Book excerpt: The critical current density of high-{Tc} superconducting thin films is found to be sensitive to the presence of flux-pinning defects, and particularly to the existence of grain boundaries which may act either as pinning centers for the vortices or as weak link junctions. Atomic resolution Z-contrast imaging and spatially resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy provide a method to obtain a direct image of the atomic grain boundary structure for correlation with its electronic structure. Using a combination of transport measurements and electron microscopy, the authors have begun to correlate superconducting properties with atomic scale grain boundary structure using YBCO thin films deposited on SrTiO3 bicrystals and on Ni substrates (RABiTS).

Book excerpt: Developing an atomic scale study of the structure-property relationships of grain boundaries in high-{Tc} superconductors is essential to understand their current dissipation mechanism and for incorporating these materials into viable devices. Thin YBa2Cu3O{sub 7-{delta}} films have been deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on SrTiO3 symmetric bicrystals. Transport measurements in a magnetic field have been conducted across the grain boundaries through a wide bridge. The data obtained are consistent with microstructural observation in a VG Microscopes HB603 U and a VG HB501 UX dedicated STEM. Of particular interest in the study of high-{Tc} materials is the use of EELS, which can highlight the presence of non-superconducting regions through interpretation of the onset positions and fine-structure (ELNES) of characteristic core-edge features. This preliminary investigation has shown that the study of the grain boundary electronic microstructure in parallel with transport properties study should lead to a better understanding of the transport properties of the superconducting materials. In particular, it has been shown that transport measurements are consistent with a model where the grain boundaries are composed of weak links separated by a very small fraction of much strong links although more boundaries need to be studied to draw definitive conclusions and determine the real nature of these strong links.

Book excerpt: The International Symposium on Superconductivity, which has been held annu ally since 1988, is a forum for presenting the most up-to-date information about a broad range of research and development in superconductivity, from funda mental aspects to applications. More than 10 years have passed since the discovery of oxide superconductors and since various developments of applications began. It may be said that the prospects for application of oxide superconductors recently have opened up. Great progress has been made toward practical use, for example, of the flywheel, which uses bulk materials, and the high-performance cryo-cooled magnet made of bismuth wire. These were the results of persistent efforts to develop materials from the viewpoint of materials science and engineering. Also important is the progress in comprehensive understanding of high temperature superconductivity. Unique electronic properties of cuprates such as the non-Fermi liquid normal state, spin-charge separation, spin gap, and d-wave symmetry were discussed at the symposium, as were the unique electromagnetic properties resulting from the low dimensionality of cuprates. In the field of new superconductors, many exotic materials have been discovered since 1986. A decade of work with cuprate superconductors is reviewed in this proceedings, and several of the newest materials are presented. These papers will be instructive for many researchers and for students who are to enter this field.

Book excerpt: The phenomena of superconductivity has enormous industrial potential, but the penetration of superconductor-based products has, thus far, been slow. An indisputable fact is that there are prizes, and profits, for the teams that solve the critical problems in understanding and processing these complex materials. The continuous processing of superconducting tapes and wires is a necessary stage that will open up the industrial market to the designers of a diverse range of time and energy saving devices, particularly in ultra-fast computing and lossless power transmission. The aim of the research reported herein was to investigate the fabrication of superconducting tapes and films via two different processes, namely: the established PIT technique, and a less well known electrochemical route. The PIT research yielded partially textured (a characteristic not found in previously reported thallium-based PIT tapes) and high purity tapes with promising transport properties. The main subject of this work is the electrodeposition of superconducting films with particular emphasis on the optimisation of the deposition process, as opposed to the optimisation of the post-deposition heat treatment. This is not a well researched area. Therefore the research herein deals with the mechanisms of the deposition process in order to achieve a high standard of reproducibility in producing a variety of superconductor precursor films. The heat-treatment of the as-deposited films was determined, and results are presented concerning the characteristics of the resulting superconducting films. An attempt was made to fabricate, for the first time via electrodeposition, (Tl, Pb)-1223 films. Superconductivity was successfully observed in both Bismuth- and Thallium-based films. Extensive further work is required, but the impact upon society from superconducting devices draws ever nearer.

Book excerpt: The electric transport of high-temperature superconductors, such as YBa2Cu3O{sub 7-x} (YBCO), can be strongly restricted by the presence of high-angle grain boundaries (GB). This weak-link behavior is governed by the macroscopic GB geometry and the microscopic grain boundary structure and composition at the atomic level. Whereas grain boundaries present a considerable impediment to high current applications of high T{sub c} materials, there is considerable commercial interest in exploiting the weak-link-nature of grain boundaries for the design of microelectronic devices, such as superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs). The Josephson junctions which form the basis of this technology can also be formed by introducing artificial barriers into the superconductor. The authors have examined both types of Josephson junctions by EM techniques in an effort to understand the connection between microstructure/chemistry and electrical transport properties. This knowledge is a valuable resource for the design and production of improved devices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of high-temperature superconductivity has encouraged an inter disciplinary approach to research. It has required significant cooperation and collaboration among researchers, each of whom has brought to it a rich variety of experience from many other fields. Recently, great improvements have been made in the quality of research. The subject has matured and been launched into the next stage through the resonance between science and technology. The current progress of materials processing and engineering in this field is analogous to that previously seen in the development of semiconductors. These include the appearance of materials taking the place of YBa2Cu307 owing to their improved properties (higher critical temperatures and stronger flux pin ning) in which rare earth ions with large radii (La, Nd, Sm) substitute for Y; the development of technology enabling growth control on the nanometer scale; and precise and reproducible measurements that can be used as rigorous tests of theoretical models, which in turn are expected to lead to the develop ment of new devices. For further progress in high-T research, academics and c technologists must pool their knowledge and experience. I hope that this volume will promote that goal by providing the reader with the latest results of high-temperature superconductor research and will stimulate further discussion and collaboration.
