Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This up-to-date, research-oriented textbook focuses on the relationship between compensation systems and firm overall performance. In contrast to more traditional compensation texts, it provides a strategic perspective to compensation administration rather than a functional viewpoint. The text emphasizes the role of managerial pay, its importance, determinants, and impact on organizations. It analyzes recent topics in executive compensation, such as pay in high technology firms, managerial risk taking, rewards in family companies, and the link between compensation and social responsibility and ethical issues, among others. The authors provide a thorough and comprehensive review of the vast literatures relevant to compensation and revisit debates grounded in different theoretical perspectives. They provide insights from disciplines as diverse as management, economics, sociology, and psychology, and amplify previous discussions with the latest empirical findings on compensation, its dynamics, and its contribution to firm overall performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Keidel explains that most organizational issues are a balance of three variables: individual autonomy, hierarchical control, and spontaneous cooperation. By learning to frame issues as trade-offs among these design variables, one can see underlying patterns that previously had not been visible - and thereby make more intelligent analyses, choices, and commitments than would otherwise be possible. Seeing Organizational Patterns converts organizational design into an art form of triangular patterns. Featuring vivid examples and consulting-based cases, this book offers a wealth of theoretical insights and practical lessons. Keidel provides a set of conceptual lenses that enables you to see organizations more clearly, systematically, and imaginatively than ever before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Lex Donaldson, one of the leading scholars in the field of organization theory, introduces a compelling theory of performance-driven organizational change, Organizational Portfolio Theory. In explaining why organizations change and also why they fail to change, the theory reconceptualizes the organization as a portfolio with a number of different causes of organizational performance varying over time. The author argues that without a performance crisis there is a good chance that necessary organizational changes will not be forthcoming, and that moreover, the adaptive change induced by the crisis creates the capacity for fresh organizational growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique text examines strategic management and its implementation in the context of what we know about how individuals and organizations actually make decisions. Through this behavioral approach, students gain a richer, more realistic understanding of how to create coherent strategies that take advantage their strengths and build their capabilities. Integrating analytical tools found in a typical strategy textbook with cognitive and psychological insights into decision making, the book focuses on core issues that will help students understand the complexities inherent in making profitable decisions. Readers will learn about the purpose of organizations; consider how political, technological, and industry environments play into firm capabilities; how these capabilities are used in competition; and how to adapt strategies over time. The authors also cover important topics like managerial cognition, learning, and corporate strategy, which receive scant attention in other texts. Chapter summaries, experiential exercises, and "Food for Thought" boxes featuring plenty of discussion questions provide practical insight into how to utilize a successful strategy and maintain a consistent, long-term direction within a firm. Succinct and well-written, Behavioral Strategic Management offers graduate students of strategy a deeper and broader understanding of the topic.

Schmidt The impressive development of the finance literature with its emphasis on asset pricing and the formal modeling of incentive systems during the past three decades, has largely relegated the business and operational aspects of banking as an industry from the agenda of academic research. Though this is understandable, it is especially regrettable in view of the dynamic dev- opments in the banking industry which have started about a decade ago and are currently in full swing. Fortunately, there are now signs of a change to the effect that banking is back on the research agenda. The p- sent book by Professor De Laurentis and his co-authors is a highly inno- tive and interesting manifestation of this reorientation. Banking is an important part of any financial system, and it is especially important in the financial systems of the countries of Continental Europe, such as Italy, France, and Germany, which have been bank-based for d- ades and which are, in my view, likely to remain bank-based for the fo- seeable future. There are many reasons, based on empirical and theoretical considerations, to believe that strong banks are not only important for the banking industry itself, but also for the respective national economies.

Book excerpt: Synthesizes the empirical literature on organizationalstructuring to answer the question of how organizations structure themselves --how they resolve needed coordination and division of labor. Organizationalstructuring is defined as the sum total of the ways in which an organizationdivides and coordinates its labor into distinct tasks. Further analysis of theresearch literature is neededin order to builda conceptualframework that will fill in the significant gap left by not connecting adescription of structure to its context: how an organization actuallyfunctions. The results of the synthesis are five basic configurations (the SimpleStructure, the Machine Bureaucracy, the Professional Bureaucracy, theDivisionalized Form, and the Adhocracy) that serve as the fundamental elementsof structure in an organization. Five basic parts of the contemporaryorganization (the operating core, the strategic apex, the middle line, thetechnostructure, and the support staff), and five theories of how it functions(i.e., as a system characterized by formal authority, regulated flows, informalcommunication, work constellations, and ad hoc decision processes) aretheorized. Organizations function in complex and varying ways, due to differing flows -including flows of authority, work material, information, and decisionprocesses. These flows depend on the age, size, and environment of theorganization; additionally, technology plays a key role because of itsimportance in structuring the operating core. Finally, design parameters aredescribed - based on the above five basic parts and five theories - that areused as a means of coordination and division of labor in designingorganizational structures, in order to establish stable patterns of behavior.(CJC).
