This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several years, core level spectroscopies and other, c\osely related, electron spectroscopies have provided very useful information about the atomic composition, the geometric structure, and the electronic structure of condensed matter. Recently, these spectroscopies have also been used for the study of magnetic properties; such studies have a great potential to extend our knowledge and understanding of magnetic systems. This volume collects the lectures presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Core Level Spectroscopies for Magnetic Phenomena: Theory and Experiment" held at the Ettore Majorana Centre, Erice, Sicily, on 15 to 26 May 1994. The topics considered at the ASI covered a wide range of subjects involving the use of core-level and related spectroscopies to study magnetic phenomena. There are a large and growing number of applications of these spectroscopies to the study of magnetic materials; an important objective of the ASI was to stimulate further growth. The topics covered at the ASI can be placed into three general groups: 1) fundamental principles of core level spectroscopies; 2) basic aspects of magnetic phenomena; and, 3) the combination of the two previous topics embodied in applications of the spectroscopies to magnetism. In all three groups, theoretical interpretations as weH as experimental measurements were presented, often both of these aspects were covered in a single lecture or series oflectures. The theoretical treatments ofthe spectroscopies as weH as of the magnetic phenomena help to establish a framework for understanding many of the experimental measurements on magnetic materials.

Book Synopsis Hot Hadronic Matter by : Jean Letessier

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has seen the development of the operational understanding of fun damental interactions within the standard model. This has detoured our attention from the great enigmas posed by the dynamics and collective behavior of strongly interacting particles. Discovered more than 30 years ago, the thermal nature of the hadronic particle spectra has stimulated considerable theoretical effort, which so far has failed to 'confirm' on the basis of microscopic interactions the origins of this phenomenon. However, a highly successful Statistical Bootstrap Model was developed by Rolf Hagedorn at CERN about 30 years ago, which has led us to consider the 'boiling hadronic matter' as a transient state in the trans formation of hadronic particles into their melted form which we call Quark-GIuon-Plasma (QGP). Today, we return to seek detailed understanding of the thermalization processes of hadronic matter, equipped on the theoretical side with the knowledge of the fundamental strong interaction theory, the quantum chromo-dynamics (QCD), and recognizing the im portant role of the complex QCD-vacuum structure. On the other side, we have developed new experimental tools in the form of nuclear relativistic beams, which allow to create rather extended regions in space-time of Hot Hadronic Matter. The confluence of these new and recent developments in theory and experiment led us to gather together from June 27 to July 1, 1994, at the Grand Hotel in Divonne-Ies-Bains, France, to discuss and expose the open questions and issues in our field.
Book Synopsis Band-Ferromagnetism by : K. Baberschke
Download or read book Band-Ferromagnetism written by K. Baberschke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-08-28 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fascinating phenomenon ferromagnetism is far from being fully understood, although it surely belongs to the oldest problems of solid state physics. For any investigation it appears recommendable to distinguish between materials whose spontaneous magnetization stems from localized electrons of a partially ?lled atomic shell and those in which it is due to itinerant electrons of a partially ?lled conduction band. In the latter case one speaks of band-ferromagnetism, prototypes of which are the classical ferromagnets Fe, Co, and Ni. The present book is a status report on the remarkable progress that has recently been made towards a microscopic understanding of band-ferromagnetism as an electron c- relation e?ect. The authors of the various chapters of this book “Band-Ferromagnetism: Ground-State and Finite-Temperature Phenomena” participated as selected - perts in the 242nd WE-Heraeus-Seminar (4-6 October 2000) held under almost the same title in Wandlitz near Berlin (Germany). It was the second seminar of this type in Wandlitz. (The ?rst in 1998 dealt with the complementary topic of the physics of local-moment ferromagnets such as Gd). Twenty-six invited spe- ers from ten di?erent countries together with ?fty-?ve further participants, who presented contributions in form of posters, spent three days together discussing in an enthusiastic and fertile manner the hot topics of band-ferromagnetism.

Book Synopsis High Magnetic Fields in Semiconductor Physics II by : Gottfried Landwehr
Download or read book High Magnetic Fields in Semiconductor Physics II written by Gottfried Landwehr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains contributions presented at the International Conference "The Application of High Magnetic Fields in Semiconductor Physics", which was held at the University of Wiirzburg from August 22 to 26, 1988. In the tradition of previous Wiirzburg meetings on the subject - the first conference was held in 1972 - only invited papers were presented orally. All 42 lecturers were asked to review their subject to some extent so that this book gives a good overview of the present state of the respective topic. A look at the contents shows that the subjects which have been treated at previous conferences have not lost their relevance. On the contrary, the application of high magnetic fields to semiconductors has grown substantially during the recent past. For the elucidation of the electronic band structure of semicon ductors high magnetic fields are still an indispensable tool. The investigation of two-dimensional electronic systems especially is frequently connected with the use of high magnetic fields. The reason for this is that a high B-field adds angular momentum quantization to the boundary quantization present in het erostructures and superlattices. A glance at the contributions shows that the majority deal with 2D properties. Special emphasis was on the integral and fractional quantum Hall effect. Very recent results related to the observation of a fraction with an even denbminator were presented. It became obvious that the polarization of the different fractional Landau levels is more complicated than originally anticipated.

Book Synopsis Spin-orbit Coupling Influenced X-ray Spectroscopies and Resonant X-ray Magneto-optical Properties of Transition Metal Systems by : Ján Minár
Download or read book Spin-orbit Coupling Influenced X-ray Spectroscopies and Resonant X-ray Magneto-optical Properties of Transition Metal Systems written by Ján Minár and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2003 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the many tools one has in hand in material science, the various electronic spectroscopies are of particular interest. Techniques based on synchrotron radiation, such as spin-resolved photoemission, X-ray magnetic circular and linear dichroism, resonant X-ray scattering and also X-ray magnetic microscopy have been shown to provide unique tools for the study of the magnetic phenomena and magnetic materials. However, it became apparent that all these new achievements need a strong theoretical support. Ab-initio theoretical investigations presented here adopted a one-electron picture, within the framework of Density functional theory, using the multiple scattering theory to solve the electronic structure problem. Most of the spectroscopies to be dealt with here can be seen as a direct consequence of the presence of a spontaneous magnetisation and relativistic effects, in particular the spin-orbit coupling. To deal with all relativistic effects and magnetism on the same level, the fully relativistic formalism will be used in the following. Thus, one of the goals of this work is to apply the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) band structure method in its relativistic version to a wide range of spectroscopies. Accordingly, all results will be compared with available experimental data as far as possible. Based on these results various aspects connected with experiments will be discussed in detail. In the first chapter the theoretical basis of this work will be introduced. The second part of this thesis is dedicated to the photoemission spectroscopies, i.e. spin-resolved Auger electron spectroscopy, Fano effects in valence band photoem ission and core level photoemission. In a third part we discuss resonant magneto-optical effects in the X-ray regime. Last chapter is dealing with non-collinear spin-structures within multiple scattering theory and its application to studies of photoemission and X-ray absorption is described.
