Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Corneille This picture illustrates among other things how fashionable the drama had become. We are in the centre of the great social world, and that world. Is absorbed in the stage. Whatever the play may be, one thing is certain, it is the work of some poet approved of society. This theatre of the Palais Cardinal, with its pomp and magnifi cence, offers a striking contrast to the theatre of Hotel de Bourgogne as the historians describe it. Book Synopsis Classics Incorporated by : Elise Noël McMahon
Download or read book Classics Incorporated written by Elise Noël McMahon and published by Summa Publications, Inc.. This book was released on 1998 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work Professor McMahon takes a new approach to interpreting the most canonized century in French literature. By viewing literature as essentially a cultural practice, she offers an unconventional reading of canonical masterpieces of the era (Corneille's Medee, Moliere's La Bourgeois gentilhomme, Racine's Phedre, and La Fontaine's Fables) to the extent that these works are compared to "non-literary" texts which focus on the human body. "Classics Incorporated" draws on extensive archival research into such unfamiliar historical sources as cookbooks, shopping guides, treatises on medicine and monstrosity, and dance manuals. Because of this insistence on treating literature as part of a given culture and historicising texts in a novel manner, "Classics Incorporated" stands apart as a critical study that can appeal to a diverse audience: those who are interested in cultural criticism, popular culture, cultural history, and critical theory alike.

Book Synopsis Corneille's Le Cid (Classic Reprint) by : F. M. Warren
Download or read book Corneille's Le Cid (Classic Reprint) written by F. M. Warren and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-07 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Corneille's Le Cid This edition of Le Cid aims especially at emphasizing its literary significance. For this reason it contains the articles written by Corneille in answer to his critics, and in which he judges his own work. The text follows that of the Marty-Laveaux edition (in the Hachette series of "Les Grands Ecrivains de la France"), reproduced from Corneille's last revision of 1682. In volume iii. of this edition may be found the variants to the play, the lines of Castro's Las Mocedades del Cid which were more particularly imitated by Corneille, and an analysis of the Spanish drama. The history of the French stage after 1550 and previous to 1630 is considered at length in E. Rigal's "Alexandre Hardy" (Paris, 1889). To understand the literary bearing of Le Cid and Corneille's dramatic ideas at the time, one should also consult the Spanish original (Las Mocedades del Cid, primera parte, edited by E. Merimee, Toulouse, 1890). For historical data concerning the hero and his surroundings there is nothing more recent than R. Dozy's "Recherches sur l'histoire de l'Espagne" (third edition, Leyden, 1881). I can find no reliable account of the Cid's family. Book excerpt: The quarrel between the ancients and moderns was resumed in the 17th century as writers and artists debated how far to risk the freedom to innovate. This text argues that it was this tension that gave unity to the cultural life of the period and helped define its baroque character.

Book Synopsis French Theatre in the Neo-classical Era, 1550-1789 by : William Driver Howarth
Download or read book French Theatre in the Neo-classical Era, 1550-1789 written by William Driver Howarth and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-06-05 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1997 book covers the period which saw the establishment in France of a centralized official theatre - not only the Comédie-Française (the first 'national' theatre), but an Italian theatre and a state opera; the often subversive independent theatres are also discussed. Nearly 1,000 documents deal with censorship and other aspects of external control, company management, the acting profession, dramatic theory and criticism, theatre architecture, settings and costumes, audience composition and behaviour. Over 120 pictorial documents - architectural drawings, technical engravings, frontispieces, portraits, etc. - provide a visual dimension where relevant. A full linking narrative and a copious bibliography help to make this an important reference work and a valuable research tool.
