural history of colonial India.
