Book excerpt: For the past 8 years, photographer Livia Corona has documented the "Enanitos Toreros," troupes of little people performing as bullfighters. She toured and lived with them throughout Mexico and migrant farming communities in the US, often traveling with 12 to 14 people in a single van. The cars blared out a tailored audiotape advertisement: "This evening, in your town, the "Enanitos Toreros" have arrived with a show that will kill you. But kill you with laughter." Upon meeting a female bullfighter, Corona was invited to join their tour as their photographer, in exchange for promotional images. Attracted to their life and determination, a friendship developed between Corona and the bullfighters, who narrated their frank opinions on their lives and profession. "The bull charges at you and does not look to see if you are tall, short, skinny, or fat," says one bullfighter. "If you do not know how to bullfight, they will knock you out, and if you aren't careful you can get killed. But we never kill the bull. I like this, I just wish we got paid better." Another performer explains, "Personally this has helped me a lot. I enjoy the exchange with the audience, because people get curious about you and want to know you--they value you as a performer. When I walk on the street people come up to me and greet me." "Enanitos Toreros" is a Mexican cultural tradition dating back decades to its beginnings in Spain. In "Enanitos Toreros," a series of photographs and interviews depict the bullfights, the families, the spectators, and the everyday life of this community of artists. The images share an intimate, parallel gaze between Corona and her subjects, and present a tough and arresting defiance that contests the stereotypical assumptions towards a community often bound by rejection and ridicule.

Book excerpt: Ernest Hemingway, best-known to layman and aficionado alike, in his fiction described bullfighting, or toreo, as a cross between romantic risk and a drunken party, or as an elaborate substitute for war, ending in wounds or death. Although his descriptions of the "beauty"in toreo are lyrical, they are short on imaginative creation of how such beauty, through techniques and discipline, comes about. Hemingway may have sculpted a personal mystique of toreo but, in the opinion of some, he ignored or slighted the full, unique nature of the subject. In Bullfighting: Art, Technique, and Spanish Society John McCormick sorts through the complexities of toreo, to suggest the aesthetic, social, and moral dimensions of an art that is geographically limited, but universal when seen in round. While having felt the attraction of Hemingway's approach, McCormick knew that he was being seduced by elements that had little to do with toreo. To try to right Hemingway's distortions, he named the first edition of this book The Complete Aficionado, but then realized that the volume was directed at more than just the spectator: BullFighting is written from the point of view of the torerro, as opposed to the usual spectator's impressions and enthusiasm. With the help of a retired matador de toros, Mario Sevilla Mascarenas, who taught McCormick the rudiments of toreo as well as the emotions and discipline essential to survival, the authors rescue 'toreo from romantic cliches. They probe the anatomy of the matador's training and technique, provide a past-and-present survey of the traditions of the corrida, and furnish dramatic portraits of such famous figures as Manolete, Joselito, Belmonte, and Ordonez. Here then is an informed analysis and critique of the origins and myths of toreo and a survey of the novels it has inspired. Book excerpt: Bullfight: Paintings and Works on Paper is Glitterati's second collection of works by world-renowned Colombian artist Fernando Botero. Featuring more than 140 oils paintings and 35 drawings, this book is a comprehensive look at another of the artist's most iconic subjects. In his youth, Botero developed a passion for bullfighting that has remained with him throughout his illustrious, six-decade career. The artist was profoundly influenced by the spectacle of the bullring - the vivid colors, the dynamic movement, the beauty and violence, bravery and fear. In Botero's signature style, the figures of the bullfight appear inflated and voluptuous, a grandiose exploration of scale, space, and volume. Matadors and picadors, horses and bulls, spirited crowds and striking portraits - all are exaggerated and exalted by the hand of the artist. As Jose Manuel Caballero Bonald writes, "His task is not to reproduce reality as it appears before the naked eye but rather to reinvent or reconstruct it according to his personal experience and accumulated feelings. In this sense there is no painter more truly Colombian than Botero. And yet, the more genuinely local his art is, the more universal it becomes."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CAMILLE, SKELETONS and the MATADOR MURALIST is a continuation of the Camille series of books that look at the cultures of different countries through the Arts. In this book, the Mexican culture and specifically the art and culture of the Mexicans living in Tucson, Arizona.Camille, a young artist who lives in Tucson, finds that her new neighbors are Mexican and have a daughter named Rosa who is her age. Both girls enjoy many of the same things but in particular the arts. When first meeting her new friend, Camille is introduced to problems many Mexicans face when migrating to the United States. While Rosa has come to the States legally, her family has stories of friends who entered illegally with the help of Coyotes. Rosa, herself, also faces some problems adapting to the American lifestyle. It is through their friendship that Camille becomes aware of the many Mexican traditions. She is told the story of the beautiful painting of the Virgin of Guadalupe that hangs in Rosa's house. She is introduced to some of the Mexican art in Tucson including the murals of the Mexican artist Salvador Corona. A former bullfighter, Corona had been gorged by a bull and was told he can never fight again. With the help of a friend, Corona learns to paint and begins a life of an artist painting not only murals but furniture as well. Corona's grandson, Arturo Artrade, is a friend of Rosa's mother. He brings the girls to the Bates Hotel, also known as the Mountain Oyster Club or Maker House, and shows them the beautiful murals of his grandfather. One of the murals will play a key part in this story. The next day, Rosa invites Camille to the Day of the Dead parade. Camille, having always been curious about the parade, accepts the invitation. She goes to Rosa's house to prepare for the celebration and learns to make sugar skulls and the beautiful bread for the ofrenda or altar that she prepares with Rosa and her mother. She learns the meaning of the ofrenda and how the petals of the marigolds help the spirits of dead relatives find the ofrenda. Rosa offers Camille a place on the altar where she can put a picture of her grandparents who have passed away. This makes Camille very happy as she misses her grandparents and wants to honor them as well. The parade begins on the day that Americans celebrate Halloween. Rosa is fascinated with the idea of Halloween and trick or treating. Halloween is only on one day while the Day of the Dead goes on for three days. Before the parade, Camille goes to Rosa's house to have her face painted as a skeleton and to dress in a special costume. Rosa explains to Camille how the art of the Mexican artist, Posada has influenced the way people dress and paint their faces for the parade. Before leaving, the girls are reminded to meet the rest of the Rosa's family near the Urn for the burning ceremony of the remembrances of their relatives. The girls then join the parade. Unfortunately, they get separated. While they had set up in advance to meet under Corona's mural but Camille feels Rosa may not remember how to get there as she is new to Tucson. While the parade is safe, a young girl roaming the streets along could be a target of the Cartel.During her search for Rosa, Camille passes another Tucson art treasure. The sculpture filled Garden of Gethsemane created by the native American, veteran and artist, Felix Lucero. Camille is fascinated but it is getting late and she must find her friend. I don't want to reveal the end of the story. This book and my other books make excellent teaching materials for Teachers who want to explore the art and culture of different countries. CAMILLE'S FAKES, my first book in this series, explores different concepts in the arts. CAMILLE'S GIFT, I wrote with the help of two Tibetan monks and looks at the arts of Tibet. CAMILLE'S DREAMING explores the Australian Aboriginal art and culture. All of these books can be found on Amazon.

