Book excerpt: Empirical findings supporting the connection between religion and spirituality and health have been consistently found in the literature, whereas the factors explaining this relationship have lacked clarity. The present study sought to explore this relationship and establish health behavior, mental health, and social support as mediating factors to the proposed association between religious commitment and physical health. Physical health was measured by a number of indicators: body mass index, self-reported medical conditions, prescription drug use, over-the-counter medication usage, and problem use of drugs and alcohol. A sample of 150 college students from a university in Central Virginia participated in this study. The initial hypothesis was that there would be a positive correlation between religious commitment and each potential mediator: health behavior, mental health, and social support. The second hypothesis proposed that religious commitment and physical health would be correlated. The third hypothesis posits that health behavior; mental health; and social support would be correlated with physical health; thereby, establishing them as mediators. The results of this study confirmed that health behavior was related to religious commitment; however, the remaining two proposed mediators were not found to have significant relationships with religious commitment. While health behavior was correlated to religious commitment, physical health was not found to be significantly related to religious commitment. These findings did not satisfy the conditions deemed for mediation; therefore, it was unable to prove that health behavior, mental health, and social support mediate the relationship between religion/spirituality and health, as hypothesized. Further implications of these findings are discussed.

Book excerpt: Many college students frequently engage in two behaviors -- sexual activity and alcohol use -- that can potentially lead to significant negative consequences, such as contracting a sexually transmitted infection or personal injury, respectively. College students also tend to be a population with strong religious beliefs and regular engagement in religious behaviors. Some research indicates that more frequent engagement in religious behavior is associated with less risky behavior (e.g., initiation of sex, fewer sexual partners, decreased alcohol use) among college students. However, previous research is mixed on why this association exists. The current study explored "relationship with God" as a religious construct that potentially mediates the relationship between religious behaviors and alcohol and sexual risk behaviors (lifetime and last 3 months). The sample consisted of 406 University of Missouri-Kansas City students. Data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics Version 19 and AMOS Version 18. Findings indicated participants' increased engagement in religious behaviors was significantly associated with stronger beliefs that God influenced their alcohol use decision-making, which was in turn, associated with less alcohol use in the last three months. This finding suggested that God control beliefs partially mediated the protective relationship between religious behaviors and recent alcohol use. There were no significant relationships between relationship with God variables and lifetime alcohol use and lifetime or recent sexual risk. Future research should continue to explore this area with larger samples that allow for sex and race/ethnicity comparisons regarding relationship with God and risk behavior. Interventions for reducing college students' alcohol use may consider incorporating messages that discuss God control beliefs.

Some research suggests that new stressors during the transition to college may place young adults at increased risk of depressive disorders. In addition, depression in college students has been linked to a variety of risky behaviors such as alcohol use and risky sexual activity. Fortunately, research suggests that religiosity may act as a buffer and lead to lower levels of depressive symptoms and risky behavior. Current research has not adequately examined the relationship between religiosity, depression, and risky behavior among college students. In this study, depressive symptoms were measured using the 20-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale, while risky behaviors were measured using the section on risky sexual behavior from the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance survey and the section on alcohol consumption from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey, both developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Four questions frequently used in literature to measure critical behaviors and attitudes were used to assess participants' religiosity. It was predicted that engagement in risky behaviors would be associated with higher levels of depressive symptoms while increased religiosity would be associated with lower levels. Additionally, increased religiosity would be associated with lower levels of engagement in risky behavior. Multiple regression analyses revealed that risky behavior were not significantly associated with higher depressive symptoms, while higher church attendance was associated with lower depressive symptoms. Although not considered a risky behavior, ever being forced to have sex was associated with higher depressive symptoms. Linear regression analyses revealed that increased religiosity was associated with increased engagement in risky behavior. These findings suggest that while depressive symptoms and risky behaviors are prevalent among college students, religiosity may act as a buffer and lead to lower levels of depression and risky behavior. Limitations, implications, and future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Stressful life events are correlated with a higher likelihood of engaging in maladaptive coping techniques (Boden et al., 2014; Kohn, Lafreniere, & Gurevich, 1990; Park, Armell, & Tennen, 2004). One type of maladaptive coping technique is engagement in risky behaviors (e.g., high-risk sports, risky sexual behaviors, illicit drug use; Fromme, Katz, & Rivet, 1997). College students are at an increased risk of engaging in these behaviors. Research demonstrates that stressful life events are also correlated with higher levels of depression and anxiety (Kohn, Lafreniere, & Gurevich, 1990). As college students are exposed to a more stressful environment, they are at an increased risk for developing symptoms of depression and anxiety compared to emerging adults not enrolled in college. There is limited research on what may moderate the relationship between stressful life events and engaging in risky behaviors and the relationship between stressful life events and emotional distress indices, (i.e., depression and anxiety). Utilizing adaptive coping techniques may decrease the likelihood of engaging in risky behaviors and experiencing depression and anxiety for someone experiencing stress. The objective of the current study was to examine the role of spirituality as a potential moderator between stressful life events and willingness to engage in risky behavior and emotional distress indices. We hypothesized a positive correlation between stressful life events and willingness to engage in risky behaviors, symptoms of depression, and symptoms of anxiety. We also hypothesized a negative correlation between spirituality and willingness to engage in risky behaviors, symptoms of depression, and symptoms of anxiety. Spirituality was hypothesized to serve as a moderator in the relationships between stressful life events and risky behaviors and depression and anxiety. Participants who report higher levels of stressful life events and higher levels of spirituality were predicted to report decreased risky behaviors and depression and anxiety symptoms, compared to those who report a higher levels of stressful life events and lower level of spirituality. Results of this study supported the first and second hypotheses; significant correlations were found in the expected directions. However, spirituality was not a significant moderator in these relationships in this study.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: I propose a framework for understanding religiosity and risk behavior (Religiosity and Risk Behavior Model) that specifies a variety of upstream features of religiosity (prescriptions for behavior, peer/adults models, decreased opportunity, and coping strategies) and downstream features of religiosity (risk related cognitions, risk perceptions, decreased behavioral willingness) that are responsible for lower rates of risky behavior among religious adolescents. Undergraduates (N = 272) completed an online questionnaire that measured religiosity, illicit drug use, and the upstream and downstream features of religiosity. Analysis using structural equation modeling generally supported our theoretical model. Religious adolescents were less likely to report using illicit drugs and the link between religiosity and drug use was mediated through paths specified in our model.
