Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life in the early twentieth-century coalmining communities changed very little for the women who dedicated their lives to their miner husbands. The women's working days were much longer than the miners, who typically worked an 8-hour shift. Their living conditions were poor and lack of investment by the coal owners greatly challenged their homemaking skills as they faced life without many basics, such as clean water and sewerage systems. Health services were slow to develop and women's health was only just beginning to be of some importance to the medical profession. Coal-miner wives in the twentieth century also had to cope with demands put upon their families by the First World War, which highlighted the importance of solidarity, a feature of mining communities that had proved itself to be at the heart of colliery village life. This follow-up book to the popular Women of the Durham Coalfield in the 19th Century continues with the story of Hannah's daughter as she negotiates homemaking in the most challenging of conditions.

Book Synopsis No Regrets in the Evening of Life by : Neville Buch
Download or read book No Regrets in the Evening of Life written by Neville Buch and published by Boolarong Press. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The type of local and school history before the reader may be unfamiliar. It is a definitive and scholarly history in the style of many grammar school histories in Queensland. Although it is not unknown for Australian public and private schooling, it is unique for Queensland state schools. By saying it is a ‘definitive and scholarly history’, what is meant is not that the history is complete; only that it reaches decisive conclusions in a substantive treatment. In this particular case, the historian is someone who has been trained at the level of a higher degree.
Book Synopsis Edith Ayrton Zangwill's The Call by : Edith Ayrton Zangwill
Download or read book Edith Ayrton Zangwill's The Call written by Edith Ayrton Zangwill and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-14 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edith Ayrton Zangwill's 1924 novel The Call is widely regarded as one of the most important suffrage novels of the early 20th century. Including authoritative notes and commentary throughout, this is the first comprehensive scholarly edition of the novel. The Call tells the story of a young chemist, Ursula Winfield, who comes of age in the years before the start of the First World War. Confronted by the gross injustices faced by women and the working class in early 20th-century Britain, she is drawn inexorably and with increasing militancy into the suffragette movement. The story charts the conflict between her political commitments and her personal life as the Great War approaches. Alongside the definitive text of the novel, this edition also includes contextual historical documents – from contemporary reviews of the novel to newspaper coverage of the suffragette movement – and critical chapters by leading scholars exploring the world of the novel.
