Book excerpt: Herein, a well-defined, neutral, phosphine-sulfonate ligated, palladium catalyst for the production of polyethene, poly(ethene-co-carbon monoxide, and polyethene-block-poly-(ethene-alt-carbon monox- ide) co-oligomers is reported. The system is living under mild conditions and produces poly(ethene-co- carbon monoxide) with carbon monoxide content ranging from 0-50 mol %. Mechanistic studies suggest that an unusually small difference in the ethene and carbon monoxide binding affinities as well as en- hanced decarbonylation play important roles in determining the copolymer composition. Furthermore, this system was found to be exceptionally tolerant of polar functional-groups, protic solvents, and aque- ous emulsion. This allows for the production of copolymers of ethene with polar monomers, including functionalized norbornenes and styrenes. Finally, the effects of anions and N-substituted imines on the palladium-catalyzed copolymerization of imines with carbon monoxide was investigated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new edition of a classic text and reference The large chains of molecules known as polymers are currently used in everything from "wash and wear" clothing to rubber tires to protective enamels and paints. Yet the practical applications of polymers are only increasing; innovations in polymer chemistry constantly bring both improved and entirely new uses for polymers onto the technological playing field. Principles of Polymerization, Fourth Edition presents the classic text on polymer synthesis, fully updated to reflect today's state of the art. New and expanded coverage in the Fourth Edition includes: * Metallocene and post-metallocene polymerization catalysts * Living polymerizations (radical, cationic, anionic) * Dendrimer, hyperbranched, brush, and other polymer architectures and assemblies * Graft and block copolymers * High-temperature polymers * Inorganic and organometallic polymers * Conducting polymers * Ring-opening polymer ization * In vivo and in vitro polymerization Appropriate for both novice and advanced students as well as professionals, this comprehensive yet accessible resource enables the reader to achieve an advanced, up-to-date understanding of polymer synthesis. Different methods of polymerization, reaction parameters for synthesis, molecular weight, branching and crosslinking, and the chemical and physical structure of polymers all receive ample coverage. A thorough discussion at the elementary level prefaces each topic, with a more advanced treatment following. Yet the language throughout remains straightforward and geared towards the student. Extensively updated, Principles of Polymerization, Fourth Edition provides an excellent textbook for today's students of polymer chemistry, chemical engineering, and materials science, as well as a current reference for the researcher or other practitioner working in these areas.

Divided into eight chapters written by international experts, this book covers polymerization using various organotransition-metal catalysts, including early and late transition metal complexes, new trends in olefin oligomerization and related reactions. All authors address the historic and scientific backgrounds of the field as well as current research progress and potential for further research. The complete book is designed to present eight independent lectures and, because all authors are well versed in organometallic chemistry, each is based on a profound understanding of the reactions and structures of organotransition metal complexes. This book is an ideal accompaniment for researchers taking courses in olefin polymerization and also serves as a valuable resource for teachers and lecturers of chemistry when planning and researching material for advanced lecture courses.

Book excerpt: How can a scientist or engineer synthesize and utilize polymers to solve our daily problems? This introductory text, aimed at the advanced undergraduate or graduate student, provides future scientists and engineers with the fundamental knowledge of polymer design and synthesis to achieve specific properties required in everyday applications. In the first five chapters, this book discusses the properties and characterization of polymers, since designing a polymer initially requires us to understand the effects of chemical structure on physical and chemical characteristics. Six further chapters discuss the principles of polymerization reactions including step, radical chain, ionic chain, chain copolymerization, coordination and ring opening. Finally, material is also included on how commonly known polymers are synthesized in a laboratory and a factory. This book is suitable for a one semester course in polymer chemistry and does not demand prior knowledge of polymer science.

This book was released on 1987 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formulation of the problem of the relative role of specific factors, which are basically capable of causing the corresponding effects, is justified in connection with the essential relationship of the micro structure of polymers, which are formed due to the action of anionic initiators, to the nature of the reaction medium. One of them is the change of overall polarity of the medium during the transition from one solvent to another, and the second is a formation of complexes of active reaction centers of growth with components of the medium, which have electron donor properties. In this report we shall limit our examination to the particular but very interesting case, specifically the system of the metal alcyl-polar monomer-non-polar solvent with the inclusion of data obtained in studying the microtactics of polymethylmethacrylic (PMMA), which is formed due to the action of lithium butyl with various ratios of monomer to solvent. The synthesized polymers were studied by infrared and NMR spectroscopy methods.
