Book excerpt: The book explores the theoretical and empirical issues relating to the interaction between corporate governance and corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities undertaken by Indian companies. It presents a highly detailed view on the evolution of CSR and its nexus with corporate governance. This is particularly timely in the context of the recent Indian Companies Act 2013, which mandates corporate social responsibility and revises the best corporate-governance practices for large companies. The findings of this study are unique in drawing from a unified framework of Indian corporate governance structure and corporate engagement in CSR. The book’s scope is both academic and practical; the research methodology developed and utilized is useful for researchers, while the implications and the selection of variables provide useful information for practitioners and stakeholders. Finally, although it focuses on large Indian companies, the findings can also be applied to research on other emerging economies.

Book excerpt: Corporate Social Responsibility is the mechanism through which the corporate organizations have executed their philanthropic visions for social welfare. It is a powerful way of making sustainable competitive profit and achieving lasting values for stakeholder as well as shareholder. Corporate Social Responsibility is very popular in financial sector, which the financial crisis did not damage as perceptible as in other countries of developed economies (Singer, 2009). In the recent years Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has witnessed tremendous increase in awareness and control in the global arena. CSR that emerged in 1960 was an attempt to link business with society. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) refers to strategies that Corporations or firms employ to conduct their business in a way that is ethical, society friendly and beneficial to community in terms of development. It is a concept where Business organizations apart from their profitability and growth show interest in societal and environmental welfare by taking the responsibility of impact of their activities on stakeholders, employees, shareholders, customers, suppliers, and civil society. In this regard, actions taken by corporate houses and regulatory authorities operating in developed nations are quite satisfactory. However in developing nations the situation of CSR activities by financial institutions is not so flourishing. The contribution of financial institutions including banks to sustainable development is paramount, considering the crucial role they play in financing the economic and developmental activities of the world. In this reference the present paper attempts to analyze the CSR practices in Indian banking sector.

Over the last few decades, which have seen the onset of globalization, emergence of the industrial sector and an increased focus on community development, much attention has been focused on the role of corporations towards developing those societies where their operations are based. The introduction and evolution of CSR theories and practice in the developed countries has given CSR theorists and practitioners the guidance to appropriately place and implement CSR initiatives to help develop their role in the developed societies. However, while ample literature exists on such CSR practices, little has been done to aid the development of CSR in developing countries. Characterized by peculiar economic, political and social settings, the developing world needed its own blueprint for how CSR works and how it could best succeed. The need for doing is especially pertinent to a country like India, which is presently at a very crucial threshold, economically, politically and socially. Given the need to contextualize CSR theory and practice to the developing context, several CSR theories and practices have been explored in this book, which will provide readers with a thorough understanding of CSR and its successful implementation.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Indian corporations following the 2013 legal mandate on corporate spending of profits for CSR. Bringing together authors hailing from diverse walks of life, the book pursues a 'hands-on' approach, with real-world case studies and examples that help the reader feel the dynamic pulse of India immediately after the ratification of the CSR mandate in the Companies Act, 2013. The Act is expected to affect over 16,300 companies with an estimated flow of approximately 200 billion Indian rupees into the economy every year, thus shaking the foundations of business and society and impacting the country at multiple stakeholder levels. As a result, India is likely to become the birthplace of social, economic, and environmental transformation through financial investments in CSR! In order to insightfully reflect on this transition, this book has been divided into three parts. The first part presents the CSR mandate and its implications, while the second focuses on its implementation and the third part provides a view on the way forward. The book helps to reveal the various layers of CSR in an emerging economy like India and is expected to spark debate, discussion and research among policy-makers, consultants, academics, practitioners and other stakeholders the world over, which will further expand its contribution to CSR literature and open up new vistas in CSR research. "This is indeed a first of its kind book and marks a watershed in the journey of CSR. It is an extremely important contribution to the body of knowledge in the area of CSR and Corporate Governance in emerging economies that is driven by a completely different set of challenges, opportunities and requirements from that of developed economies." Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee, Director General & CEO, Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs

Book excerpt: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a tool used by the corporate to live up to the people's demand that organizations be more responsible to the environment they operate in. This paper makes a humble attempt to examine the impact of CSR on Corporate Sustainability (CS), defined in terms of an organization's financial performance, in the Indian banking industry. It tries to draw a relationship between CSR rating and an organization's financial performance indicators like Profit After Tax (PAT) and Earnings Per Share (EPS) after controlling for the effect of other variables like size of the organization (defined in terms of assets) and age of the organization (defined in terms of difference between the year of establishment and year of survey). The study would find relevance as it tries to sensitize the managers in the banking sector or any other organization to probe further and deeper to understand the impact of CSR on their sustainability while taking decisions about investing in CSR areas.

