Book excerpt: Development of a model that can be used to predict oxidation rates of copper to cuprous and cupric oxide (Cu2O and CuO, respectively) in the air reactor of a Chemical Looping Combustion (CLC) system is the primary focus of this thesis. The proposed oxidation model, which is based in Wagner Theory and defect chemistry, describes the fundamental processes occurring during copper oxidation. Consequently, it provides better predictive capabilities over a wide range of temperatures and pressures, as well as characteristic particle geometries (spheres, cylinders and plates) than the phenomenological models that are currently being used to predict oxidation rates of copper-based oxygen carriers used in CLC systems. In addition to developing this oxidation model, cuprous and cupric oxide reduction experiments with gaseous fuels like carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methane, and solid fuels like char, wyodak coal, and corn stover, were performed to characterize reaction rates in the fuel reactor of CLC systems. Oxidation rates obtained from the oxidation model, and measured rates from the reduction experiments were used to estimate the size and oxygen carrier loading for a 10 MWth CLC system.

This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaporated copper films were exposed to an atomic oxygen flux of 1.4 x 10(exp 17) atoms/sq cm per sec at temperatures in the range 285 to 375 F (140 to 191 C) for time intervals between 2 and 50 minutes. Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS) was used to determine the thickness of the oxide layers formed and the ratio of the number of copper to oxygen atoms in the layers. Oxide film thicknesses ranged from 50 to 3000 A (0.005 to 0.3 microns, or equivalently, 5 x 10(exp -9) to 3 x 10(exp -7); it was determined that the primary oxide phase was Cu2O. The growth law was found to be parabolic (L(t) varies as t(exp 1/2)), in which the oxide thickness L(t) increases as the square root of the exposure time t. The analysis of the data is consistent with either of the two parabolic growth laws. (The thin-film parabolic growth law is based on the assumption that the process is diffusion controlled, with the space charge within the growing oxide layer being negligible. The thick-film parabolic growth law is also based on a diffusion controlled process, but space-charge neutrality prevails locally within very thick oxides.) In the absence of a voltage measurement across the growing oxide, a distinction between the two mechanisms cannot be made, nor can growth by the diffusion of neutral atomic oxygen be entirely ruled out. The activation energy for the reaction is on the order of 1.1 eV (1.76 x 10(exp -19) joule, or equivalently, 25.3 kcal/mole). Fromhold, A. T. and Williams, J. R. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biological activation of dioxygen is a key reaction in biological systems. Enzymes involved in direct oxygen activation are oxidases and oxygenases. Multi-copper oxidases are an important class of oxidases reducing dioxygen in a four-electron reduction to water with concomitant one-electron oxidation of the reducing substrate. The progress in the characterization and understanding of the structure and function of these enzymes has advanced so tremendously over the last ten years that the publication of a book documenting these achievements has been overdue.Especially the recent discovery of a key role of the FET3 protein of Saccharomyces cerevisae, a multi-copper oxidase, in iron metabolism of this eukaryote has underpinned the function of the plasma multi-copper oxidase ceruloplasmin in vetebrate iron transport. The lately determined x-ray structure of human ceruloplasmin confirms its close structural relatedness to the plant multi-copper oxidases ascorbate oxidase and laccase and due to strong amino-acid sequence similarities has allowed to construct a useful model of the more distantly related blood-clotting factor VIII.This book contains review articles from experts in the field, dealing with modern spectroscopy, enzyme kinetics, bioinorganic chemistry, x-ray crystallography, electron transfer reactions, molecular biology, medical aspects and potential industrial applications of the three main members of multi-copper oxidases, i.e., laccase, ascorbate oxidase and ceruloplasmin.

Book excerpt: The recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in copper based oxides is an event of major importance not only with respect to the physical phenomenon itself but also because it definitely shows that solid state chemistry, and especially the crystal chemistry of oxides, has a crucial place in the synthesis and understanding of new materials for future appli cations. The numerous papers published in the field of high Tc supercon ductors in the last five years demonstrate that the great complexity of these materials necessitates a close collaboration between physicists and solid state chemists. This book is based to a large extent on our experience of the crystal chemistry of copper oxides, which we have been studying in the laboratory for more than twelve years, but it also summarizes the main results which have been obtained for these compounds in the last five years relating to their spectacular superconducting properties. We have focused on the struc ture, chemical bonding and nonstoichiometry of these materials, bearing in mind that redox reactions are the key to the optimization of their supercon ducting properties, owing to the importance of the mixed valence of copper and its Jahn-Teller effect. We have also drawn on studies of extended defects by high-resolution electron microscopy and on their creation by ir radiation effects.

Book excerpt: Bioinorganic chemistry is an interdisciplinary research field which centers on metals in biology. Over the past few decades, advances in chemistry, biology as well as in spectroscopic methods have shed light on the role of copper in human pathologies and allowed the growing discovery of copper-containing biological systems. Following this trend, much effort is being constantly chanelled towards understanding these fundamental biological processes or enzymes. In addition, chemists are developing molecules to target copper or copper enzymes as therapeutic tools. On the other hand, inspired by the function of biological systems, small molecular weight complexes inspired by the active site of copper enzymes are being prepared and studied. These bioinspired complexes can function both as mechanistic tools and as functional catalysts for oxidative transformations. The seven chapters in this book, contributed by internationally recognized authors cover recent developments on these aspects illustrated by interdisciplinary fields from biology, chemistry, spectroscopy to bioinspired catalysis. It contains aspects ranging from human health issues (copper homeostasis in bacteria and the development of molecules as anticancer or antibacterial agents) to bioinspired catalysis.

Book excerpt: This monograph consists of manuscripts, summary statements, and poster abstracts submitted by invited speakers and poster contributors who participated in the symposium "Oxygen Complexes and Oxygen Activation by Transition Metals," held March 23-26, 1987, at Texas A&M University. This meeting was the fifth annual international symposium sponsored by the Texas A&M Industry-University Cooperative Chemistry Program (IUCCP). The co chairmen of the conference were Professors Arthur E. Martell and Donald T. Sawyer of the Texas A&M University Chemistry Department. The program was developed by an academic-industrial steering committee consisting of the co-chairmen and members appointed by the sponsoring chemical companies Dr. James F. Bradzil, The Standard Oil Company, Ohio; Dr. Jerry R. Ebner, Monsanto Company; Dr. Craig Murchison, Dow Chemical Company; Dr. Donald C. Olsen, Shell Development Company; Dr. Tim R. Ryan, Celanese Chemical Company; and Dr. Ron Sanderson, Texaco Chemical Company. The subject of this conference reflects the intense interest that has developed in academic institutions and industry on several aspects of dioxygen chemistry. These include the formation of dioxygen complexes and their applications in facilitated transport and oxygen separation; homo geneous and heterogeneous catalysis of oxidation; and oxygenation of organic substrates by molecular oxygen. The conference differs in two respects from several other symposia on dioxygen chemistry held during the past few years. First, there is extensive industrial participation, especially with respect to oxygen activation.
