The book sheds light on the pressing issues and focuses on the areas of research that Sabah is experiencing today, as marine scientists from the Borneo Marine Research Institute continue to advance in understanding the marine environment of Sabah in line with the priorities of the state and the country. Explore a wide range of topics from single-cell algae to large marine vertebrates, from hydrodynamics and water quality to effects of marine plastic pollution, from the biological to the physical and chemical aspects of the marine environment in Sabah. After going through each chapter, it gives the saying “Sabah is blessed with natural wonders” a deeper reflection of what the ocean means to the environment and people of the state.

The parks - most are hotspots of biodiversity - have become a major attraction for foreign and increasingly domestic tourists. Nature tourism is at the same time a source of revenues and a threat to the environmental integrity of conservation areas. This study - based on the theory of structuration and using a triangulation of methods - analyses (eco)tourism in Malaysian national parks from different angles by asking different groups of tourists and experts about their opinions, experiences and needs. In order to learn more about the often neglected group of domestic tourists a large survey was conducted in Kuala Lumpur. The needs of foreign individual and group travellers were analysed with a questionnaire in Gunung Mulu National Park. And experts of conservation and tourism (i.e. scientists, park managers, tour operators, exponents of NGOs) were asked to assess the state and potential of ecotourism in Malaysian national parks. Results show that the increasing heterogeneity and number of visitors and their different needs can put a strain on the environmental integrity of conservation areas. This study makes recommendations to mitigate such strains and to further sustainable tourism.

Book excerpt: This book brings together a collection of chapters that investigate sustainable tourism development in different Asian contexts; from stakeholders’ perspectives, existing issues in the market, as well as the impacts of COVID-19 on tourism. It highlights the importance of tourism sustainability in Asia. Specifically, this book examines these themes by examples related to Asian tourism such as; social-cultural impact of sustainable growth, environmental constraints and policies, community engagement, moral limits of the market, stakeholders’ participation in tourism development, the hindered interaction between foreign tourists and local community, impact of the pandemic and proposed ways forward. This edited volume substantiates this by using evidence of quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods approaches aligned with empirical data to show sustainable efforts and impacts. This book is of interest to researchers and practitioners as it offers timely understandings of sustainable tourism from multiple perspectives within the Asian context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coral reefs are an important tourism resource for many coastal and island destinations and generate a range of benefits to their local communities, including as a food source, income from tourism, employment and recreational opportunities. However, coral reefs are under increasing threat from climate change and related impacts such as coral bleaching and ocean acidification. Other anthropogenic stresses include over-fishing, anchor damage, coastal development, agricultural run-off, sedimentation and coral mining. This book adopts a multidisciplinary approach to review these issues as they relate to the sustainable management of coral reef tourism destinations. It incorporates coral reef science, management, conservation and tourism perspectives and takes a global perspective of coral reef tourism issues covering many of the world’s most significant coral reef destinations. These include the Great Barrier Reef and Ningaloo Reef in Australia, the Red Sea, Pacific Islands, South East Asia, the Maldives, the Caribbean islands, Florida Keys and Brazil. Specific issues addressed include climate change, pollution threats, fishing, island tourism, scuba diving, marine wildlife, governance, sustainability, conservation and community resilience. The book also issues a call for more thoughtful development of coral reef experiences where the ecological needs of coral reefs are placed ahead of the economic desires of the tourism industry.
