Book Synopsis Slavery and the Meetinghouse by : Ryan P. Jordan
Download or read book Slavery and the Meetinghouse written by Ryan P. Jordan and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2007-03-28 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ryan P. Jordan explores the limits of religious dissent in antebellum America, and reminds us of the difficulties facing reformers who tried peacefully to end slavery. In the years before the Civil War, the Society of Friends opposed the abolitionist campaign for an immediate end to slavery and considered abolitionists within the church as heterodox radicals seeking to destroy civil and religious liberty. In response, many Quaker abolitionists began to build "comeouter" institutions where social and legal inequalities could be freely discussed, and where church members could fuse religious worship with social activism. The conflict between the Quakers and the Abolitionists highlights the dilemma of liberal religion within a slaveholding republic.

Book Synopsis Apostles of Equality by : D. Laurence Rogers
Download or read book Apostles of Equality written by D. Laurence Rogers and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2011-10-31 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first biographical account of the life of James Gillespie Birney in more than fifty years, this fabulously insightful history illuminates and elevates an all-but-forgotten figure whose political career contributed mightily to the American political fabric. Birney was a southern-born politician at the heart of the antislavery movement, with two southern-born sons who were major generals involved in key Union Army activities, including the leadership of the black troops. The interaction of the Birneys with historical figures (Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Henry Clay) highlights the significance of the family’s activities in politics and war. D. Laurence Rogers offers a unique historiography of the abolition movement, the Civil War, and Reconstruction through the experiences of one family navigating momentous developments from the founding of the Republic until the late 19th century.

Book Synopsis Religion, Race, and the Making of Confederate Kentucky, 1830–1880 by : Luke E. Harlow
Download or read book Religion, Race, and the Making of Confederate Kentucky, 1830–1880 written by Luke E. Harlow and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-21 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds new light on the role of religion in the nineteenth-century slavery debates. Luke E. Harlow argues that the ongoing conflict over the meaning of Christian 'orthodoxy' constrained the political and cultural horizons available for defenders and opponents of American slavery. The central locus of these debates was Kentucky, a border slave state with a long-standing antislavery presence. Although white Kentuckians famously cast themselves as moderates in the period and remained with the Union during the Civil War, their religious values showed no moderation on the slavery question. When the war ultimately brought emancipation, white Kentuckians found themselves in lockstep with the rest of the Confederate South. Racist religion thus paved the way for the making of Kentucky's Confederate memory of the war, as well as a deeply entrenched white Democratic Party in the state.