Although the mandate is applicable only to certain large and stable companies, many believe that India is poised to become the birthplace of social, economic and environmental transformation, given the immense size of the Indian population and its challenging socio-economic index. The book explores the various facets of CSR investigation and places special emphasis on the Schedule VII of the Indian Companies Act of 2013, which defines specific areas of intervention for these companies. In addition, it provides a wealth of first-hand case studies that exemplify the ongoing developments and the fundamental challenges and opportunities of mandated CSR.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In India CSR as a mandatory obligation is around five years and the subject area is evolving. The last five years have been a roller coaster ride for many CSR professionals and the journey will continue to be intriguing with an ever-changing landscape. It may take a few more years before we could have seamless processes and systems in place. A good number of development organisations are trying out various ways and means of creating impact with access and availability of CSR grants. It has also seen the emergence of CSR agencies, social enterprises and platforms that will boost and recognise NGO efforts and corporate reputation. These are interesting times indeed! With the emergence of CSR as an important subject in the academia, government and media echelons it is critical that development practitioners and CSR professionals have a philosophical background of the topic. It is also important to understand definitions of various social, economic and political jargons, related institutions and world systems. The book restates and simplifies these from a CSR practitioner’s point of view and captures CSR professional’s journey of understanding the subject area over the years. It also provides few practical approaches to make their role relevant, contextual and prepare for the future. The book also fills the gap of non-availability from a practitioner’s point of view of the CSR subject.

Book excerpt: Over the last few years, the bank’s engagement in corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become a relevant and timely topic. Academics and practitioners have been paying growing attention to how banks integrate socially responsible issues in their business models. By its nature, the banking system provides products and services that assume a specific relevance for social and economic development. More than other industries, banks need to build positive relationships with stakeholders in order to effectively carry out their business. This appears even more important in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis. The latter has challenged the reputation of the banks, questioning the true ethicality of banks’ business choices. Against this backdrop, the engagement in CSR may represent for banks the opportunity to demonstrate that they are operating in line with societal expectations. The current volume intends to extend the knowledge on CSR in the banking industry, providing empirical evidence on determinants and effects of banks’ engagement in socially responsible initiatives. In particular, the volume shows that banks with favorable financial performance tend to be more engaged in CSR. Moreover, the study demonstrates that some board of directors’ characteristics are critical in predicting the bank’s engagement in CSR. The volume also indicates that stakeholders favorably perceive the bank’s undertaking of socially responsible initiatives. Indeed, the analysis shows that customers of large banks appear particularly sensitive to the integration of socially responsible issues in bank’s products.

Book excerpt: In the contemporary debate on the modern corporation and its impact on the economy, society and nation, the focus has shifted from growth with only profitability to growth with sustainable development, which includes the stakeholders. While there is considerable debate on the corporations' obligations to civil society in the Western world, in the developing countries the debate is sporadic; the present publication is an effort to initiate a nationwide discourse on the concepts and practices of corporate social action in India. The book is divided in two sections; section one contains papers, which analyze the conceptual framework of Corporate Social Responsibility. The unique feature of this book is the case studies on different aspects of CSR presented in section Two. The cases focus on such segments as education, healthcare and environment, among others. It is for the first time that under the aegis of UNDP-CII-AICTE-MDI the business schools in the country participated in preparing cases from various industries focusing on the process and decision making content implicit in the introduction, implementation, and evaluation of various facets of Corporate Social Responsibility. The cases are illustrative and they will help in identifying further areas of research. The teaching notes have been developed by the individual authors, and will be available on request.

Book excerpt: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is well recognized across the world as various international bodies, government authorities and regulators are taking cognizance of the matter and framing guidelines to be adopted by the corporate. The social concern of corporate has taken the front seat in the forum of issues related with good governance practices to achieve sustainability. But still the type of industry for which CSR is relevant is under question. The present paper attempts to answer the question by determining the impact of CSR on the financial performance of the banks. It uses regression analysis to determine the impact of CSR expenditure on the financial performance of banks, measured using Profit After Tax (PAT), Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE) and market capitalization of the banks. As a result of the study, a validated model is developed, which shows a positive relationship between CSR expenditure and different measures of financial performance while firm size is controlled.

Book excerpt: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), a concept of engaging the company in socially responsible behavior, is getting worldwide attention since couple of decades. Though initially thought to be a developed country concept, it already has made its strong presence in the developing countries like Bangladesh. There are tremendous encouragement coming from CSR activities made the scenario vibrant and CSR policy of firms is now a top issue that stakeholders talk about. This study analyzes data from top ten CSR performing banks from the Bangladeshi banking sector and finds that CSR expenditure by banks increases over time and lots of stakeholders benefit from that. The major areas of CSR activities include education, humanitarian and disaster relief, arts and culture, sports, environment, health etc. However, the reporting of CSR expenditure is not yet perfect though the central bank has made it mandatory in 2008. In some cases, banks disclose qualitative information rather than quantitative in case of CSR initiatives.
