Nous avons donc posé l'hypothèse suivante : l'attention visuelle joue un rôle dans la constitution du lexique orthographique. Comme ces chercheurs, nous nous sommes basés sur le modèle de lecture et d'écriture à deux voies de Morton (1980). Nous avons sélectionné deux groupes différents dans leurs performances en attention visuelle, et ils ont passé des épreuves de lecture et d'orthographe lexicale. Nous avons comparé leurs résultats et il semblerait qu'une bonne attention visuelle favoriserait l'emploi de la voie d'adressage et donc faciliterait l'élaboration du lexique orthographique. Ceci a pour conséquence la nécessité d'évaluer l'attention visuelle dans tout bilan de langage écrit, et d'avoir une prise en charge adaptée si des troubles sont constatés. De là, des stratégies améliorant la prise d'informations dans les mots pourront être développées pour permettre la constitution du lexique orthographique.

Book excerpt: De nombreuses recherches récentes concernant le langage écrit se sont interessé à une composante métalinguistique jusqu'alors peu étudiée : la conscience morphologique. Celle ci peut se définir comme la capacité à prendre conscience que les mots sont constitués d'unités significatives, appelées morphèmes, et à manipuler ces unités. Les morphèmes peuvent être soit lexicaux soit grammaticaux. Différents auteurs ont mis en évidence une corrélation significative entre le développement de la conscience morphologique à l'oral et l'acquisition du langage écrit. D'autres travaux ont confirmé le lien entre des habiletés métamorphologiques faibles et des performances en lecture et en orthographe déficitaires chez des enfants présentant une dyslexie phonologique. De plus, des études récentes ont monté que des enfants dysorthographiques avaient progressé en orthographe grâce à un entraînement oral régulier de la conscience morphologique, avec un support écrit. Les diverses recherches portant essentiellement sur des enfants d'école primaire, nous avons voulu savoir si la conscience morphologique continuait à agir sur l'orthographe à l'adolescence, c'est à dire la période d'apprentissage du langage écrit. Nous avons donc proposé à 48 élèves de 4ème un protocole d'évaluation de la conscience morphologique que nous avons élaboré, ainsi qu'une épreuve d'orthographe lexicale et une dictée de texte visant à évaluer l'orthographe grammaticale. Les résultats objectivent une corrélation significative entre la conscience morphologique et les performances orthographiques des collégiens. Les coefficients de corrélation sont toutefois moins élevés que chez les enfants plus jeunes (0.266 pour l'orthographe lexicale, 0,393 pour l'orthographe grammaticale). Par ailleurs, une épreuve de conscience phonologique nous a permis de vérifier que l'orthographe est liée aux habiletés métamorphologiques indépendamment des capacités métaphonologiques. Notre étude confirme l'intérêt d'une réflexion sur la morphologie dans la prise en charge des enfants et adolescents dysorthographiques.

Book excerpt: A ce jour, la plupart des études s'accordent sur le rôle essentiel des compétences phonologiques dans l'acquisition de la lecture et de l'orthographe d'usage. Cependant, certains enfants présentant de bonnes compétences phonologiques, rencontrent des difficultés à construire un stock lexical orthographique. A ce sujet, le modèle ACV98 postule l'implication d'un empan visuo attentionnel dans l'acquisition de l'orthographe d'usage. Ainsi nous voulions montrer que les capacités d'apprentissage des nouveaux mots sont d'autant meilleures que l'empan visuo-attentionnel est plus large chez ces enfants, et inversement, indépendamment des aptitudes phono logiques des dyslexiques. Afin de mener notre recherche, nous avons repris le matériel de l'étude de Bosse (2006) elle même inspirée des travaux de Share sur l'auto apprentissage. Six textes courts contenant chacun un pseudo mot présenté plusieurs fois ont été proposés à 38 enfants dyslexiques de 8 à 12 ans. Ceux-ci devaient les restituer sept jours après selon trois modalités de rappel: un rappel libre, un rappel sous dictée et une tâche de décision orthographique. Parallèlement, nous avons évalué les compétences phono logiques, visuo-attentionnelles et orthographiques de chaque enfant. Le lien supposé entre empan visuo-attentionnel et performances orthographiques chez les enfants dyslexiques semble se vérifier ici, la corrélation entre les scores étant cependant davantage significative pour le seuil de lettre que pour les autres épreuves visuoattentionnelles. Enfin, les deux groupes d'enfants ayant respectivement des performances phono logiques et visuo-attentionnelles faibles ont obtenu des résultats équivalents et déficitaires en apprentissage de mots nouveaux et en orthographe. Les compétences phonologiques et l'empan visuo-attentionnel semblent bien donc contribuer, indépendamment, à l'apprentissage de mots nouveaux.

D'une part, l'enrichissement du lexique orthographique pourrait constituer la base de la remédiation des différents sous-types de dyslexies car les compétences orthographiques de l'apprenti-scripteur dépendraient essentiellement de la constitution des connaissances lexicales spécifiques (CLOS) ; la capacité à orthographier de nouveaux mots serait alors possible par activation du réseau structuré à partir de la base déjà acquise. D'autre part, on vise le contournement du traitement phonologique ; en effet, on observe avec l'augmentation du niveau scolaire une évolution des traitements: une diminution des contributions phono logiques à partir du CE1 en même temps qu'une augmentation de la contribution des connaissances métamorphologiques et surtout des capacités visuo-attentionnelles. Ces dernières conditionnent l'image mentale du mot ainsi que le traitement simultané de toutes les lettres du mot. Le but étant de permettre à l'enfant d'être plus disponible pour gérer des tâches cognitives complexes comme gérer l'orthographe grammaticale et l'accès au sens.

Most current information processing models of reading distinguish between two alternative procedures for the pronunciation of a printed word. The difference between these concerns the level at which orthography is translated to phonology in one, the word-level procedure, a word is read aloud with reference to knowledge specific to that whole word. In the other, the sub-word-level procedure, a printed word is pronounced with reference to knowledge about smaller segments which occur in many different words. Both procedures contribute to normal skilled reading and its acquisition. But if one of the procedures is disrupted, then oral reading will be forced to rely on the alternative routine. Surface dyslexia is a general label for any disorder of reading which results from inadequate functioning of the word-level procedure and in consequence abnormal reliance on sub-word level translation from orthography to phonology. Originally published in 1985, this book provides new evidence about the diverse manifestations of surface dyslexia in adult neurological patients and in children with developmental disorders of reading. The data are drawn from speakers of a range of languages with distinct orthographies. Process models for the pronunciation of print are elaborated, and an appendix gives neurological information on the patients reported.
