Book excerpt: Wissenschaftliche Studie aus dem Jahr 2004 im Fachbereich BWL - Investition und Finanzierung, Note: keine, Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien (VWL (Doktoratsprogramm)), Veranstaltung: Intent Conference 2004 in Napoli, Italy, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: The specific aim of this paper is to offer suggestions and guidance on improving the effectiveness between the private and public sector to boost risk capital investment in R&D activities, presenting a series of recommendations in the chapter “Challenges facing the European Risk Capital Industry”, based on the latest report of policy makers in the EU (report of the European Commission) in 2003. The immediate background of the report was the dramatic change in the economic environment for private providers of risk capital, combined with rising concern for insufficient public risk capital measures in the European Union. This paper starts with the description of the important link between Risk Capital and R&D, followed by the analysis how private and public risk capital investments affect the business activity of SMEs and Entrepreneurs in Europe. After reviewing the important use of private risk capital instruments, the author summarizes major findings and explains which lessons have been learnt from the past to tackle the current risk capital funding gaps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this ground-breaking book is to inspire the principle of innovation as a permeating program for Europe’s societies. After demonstrating early success from the realization of a single market and single currency, the European cooperation process is falling short of delivering much needed results in policy areas which are key for sustainable economic growth and employment, notably innovation policy. Written by authors involved in an independent tripartite High Level Group on EU innovation policy management, Revolutionising EU Innovation Policy analyses the principle causes and offers solutions in order to increase both efficacy and democratic accountability. Presenting the benefits of an overarching innovation policy, the authors draw attention to issues that have been overlooked by research and technology based approaches to innovation, for example culture and education. Importantly, the book examines the interplay between EU innovation policies and the demands of businesses, enterprises, and social and political organizations to fully deploy their innovation potential.

Book excerpt: Europe's future success will depend on the integration and liquidity of its venture capital market and the inventiveness and management of its hi-tech industries. But Europe's venture capital market is dwarfed by that one of the USA, and its employment performance continues to be disappointing, small and medium sized businesses find it difficult to grow. At the worst, European entrepreneurs are faced with scepticism and ignorance in the banking sector, a lack of stock options, unreasonable legal and bureaucratic obstacles, a high cost of labour, unhelpful government agencies and unsympathetic tax authorities. To stimulate a wiedr debate on these issues, the federal trust set up an eminent international study group chaired by Sir Brian Corby. The rapporteur is Harry Cowie, Senior Research Fellow of the Federal Trust. The report analyses the problems faced by European entrepreneurs, and ask how it is possible to grow global companies in Europe. The study group examined the fiscal, economic, regulatory and cultural obstacles to the development of a truly integrated European capital market. It looks at the role of The European union institutions, and at the clusters of hi-tech success in Cambridge and Munich. Venture Capital in Europe makes wide-ranging proposals to foster entrepreneurship and facilitate the provision of venture capital. The report will be read widely by corporate strategies and public policy makers and students and practitioners of European union affairs and international economics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: In recent years the issue of early stage investment in new technology based firms has drawn considerable attention. Its relevance emerges from the rise of high technology industries in the global economy. As competition in established, mature industries all over the world is ever increasing, the importance of keeping up and increasing the speed of innovation to ensure competitiveness of companies and national wealth is widely recognized. Innovation may concern products or processes. It refers to the development of new proprietary knowledge, i. e. technology, which is embodied in marketable products or services. In as far as the added private knowledge increases the utility of a product to the customers, it adds value. Unless the new features of a product are matched by competitors, a company may earn innovation rents. Thus proprietary knowledge attained through innovation is an important source of strategic advantage. In a competitive, dynamic market, however innovation rents are not sustainable. Competitors will attempt to match and exceed the innovation advantage. This may be achieved by imitation or by adding other or more innovative features. Whereas following the product life cycle model initial growth may be steep and rents may be high for the first mover, imitators competing on price and other rivals competing on innovations, may inflate the monopolistic power of the proprietary knowledge. Striving to maintain and increase market shares and profitability, companies thus have a strong incentive to keep innovating. For new technology-based firms the importance of proprietary knowledge is particularly pronounced. These start-ups operate in a hostile competitive environment, characterized by high uncertainty, offering the potential for rapid growth and high profits on the upside, but also the substantial threat of incurring deep losses on the downside. Whereas large companies generally possess a diversified product portfolio and a host of strategic assets, small companies will need to compete on a single new product or service and the determination of its management team. Politicians, worried by high unemployment and budget deficits, lately fell in love with the high-technology start-ups for their ability to create jobs and ensure future tax revenues. New technology-based firms are drivers of structural change in the economy in that they are among the first to enter new high growth potential industries. For [...]

Book excerpt: Relative to the US, productivity growth and investment in R&D in lagging in the EU, where it is more difficult to finance and scale up promising, innovative startups. Many of the most successful EU startups move elsewhere for financing, causing the EU to lose out on both the direct growth benefits and positive spillovers from these innovative firms. The EU could nurture innovative startups by accelerating the development of its venture capital (VC) ecosystem. Reducing regulatory frictions, especially ones that deter pensions funds and insurers from investing in VC, combined with well-designed tax incentives for R&D investments could help accelerate the development of the VC sector. These and other key CMU initiatives, such as the consolidation of stock markets and reforming and harmonizing insolvency regimes, will take time. Given the urgency to boost innovation, giving public financial institutions like the European Investment Fund a more active and expanded role in kickstarting VC markets where needed and in familiarizing investors with the VC asset class can be a helpful interim step.

Book excerpt: A Triple Helix of university-industry-government interactions is the key to innovation in increasingly knowledge-based societies. As the creation, dissemination, and utilization of knowledge moves from the periphery to the center of industrial production and governance, the concept of innovation, in product and process, is itself being transformed. In its place is a new sense of 'innovation in innovation' - the restructuring and enhancement of the organizational arrangements and incentives that foster innovation. This triple helix intersection of relatively independent institutional spheres generates hybrid organizations such as technology transfer offices in universities, firms, and government research labs and business and financial support institutions such as angel networks and venture capital for new technology-based firms that are increasingly developing around the world. The Triple Helix describes this new innovation model and assists students, researchers, and policymakers in addressing such questions as: How do we enhance the role of universities in regional economic and social development? How can governments, at all levels, encourage citizens to take an active role in promoting innovation in innovation and, conversely, how can citizens so encourage their governments? How can firms collaborate with each other and with universities and government to become more innovative? What are the key elements and challenges to reaching these goals?
