This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 913 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is part of the definitive edition of letters written by and to Charles Darwin, the most celebrated naturalist of the nineteenth century. Notes and appendixes put these fascinating and wide-ranging letters in context, making the letters accessible to both scholars and general readers. Darwin depended on correspondence to collect data from all over the world, and to discuss his emerging ideas with scientific colleagues, many of whom he never met in person. The letters are published chronologically: volume 24 includes letters from 1876, the year in which Darwin published Cross and Self Fertilisation in the Vegetable Kingdom, and started writing Forms of Flowers. In 1876, Darwin's daughter-in-law, Amy, died shortly after giving birth to a son, Bernard Darwin, an event that devastated the family. The volume includes a supplement of 182 letters from earlier years, including a newly discovered collection of letters from William Darwin, Darwin's eldest son.

Book Synopsis Freedom National: The Destruction of Slavery in the United States, 1861-1865 by : James Oakes

This book was released on 2012-12-10 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Lincoln Prize "Oakes brilliantly succeeds in [clarifying] the aims of the war with a wholly new perspective." —David Brion Davis, New York Review of Books Freedom National is a groundbreaking history of emancipation that joins the political initiatives of Lincoln and the Republicans in Congress with the courageous actions of Union soldiers and runaway slaves in the South. It shatters the widespread conviction that the Civil War was first and foremost a war to restore the Union and only gradually, when it became a military necessity, a war to end slavery. These two aims—"Liberty and Union, one and inseparable"—were intertwined in Republican policy from the very start of the war. By summer 1861 the federal government invoked military authority to begin freeing slaves, immediately and without slaveholder compensation, as they fled to Union lines in the disloyal South. In the loyal Border States the Republicans tried coaxing officials into gradual abolition with promises of compensation and the colonization abroad of freed blacks. James Oakes shows that Lincoln’s landmark 1863 proclamation marked neither the beginning nor the end of emancipation: it triggered a more aggressive phase of military emancipation, sending Union soldiers onto plantations to entice slaves away and enlist the men in the army. But slavery proved deeply entrenched, with slaveholders determined to re-enslave freedmen left behind the shifting Union lines. Lincoln feared that the war could end in Union victory with slavery still intact. The Thirteenth Amendment that so succinctly abolished slavery was no formality: it was the final act in a saga of immense war, social upheaval, and determined political leadership. Fresh and compelling, this magisterial history offers a new understanding of the death of slavery and the rebirth of a nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book Synopsis Queen's University, Volume III, 1961-2004 by : Duncan McDowall
Download or read book Queen's University, Volume III, 1961-2004 written by Duncan McDowall and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in 1841 by a royal charter, Queen’s University evolved into a national institution steeped in tradition and an abiding sense of public service. Propelled initially by its Presbyterian instincts and an attachment to Gaelic culture, Queen’s has prospered and adapted over the years to match Canada’s ever-changing dynamics. In this third volume of Queen’s University’s official history, Duncan McDowall demonstrates that the late twentieth century was a contest between expediency and tradition waged through crisis and careful evolution. Testing Tradition calibrates the durability of Queen’s vaunted traditions in the face of shifts in the broader Canadian society. During this time of massive postsecondary expansion, Queen’s grew sevenfold from a small, collegial campus of 3,100 students to a sprawling cosmopolitan place of more than 20,000 students from over 120 countries engaged in undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. Measuring Queen’s University’s responses to concerns over social diversity, human rights, and gender equity through the eyes of its trustees, administrators, students, faculty, and the Kingston community, this volume pays particular attention to the experiences of women and visible minorities at the university. Copiously illustrated with photographs of important people, events, and aspects of campus life, this volume shows how Queen’s, in having its traditions tested, has worked to retain the best of its past, while accepting the inevitability of change.
