Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Preface states, this book is a result of a research project for the History Department of the University of the West Indies. It is a work which sought to examine the way in which the slave policy of the British government was implemented in a new slave colony. Faced with recalcitrance on the part of the older West Indian colonies, the Colonial Office did not accord Trinidad an independent legislature because it felt it could more easily implement its slave policy. Trinidad proved to be no more compliant than the other colonies, and logistically was not easy to supervise. No study has previously been done of the slave process in Trinidad. A statistical analysis of the registration was undertaken by A. Meredith John in 1988. The present study is important because it has focussed on an area that needed to be examined, and one which illustrates that one cannot generalise on the West Indies. It shows how easily a policy can fail, if administrators are not in sync - as those in London were not during this seminal period. The baneful effects of the British experiments extended to persons like the free coloured and black people, who were on the periphery of the system, but who were materially affected by it. This book is significant because it fills a gap in knowledge about an important aspect of the island's history. It also affords an opportunity to look at the attempt to make changes in a society that, for the most part, was not English. As such it stands as a warning of the need to understand the cultures of those for whom systems are devised before they are imposed.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Official Letter From the Commissioners of Correspondence, of the Bahama Islands, to George Chalmers, Esq.: Colonial Agent; Concerning the Proposed Abolition of Slavery in the West Indies To await the maturity of time and of circumstance ab solutely necessary to convert slavery into freedom, and by the only means which can effect that change, with safety to the public weal, and justice to the owners, or real be nefit to the slaves, but ill suits the impatience of our abo litionists, now for the first time openly avowed. And because no hope can reasonably be indulged, that the colo nies themselves will adopt any very hasty measures on the subject, Parliament and the nation are vehemently called upon to interfere in a manner equally unconstitutional and unjust, and in palpable violation of the good faith of the country, and the repeated pledges, not only of government, but of the very party itself which has now at length une masked its last battery upon the falling fortunes of the colonies. The abolitionists, indeed, affect to speak of us, as if the work of emancipation had never yet been begun in the British West Indies: when in fact, it has not only had a beginning, but already made a degree of progress in most of the colonies, as we believe, and certainly in this one, almost beyond those limits, within which a cautious policy might have fairly restrained them. It is well known that all the islands abound in free blacks and people of colour that is, slaves or the descendants of slaves manua. This book was released on 2014-02-07 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his influential and widely debated Capitalism and Slavery, Eric Williams examined the relation of capitalism and slavery in the British West Indies. Binding an economic view of history with strong moral argument, his study of the role of slavery in financing the Industrial Revolution refuted traditional ideas of economic and moral progress and firmly established the centrality of the African slave trade in European economic development. He also showed that mature industrial capitalism in turn helped destroy the slave system. Establishing the exploitation of commercial capitalism and its link to racial attitudes, Williams employed a historicist vision that has set the tone for an entire field. Williams’s profound critique became the foundation for studies of imperialism and economic development and has been widely debated since the book’s initial publication in 1944. The Economic Aspect of the Abolition of the West Indian Slave Trade and Slavery now makes available in book form for the first time his dissertation, on which Capitalism and Slavery was based. The significant differences between his two works allow us to rethink questions that were considered resolved and to develop fresh problems and hypotheses. It offers the possibility of a much deeper reconsideration of issues that have lost none of their urgency—indeed, whose importance has increased.
