Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The passage of Citizens United by the Supreme Court in 2010 sparked a renewed debate about campaign spending by large political action committees, or Super PACs. Its ruling said that it is okay for corporations and labor unions to spend as much as they want in advertising and other methods to convince people to vote for or against a candidate. This book provides a wide range of opinions on the issue. Includes primary and secondary sources from a variety of perspectives; eyewitnesses, scientific journals, government officials, and many others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook presents a most updated and comprehensive exploration of social movement research. It not only maps, but also expands the field of social movement studies, taking stock of recent developments in cognate areas of studies, within and beyond sociology and political science. While structured around traditional social movement concepts, each section combines the mapping of the state of the art with attempts to broaden our knowledge of social movements beyond classic theoretical agendas, and to identify the contribution that social movement studies can give to other fields of knowledge.

Book Synopsis Antecedents of Foreign Corporate Political Activity in American Politics by : Lee Warren Brown
Download or read book Antecedents of Foreign Corporate Political Activity in American Politics written by Lee Warren Brown and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International firms compete in the United States in both the market and non-market arenas (Doh, & Lucea, 2013). The international management literature has a long history of research focused on market competition, but nonmarket competition has been largely ignored (Lawton, McGuire & Rajwani, 2013). At the same time, there is a large and increasing amount of money being spent by foreign firms on lobbying and other non-market activities in America. In an effort to aid in our understanding of foreign firms who engage in corporate political activity (CPA) in the United States, I investigated foreign firms that engage in CPA in America. In this multi-level examination I hypothesized country, industry and firm level antecedents using a sample of 33,299 foreign firms, 129 of which engage in CPA in the United States. Findings indicate that firm size, the presence of institutional investors, and industry structure have the strongest influence on foreign firms engaging in CPA in the US. Previous research on corporate political activity has been dominated by the study of domestic firms. This domestic focus occurs despite the fact that foreign entities make up a quarter of the total money spent on lobbying in America (Freeman, 2012). This is one of the first studies of CPA across a broad range of countries and industries to date. This is also the first study, to my knowledge, that attempts to test well established domestic CPA findings in foreign firms.
Book Synopsis Factors Determining Corporate Political Activities in the U.S. Food and Tobacco Industries by : Sanjib Bhuyan
Download or read book Factors Determining Corporate Political Activities in the U.S. Food and Tobacco Industries written by Sanjib Bhuyan and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role and importance of special interest groups in the policy process in the United States is well documented. Activities of such groups include putting political pressure on the government through lobbying and political campaign contributions to repeal certain regulations that cut into firm or industry profits or to impose regulatory protections that raise firm or industry profits. Food and tobacco manufacturing firms in the United States actively participate in political activities to influence public policy formulation and implementation. This study empirically examines the conditions that must be met if food and tobacco firms are to organize and participate in corporate political activities to influence government. According to empirical findings, such conditions require that the industry is highly concentrated, has a large number of employees, has high average sales per firm, and has a high profit rate. Corporate political activities, however, decline beyond a critical level of concentration.
