Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph surveys the theory of quantitative homogenization for second-order linear elliptic systems in divergence form with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients in a bounded domain. It begins with a review of the classical qualitative homogenization theory, and addresses the problem of convergence rates of solutions. The main body of the monograph investigates various interior and boundary regularity estimates that are uniform in the small parameter e>0. Additional topics include convergence rates for Dirichlet eigenvalues and asymptotic expansions of fundamental solutions, Green functions, and Neumann functions. The monograph is intended for advanced graduate students and researchers in the general areas of analysis and partial differential equations. It provides the reader with a clear and concise exposition of an important and currently active area of quantitative homogenization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this monograph is to describe the main concepts and recent - vances in multiscale ?nite element methods. This monograph is intended for thebroaderaudienceincludingengineers, appliedscientists, andforthosewho are interested in multiscale simulations. The book is intended for graduate students in applied mathematics and those interested in multiscale compu- tions. It combines a practical introduction, numerical results, and analysis of multiscale ?nite element methods. Due to the page limitation, the material has been condensed. Each chapter of the book starts with an introduction and description of the proposed methods and motivating examples. Some new techniques are introduced using formal arguments that are justi?ed later in the last chapter. Numerical examples demonstrating the signi?cance of the proposed methods are presented in each chapter following the description of the methods. In the last chapter, we analyze a few representative cases with the objective of demonstrating the main error sources and the convergence of the proposed methods. A brief outline of the book is as follows. The ?rst chapter gives a general introductiontomultiscalemethodsandanoutlineofeachchapter.Thesecond chapter discusses the main idea of the multiscale ?nite element method and its extensions. This chapter also gives an overview of multiscale ?nite element methods and other related methods. The third chapter discusses the ext- sion of multiscale ?nite element methods to nonlinear problems. The fourth chapter focuses on multiscale methods that use limited global information.

Book Synopsis Quantitative Stochastic Homogenization and Large-Scale Regularity by : Scott Armstrong
Download or read book Quantitative Stochastic Homogenization and Large-Scale Regularity written by Scott Armstrong and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-09 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this book is the large-scale statistical behavior of solutions of divergence-form elliptic equations with random coefficients, which is closely related to the long-time asymptotics of reversible diffusions in random media and other basic models of statistical physics. Of particular interest is the quantification of the rate at which solutions converge to those of the limiting, homogenized equation in the regime of large scale separation, and the description of their fluctuations around this limit. This self-contained presentation gives a complete account of the essential ideas and fundamental results of this new theory of quantitative stochastic homogenization, including the latest research on the topic, and is supplemented with many new results. The book serves as an introduction to the subject for advanced graduate students and researchers working in partial differential equations, statistical physics, probability and related fields, as well as a comprehensive reference for experts in homogenization. Being the first text concerned primarily with stochastic (as opposed to periodic) homogenization and which focuses on quantitative results, its perspective and approach are entirely different from other books in the literature.
Book Synopsis Mathematics and Materials by : Mark J. Bowick
Download or read book Mathematics and Materials written by Mark J. Bowick and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2017-08-25 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A co-publication of the AMS, IAS/Park City Mathematics Institute, and Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Articles in this volume are based on lectures presented at the Park City summer school on “Mathematics and Materials” in July 2014. The central theme is a description of material behavior that is rooted in statistical mechanics. While many presentations of mathematical problems in materials science begin with continuum mechanics, this volume takes an alternate approach. All the lectures present unique pedagogical introductions to the rich variety of material behavior that emerges from the interplay of geometry and statistical mechanics. The topics include the order-disorder transition in many geometric models of materials including nonlinear elasticity, sphere packings, granular materials, liquid crystals, and the emerging field of synthetic self-assembly. Several lectures touch on discrete geometry (especially packing) and statistical mechanics. The problems discussed in this book have an immediate mathematical appeal and are of increasing importance in applications, but are not as widely known as they should be to mathematicians interested in materials science. The volume will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in analysis and partial differential equations, continuum mechanics, condensed matter physics, discrete geometry, and mathematical physics. Titles in this series are co-published with the Institute for Advanced Study/Park City Mathematics Institute. Members of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) receive a 20% discount from list price. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was mainly during the last two decades that the theory of homogenization or averaging of partial differential equations took shape as a distinct mathe matical discipline. This theory has a lot of important applications in mechanics of composite and perforated materials, filtration, disperse media, and in many other branches of physics, mechanics and modern technology. There is a vast literature on the subject. The term averaging has been usually associated with the methods of non linear mechanics and ordinary differential equations developed in the works of Poincare, Van Der Pol, Krylov, Bogoliubov, etc. For a long time, after the works of Maxwell and Rayleigh, homogeniza tion problems for· partial differential equations were being mostly considered by specialists in physics and mechanics, and were staying beyond the scope of mathematicians. A great deal of attention was given to the so called disperse media, which, in the simplest case, are two-phase media formed by the main homogeneous material containing small foreign particles (grains, inclusions). Such two-phase bodies, whose size is considerably larger than that of each sep arate inclusion, have been discovered to possess stable physical properties (such as heat transfer, electric conductivity, etc.) which differ from those of the con stituent phases. For this reason, the word homogenized, or effective, is used in relation to these characteristics. An enormous number of results, approximation formulas, and estimates have been obtained in connection with such problems as electromagnetic wave scattering on small particles, effective heat transfer in two-phase media, etc.
Book Synopsis Numerical Methods for Fluid Dynamics by : Dale R. Durran
Download or read book Numerical Methods for Fluid Dynamics written by Dale R. Durran and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-14 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This scholarly text provides an introduction to the numerical methods used to model partial differential equations, with focus on atmospheric and oceanic flows. The book covers both the essentials of building a numerical model and the more sophisticated techniques that are now available. Finite difference methods, spectral methods, finite element method, flux-corrected methods and TVC schemes are all discussed. Throughout, the author keeps to a middle ground between the theorem-proof formalism of a mathematical text and the highly empirical approach found in some engineering publications. The book establishes a concrete link between theory and practice using an extensive range of test problems to illustrate the theoretically derived properties of various methods. From the reviews: "...the books unquestionable advantage is the clarity and simplicity in presenting virtually all basic ideas and methods of numerical analysis currently actively used in geophysical fluid dynamics."
