A wealth of peer-reviewed literature has investigated interventions for child victims and adult survivors of CSA; however, there has been a lack of focus on the therapeutic needs of nonoffending parents and caregivers (NOPC) of child victims. In the wake of their children's sexual abuse, NOPC are at risk of a host of mental health disorders, and researchers estimate their symptomology continues for two years following the disclosure or discovery. Sexual Abuse: Intervention, Coping Strategies and Psychological Impact begins with a framework for group counseling for NOPC, and discusses alternative and parallel interventions for NOPC while providing recommendations for future research. Chapter Two continues on to provides an overview of CSA and intervention in India. Chapter Three focuses on two historically persecuted groups, Orthodox Jews and Muslims, and the religious values that may enhance culturally competent interviewing skills in child sexual abuse interviews. Chapter Four presents potential cognitive mediators associated with the psychological impact of childhood sexual abuse by reviewing past and current literature on the effects of this type of abuse. Chapter Five addresses the gap in current knowledge and understanding of male sexual abuse.

Book excerpt: This study examined factors associated with the development of posttraumatic growth following sexual assault in 11 female survivors, six months to five years after the assault. To broaden our understanding of how survivors cope with the effects and impacts of their assault and how this ultimately leads to the development of posttraumatic growth, this study used grounded theory methodology to develop a causal model of how growth can occur following sexual assault. A mixed-methods qualitative study (utilizing some quantitative features) was used. The data analysis team concluded that participants described a process consisting of four super-clusters that subsumes nine major domains. The four super-clusters were: Preexisting Traits, Responses or Impact from Assault, Coping Strategies, and Growth and Outcomes. Within those super-clusters the nine major domains were: (a) Traits Prior to Sexual Assault, (b) Negative Affective Responses, (c) Symptom Reactions, (d) Negative Relationship Impact, (e) Negative Coping Strategies, (f) Adaptive Coping Strategies, (g) Seeking Support, (h) Positive Personal Growth, and (i) Increasing Knowledge and Speaking Out. Based on our model of posttraumatic growth development and quantitative analyses, sexual assault survivors appear to rely more on avoidance coping or maladaptive coping strategies immediately following their assault and then tend to turn to more approach coping or adaptive coping strategies. Most participants also described seeking social support as an important domain for making positive changes or developing growth in their lives, except those who described preexisting traits that tended to prevent them from opening up to others (i.e., introversion) or those who were treated negatively by others after their assault (e.g., others responded with disbelief or judgment). All participants reported some growth and/or positive changes as a result of coping with their assault. Implications for research on posttraumatic growth and sexual assault and treatment considerations based on these findings are discussed.

In others it is, but the available conclusions the information supports block its acceptance, because they conflict with the posi tions of dominant groups in the politics of sexuality. Possibly the most obvious example is the determination of many theorists to ignore the evidence that while men rarely report being sexually assaulted, when questioned in community surveys, they make up a third of the victims, and a quarter of the perpetrators of sexual assault are women. These findings are incompatible with the feminist theory that sexual assault is not a sexual act, but normal male behavior motivated politically, to maintain men's dominance of women. Most research supporting the theory investigated women only as victims and men only as aggressors. Some feminists have dismissed the need for any research to support their beliefs on the ground that such research is "busy work" establishing what women already know. One belief considered not to require re search is that heterosexual pornography made for a male audience increases the prevalence of rape by encouraging rape-supportive attitudes of male aggression and female submission. No criticism has been directed at the soft-core pornography of "Mills and Boon" stories written for women that promote similar attitudes.