Book excerpt: To write about Don Andres Martinez de Leon is to swim in the Guadalquivir and feel the magic of the fair of Seville, it is to dance the flamenco songs in honor of one of the great impressionist painters of Spain and the bullfighting world; is filled it with the taste of a bullfight next to bullfighters, cuadril and pasodobles with a life and death flavor, to banderillas and costume of lights, to ears and tail with the sand of the arena flavored with blood and courage; His work is vast and his brush, pencil and deep inspiration of his country splendid.Coria del Rio is painted in colors with a taste of the sea, blessed by our lady of the star and baptized in the chapel of El Rocío when it is confirmed in the chapel of La Soledad, announcing that an absent Coriano is worthy of being named among the exalted ones, because I sing to the brush, between the pencil, the oil and the watercolor, as Pastora Soler or Antonio Romero has done, giving him magisterial passes to the strokes on the canvas or the paper in Sevillian trenches of the son of Manolito Corona; Andrés Martínez de León was born on April 5, 1895 in the street of the loft # 45 of the marine district evoking the beginning of a century that arrived when only 3,360 inhabitants knew of the arrival of the little Andrés, who from his childhood showed his natural leadership, his sincerity, and his self-confidence despite his natural shyness.

In page after page of spectacularly colorful and original photography he vividly captures the ballet of the pass. The bullfighter's subtle and precarious dance is revealed in the photographic blur of a speeding half-ton bull, dared and challenged by swirling and swooping capes, just at the critical moment that it passes mere inches from the matador. With an essay from Spain's leading authority and most respected bullfighting critic and an excerpt from Hemmingway's Death in the Afternoon, the work in Passes is poised to join that of legendary artists such as Francisco de Goya and painters Edouard Manet and Pablo Picasso in tribute to bullfighting and the ancient Spanish ritual of the corrida.

Book excerpt: Under constant surveillance and policed by increasingly militarized means, Arizona's border is portrayed in the media as a site of sharp political and ethnic divisions. But this view obscures the region's deeper history. Bringing to light the shared cultural and commercial ties through which businessmen and politicians forged a transnational Sunbelt, Standing on Common Ground recovers the vibrant connections between Tucson, Arizona, and the neighboring Mexican state of Sonora. Geraldo L. Cadava corrects misunderstandings of the borderland's past and calls attention to the many types of exchange, beyond labor migrations, that demonstrate how the United States and Mexico continue to shape one another. In the 1940s, a flourishing cross-border traffic developed in the Arizona-Sonora Sunbelt, as the migrations of entrepreneurs, tourists, shoppers, and students maintained a densely connected transnational corridor. Politicians on both sides worked to cultivate a common ground of free enterprise, spurring the growth of manufacturing, ranching, and agriculture. However, as Cadava illustrates, these modernizing forces created conditions that marginalized the very workers who propped up the regional economy, and would eventually lead to the social and economic instability that has troubled the Arizona-Sonora borderland in recent times. Grounded in rich archival materials and oral histories, Standing on Common Ground clarifies why we cannot understand today's fierce debates over illegal immigration and border enforcement without identifying the roots of these problems in the Sunbelt's complex pan-ethnic and transnational history.
